The London cor respondent of the Belfast (Ireland) Nem Letter says: A tradesman in Pic cadilly has made an astounding discove ry. As a benefactor to mankind the re sult of his researches entitles him to take rank with Coperncus, Galileo, Hun ter, Newton, r niton, Watt, Stephenson Davy, or any (or all) the philosophers who have surrounded their names with a 1 nimbus of glory. This distinguished person has met the want of the age. He has discovered a crinoline which won't get into eccentric or unbecoming angles when ladies get into omnibusses or press through crowds. The article in question is called the " Ondina, or waved jupon," and the inventor thus de scribes its wonderful properties: " It does not sway with the unsightly results of the ordinary hoops ; and so perfect are the warlike bands, that a lady may ascend a steep stair, lean against a ta ble, throw herself into an arm chair, pass to her stall at the opera, occupy a fourth seat in a carriage, without inconvenience to herself or others, or provoking the rude remarks of the observers, besides removing or modifying in an important degree all those peculiarities tending to destroy the modesty of English women ; and lastly, it allows the dress to fall in graceful folds." To be able'' to modify in a peculiar degre9 all those pe culiar tendencies to destroy the modesty of English woman " is itself a magnifi cent achievemnt. for which the inventor deserves a statue in Trafalgar Square and a monument in the Soho Bazaar! H Hnntsman, Cairo. ' Pioueer, Memi his. There is news at last ol a rise coming that will improve navigation. The rise ii small however. At Cincinnati the river had risen over a foot up to Saturday noon, and it was rising at Lonisville. witli three feet water on rortland oar. The Pioneer, a very pretty low water boat, passed down yesterday on her ma den trip. The Colossus arrived hre on Friday night, and returned to Louisville. The Deleware broke some of her ma chinery and was, consequently, detained at Louisville. She may be expected to leave for Louisville at noon to-day. The Huntsman lef Saturday afternoon for Cairo, with a big trip. The Colonna will be the regular mail and passenger packet for Cairo to-day at noon. She is very light, and under the careful guidance of Capt Tom. Bolus, will go through without detention. The Cordelia Ann will leave for Bow ling Green this evenin r. We were pleased to greet our "gay and I festive" friend Jim Cox, of the mam moth wharf-boat, on Saturday, just re turned f 5m a visit to the paternal man sion and the scenes of his boy-hood davs, where standing on his native hills, he breathed the pure air of heaven and shot the grey squirrel from the sturdy oak. fcHe returne looking like a giant refreshed, and will again be found at his post ready to receive and forward for all his old friends, with a promptness and ooliteness no wise abated. The Cincinnati Commercial of Friday says: Information has been received at Madi son, that there is a plot on foot to burn the new boats building at that point. We are informed that the incendiary ring leaders are " spotted." We find the fol lowing in the Louisville Democrat of Wednesday: Owing to the large number of steam boat disasters on the Western waters of late, and the discovery of a plot to burn all the shipping on the Western waters, all the insurance offices in this city have given notice that they will insure no more on any steamers navigating the Western waters. They also refuse to in sure any goods that are shipped on such steamers. This will have the effect, to a great extent, to prevent shipments; and, owing to the extra risk that the shipperand consignee will have to run, all goods will, no doubt, greatly advance. The Cairo Democrat of the 8th says: The War Eagle brought up the fam ily of Gen. Sherman, also the body of his son. Her Captain was arrested by the Provost guards for not heeding the guns fired at him on his down trip, but we hear that he soon satisfied the author ities that he did not know whether they were fired at him, and was released. Boats from below report 4 feet 2 inch es at Point Pleasant To St. Louis we have 4 feet scant. Here the river is falling slowly. The New Albany Ledger of Friday says : Capt. Bunce's pretty steamer Big Grey Eagle is watching the weather, and as soon as there comes a swell in the river she will cut a swell of her own, having put on a neat white dress, that she will scarcely be known, even by her warmest friends and most ardent admirers.
