WEDNESDAY ...".r.".SKPTEMBEBpn TlffiFTONYCORNEE NOVEMBER. Defying Autumn's chilly breath, ami Winter's chiling moon, November watt upon its breeze the snnny smiles of Juno : The ir retains its balmy uannth, the leaves their tinted green, And iu the light that l athes the night the lore of teoa is seen. The brooklets draw the moonbeams down inhale them with each breath ; Then sing in joyous liappiuoss, nor think of com ing death : But even now the Arctic King is riding close be hind then., And wielding with the Northern blast his mena cles to bind them. You've watched, perhaps, the sudden glow upon a dying face, As if the parting soul foresaw its future dwelling place; And then you're sven the cold clay stretched out upon the bier. To sleep the long aud dreaded sleep that knows no waking here. Well, even so the season dies ; ere yet it takes its flight, The waning sun and harvest-moon pour forth their flood of light ; And then the clouds grow dark and sad, and weep tear drops of rain ; For days and months have gone to sleep, and ne'er shall wake again. Not an Vncommon Case. A traveler from Virginia, as his blood ed horse, plethoric saddle-bags, and hau tv countenance indicated, stopped at a comfortable wayside inn in Kentucky, one night many years ago. The land lord was a joval, whole-souled fellow, as landlords were in those days, and gave the traveler the best entertainment his table and bar afforded, as well as his own merrv company to make him glad. Early in the morning the stranger was a and looting-around, when he espied i a rich bed of mint in the garden. He j straightway sought Boniface, and indig- j nant at what he supposed hi3 inhospitali- j ty in setting plain whisky before hrxi ! when the means of brewing nectar were 1 so easy of access, he dragged him iorth to the" spot, and pointing his finger at the mint, he exclaned: " I say. landlord, will you be good enough to say what that is?" "A bed of mint," said the somewhat astonished landlord. "And will you please tell me what i the use of it ? ' Well, 1 don t exactly know, 'cept the old woman dries it sometimes with the other yarbs." The Virginian almost turned pale at the enormity of this assertion. (''And do yon mean to tell me that you don't know what a mint julip is? " "No, 'cept that it's something like sage tea, stranger. "Sage tea! Go right aloiifj to the house, get a bucket of ice, loaf sugar, and vour bestjliquor. The landlord obeyed, and the stranger soon made his appearance with a hand ful of fragTant, dewy, mint, and then they brewed and drank, and bredwed and drank again, breakfast was over and the stranger's horse was brought out, only to be ordered back. Through the livelong day they brewed and drank; one or two neighbors drop ped in, who were partakers, and until late in the night were their origiea kept np ; ere they made it bed-time, the land lord and his Virginia guest who had in itiated him in the pleasant mysteries of mint julep, were sworn brothers, and when the latter departed the next morn ing, Boniface exacted a pledge that he would stop on his return and stay as lon as he pleased free ot cost, it was he next summer before he came back. Riding np late in the evening, he gave his horse to an old negro who sat at the gate, and at the same time in quired : '"Well Sam, how is your master?" ' Yonder him come," said the negro, pointing to a youth who was approach ing. "I mean your old master, fool. " "Oldmassa! him done dead dis tree month ! " ' Dead ! What was the matter with him ? He was in excellent health when I left." ' Yes. but you see Massa Stranger one j r J:3i "irginny gemmens come 'long! ast year, and showed him how to ; eat greens in his licher; he liked it so i we;l lat he done stuck to it till it killed ' him. said the darkey shaking his head. f he stranges passed less jovial night than on his pwnrfoas visit, and was 'dayligb eke next morning. He quit-t dhfs conscience, however, in the with the reflection, that " good thin?; are sometimes misused. " Very Dutch. Two old Dutch neighbors in Pennsvl rerp proverbially steady and hou acd they carried on their transac tions with their neighbors and each other for rs on the plan of ready pay in cash or barter: Bat at last the hard times came, -nd tbey were obliged to re sort o keeping accounts. One clay they met settlement, and, after very hard labor .nd urging, it was apparent that Hi owed Yawkub twenty dollars. " Well, Yawkub, how musht we settle him? I'se got no monish." " Yaw, yaw, never mind dat, we can settle him mit a a nottsh," said Yawkub, who prided him self on doing business at the store. " Oh, yaw, mit a notish; well den yon writes de notish." " Dat is nit right," said Yawkub, "you owes me de monish, you writes de notish, I sign him, dat isb de way. So Hans set about it, and pro duced the following: " Westmoreland kounty I owish Yaw kub twonty dollars tor Pttle np whon T hash no monish to pay him. Signed, Yawkub." Then arose an unforeseen difficulty, who ought to keep the note. It was finally decided that Hans ought to keep it, for bow ei3e would he know how much to pay awkub? In due time, when Hans, the debtor, got the money, he paid up, and this raised another puzzling question, and ended in the conclusion that Yawkub must take the note in his eissession, so that he would know that ans had paid the money.
