Gay times on the Railroad.
Ont on the Dnbuque and Sioux City
Railroad travelers and employees have
the gayest possible times. The train is
onlv about two hours making the first
nine mile's.
The other day, just this side Peoria, a
bo v run alongside the cars for nearly
half a mile, veiling " Mr. Cawiev!" Mr.
Cawley!"' at the top of his voice,

'Why," said the boy, "father's
bull has iumped on the hind car."

platform of the hind car stood a big
bovine leisurely chewing his cud, and
contentedly enjoying a view of the coun
try from his elevated position. The con
ductor bad the brakes whistled down,
and the noble critter was helped off. He
bad been seen standing on the side of
the track for several days, and bad proba
bly deliberately come to the conclusion
that he could wait till the train passed,
and then catebnp to it, jump on the hind
car, and take a free ride. He tried it
and won. Since then the conductor has
placed the cow-catcher on the rear end
of his train, and has bad no more trouble
with animals on his hind car.
Out at Manchester, Independence,
Waterloo and Cedar Fall, they send mes
senger boys on horseback to meet the
train and get the Times so anxious are
they for news. The newsboy on the
train throws them the papers, and they
gallop back, thus enabling the people of
those enterprising towns to read the
latest intelligence from the seat of war,
from two to three hours sooner than thty
otherwise would.
Tbe Dubuque and Sioux City is a
great road for time. You can ride longer
on it than any other road in tbe country
for tbe same amount of fare. Dubuque

A "Swamp Akgkl" Incident. A Mor

to enter swamps, you fan imagine his
surpriite when one of his lieutenants,
whom he had ordered to take twenty
men and enter this swamp, said that he
'"could not do it tbe mud was too deep."
Colonel Sferreil ordered him to try. He
did so, and the lieutenant returned with
his men covered with mud, and said:
''Colonel, the mud is over my men's
heads; 1 can't do ir."
The colonel insisted, and told the lieu
tenant to make a requisition for anything
that was neeessarv for the safe passage
of the swamp. The lieutenant made his
requisition in writing, and on the spot
It was as follows:
"I want twenty men eighteen feet long,
to cross a swamp filteen feet deep."
The joke was a good one. It secured,
however, ngt a cubit to the stature of the
lieutenant, but rather his arrest for dis
respect to his superior. The battery,
however, was built with the aid of wheel
barrows and sand. Like Jonah's gourd,
it sprung up in a night, and Reuuregard
withered undercd under it in his modern
Nineveh, which will be destroyed.
