An Amusing Scene.
Dropping yesterday into the counting
room of a hardware merchant, we were
slightly amused at an incident showing
the uneasiness of the letter " Haitch,"
when misapplied by that class of the com
munity born within the hearing of Bow
bells. " I want a bill, sir," said a cockney to
the proprietor.
"Whose bill?"
"Mrs. Habit's, sir."
Proprietor to entry clerk " James,
make out Mrs. Habit's bill."
" Yes sir."
Entry clerk looks over the ledger with
great diligence, but can't find Mr3.
Habit's name in the list of debtors. He
puzzles for some minutes without avail.
Cockney grows weary.
"I wish you'd please 'urry, young
man."
Proprietor steps up, a little irritated,
and comes to entry clerk's assistance.
" There's no such name as Habit here,
sir," he says; "there mnst be some mis
take." Proprietor looks frowningly over the
ledger and makes up his mind that the
entrv clerk is correct
" Do you know what Mrs. Habit pur
chased?" he asked of Mr. Cockney.
" Yes, partly, for I hordered some of
the things. There was a 'ickory 'andled
'ammer, and a clothes 'orse, sent home
last Tuesday."
Again the books were searched with
out avail. The proprietor was about
giving up in despair of finding the ac
count of Mrs. Habit, when Mr. Cockney
drew up and looked over his shoulders
at the ledger. The mystery was then
solved :
"Why, sir, no wonder you can't find
it," said the cockney, "blessed if you
hain't looking under the wrong letter.
The name hain't among the Haitches it
it is among the Hays."
The leaves were further turned, and
among the " Hays," was found the proper
account, properly charged to Mrs. Ab
bott The bill was duly made out, and
the cockney paid it He then went on
his way grumbling over the stupidity of
people who can't disseminate between
the Haitches and the Hays.
A Paragraph for Little Giri.s. The
Wheeling Intelligencer says: " Everv lit
tle miss who will look up the word

article that, to the soldiers in the field,
is extremely acceptable. One of the '
public schools in Pittsburg sent a box of i
them to the Christian Commission, and
the youthful donor3 have been blessed
lor the gift by as many soldiers as there
were ' housewives' to give them. The ar
ticle is simply a receptacle for buttons,
thread, pins, needles, tape, &c. Odds
arid ends of the work-bag furnish the j
material, though oiled muslin or other i
water.proof stuff is better. The moment '
the box reached the field ' do give me t
one, sir,' was the word until the last one
was gone. The government would econ- !
omize by issuing them to the soldiers, i
that they might mend" their own clothesj
but the school-girls must do it instead.

The river still fulls, and the weather
is turning colder, and the prospect of a
rise grows more and more dreary.
At Cincinnati the river has fallen two
inches since Saturday, and is still de
clining. At Pittsburg it had risen six
inches, and was stationary.
Green, Cumberland and Tennessee
rivers are falling, and navigation, except
in the last named, is almost entirelv sus
pended. The Cordelia Ann returned to Bow
ling Green yesterday.
The Huntsman and Des Moines City
left yesterday afternoou for Cairo, both
having all the freight they could carry.
The Delaware left for Louisville at
noon, refusing all freight Captain Bal
lard was determined to go through with
out detention.
The Colossus arrived yesterday even
ing,, and returned to Louisville last
night
Tne Curlew drew up to the wharf last
night, and is now loading for Memphis
and all way points. She will probably
not leave until Thursday.
