How like the dog that bore away
Of a nice young lamb a quarter ;
And safely swam along with joy

And like a greedy sinner,
Opened his jaws to catch a shade,
And lost his stolen dinner.
We should be sorry for the dog
Thus foiled by an allusion,
But that he stole the mutton leg
That led to his confusion.

Laughter a Universal Language.
Eev. Henry Ward Reecher, away off
in Europe, meets a Dutch girL He talks
to her ia English, and she talks to him
in here is what he says about it:
A snn-brown maiden of robust stature
came toward us leaving a little brother
and sister shilyw waiting behind and
poured forth a stream of words which
means as much to onr understanding as
the sparks which fly from the anvil.
Courtesy required that we should reply,
which we did in fluent English, which
checked her loquacity for a moment.
But it burst lorth again, and I repaid
every word with another. Now it struck
me that there was something ludicrou si
in two persons standing on either side of
a stone wall jabbering at each other
in regular sequence, in the most earnest
and emphatic manner, and I burst into
broad laughter. Laughter is a universal
language. She laughed too. Bat when
two persons have laughed there seems an
awkwardness in not knowing what to say
or do next Her laugh was so entirely
in English that I quite forgot she could
not understand me when, in a polite and
expressive manner, I said: "Well, now,
my dear ehild, will you explain what all
this means? " She insisted by gestures
that I should leave the path, and come
over to her side, which I did. Then she
took np a line of march, and I followed
to see what should come of it Across
the field, up the hillside, down the hill
side, we weut swiftly; at the bottom she
stopped and pointed to a path. Ah! All
this meant that I should take a shorter
cut than by a horse-path! Was it coin
or kindness that had inspired all this
care of me? I put a coin in her stout
hand, received a good natured laugh,
and betook myself to the path, and soon
came to Grindslwall its great glacier
and its magnificent Wetterhorn.

By the Mohammedan law of inheritance
the eldest brother was entitled to one
half, the seeond one-third, and the young
est one-ninth of the whole number. As
the animals could not be divided without
destroying them, the subject was referred
to the decision of the commander of the
faithful, AIL The caliph added an ox to
the number, and then made the division.
This gave each brother more than his
share the oldest nine, the next six, and
the youngest two and yet left the Prince
the ox he added.

The river here is falling slightly, but
at Cincinnati- it has risen five inches, and
is swelling at Pittsburg, but there is lit
tle prospect of any considerable rise.
All the rivers of the South and West
are also falling, and navigation was nev
er more difficult than now, and grave
fears are entertained that there will be
no considerable rise before mid winter.
The Huntress pnssed up on Thursday
night from Memphis. She took the Star
in tow to New Albany
The Nevada passed down yesterday
with two heavy barges loaded Jwith Gov
ernment stores for Southland.
The S. B. Yonng came down from
Louisville yesterday, with sick soldiers.
She ran in below the wharf, after unload
ing as if with the purpose of laying up
here.
The Delaware ov ;r due from Louis
ville and the Huntsman over due from
Cair0 had not arrived Up to a late hour
yesterday evening. They may be in be
fore this morning.
From the uncertainty of navigation it
is impossible for us to announce with
any certainty the arrivals and departures
of vessels. Passengers and shippers
must be, like a faithful servant, al trays
ready, for at what hour a boat will ar"
rive, in the present state of the river no
man knoweth; whether at midnight)
