i TCESDAT , OCTOBER 13, 1S63 Uow We Got Here ! After making herself very agreeable, Lady Constance took up a book which was at hand and said, " Do you know this?" And Tancred opened a volume which he had never seen, and then turn ing to its title-page, fouud it was The Revolutions of Chaos a startling work just published, and of which a rumor had reached him. "No," he replied; "I have not seen it" "I will lend it to you if you like; it is one of those books one must real. It explains everything, and is written in a very agreeable style." " To judge from the title, the subject is rather obscure,'' said Tancred. " No longer so," said Lady Constane. "It is treated scientiGcally; everything is explained by geology and astronomy, and in that way. It shows you exactly how a star is formed: nothing can be so pretty ! A cluster of valor the cream of the milky way a sort of celestial cheese churned into read it, 'tis charming." ''Nobody ever saw light you must a star formed." said iancred. " Perhaps not You must read the Revelations; it is all explained. But what is mast interesting is the way in which man has been ' developed.' The principal i3 perpetually going on. First, there was nothing, then there was some thing; then I forget the next I think there were shells, then fishes; then we came let me see did we come next? Never mind that: we came at last And the next change there will be something very superior to ns, something with wings. Ah ! that's it: we were fishes, and I believe we shall be crows. But yon must read it " I do not believe I ever saw a fish," said Taucred. 1 Qfr but it is all proved ; you must rot argue on my rapid sketch; read the book. It is impossible to contradict anything in it You understand it is all science; it is not like those books in which one says one thing and another the contrary, and both may oe wrong. Everything is proved by geology, you know. ou see exactly how everything is made; how many worlds there have been; how long they lasted; what went before: what comes next We are a link in the thtin, as inferior animals were that preceded us; we, in turn, shall be inferior; all that will remaiuofiis will be some relics in new red sandstone. This is development. Disraelis Tan cred. The Happiness or Poor Folks. After a day of labor and fatigue, the surety of work for the ensuing week is happiness to poor folks. For them there are no costly pleasures, no play-going, no drinking in taverns, no pleasure ex cursions. Bat for the heart, .the soul there are truer, sweeter, and entirely in expensive enjoyments. To embrace yonr wife ; to support the steps of your feeble father or mother ; to dance your infant on your knee; these are the pleasures of poor people. The capitalist is disturbed by the va riations on exchanges, the crop owners fear the tempest; the man of business makes hazardous speculations ; the mer chant who has not effected a sale is frightened at the approach of pay-day, and trembles at his debts: thp nWk: dreads a recmcnon m tns sattary ; the house-owners fer burning'; the rich man thieves. To be ignorant of all these troubles is the happiness of poor peo ple. The good-liver is often sick from the effects of intemperance ; the English man, pinned to his chair, swears at the gout which he has gained by dint of toast; the young coxcomb has a head ache for having drunk a glass of cham paign ; that great singer is under regime, the result of a great dinner. Labor and sobriety preserve health and gaity along j with it. That is the happiness of poor j people. It at times ambitions desires glide into I their souls, they depart in haste, as indo- leace enters not along with them. Cus tom makes labor a pleasure. Content ment with little makes them despise the good which they have not They blush for having a moment envied the rich man his riches, and return to their fami lies lifting up a song. It says, speaking of him: This wonderful dog which has an eventful history in connection with the war, is about to return to his regiment, the "old 13th" Jack was a great fa vorite with the Niagara boys, and was taken with the regiment, sharing in all the perils 'he glories of the field. He was through all the Peninsular campaign and was wounded during the seven days' battles. He recovered, however, and re mained in the service. At the second battle of Fredericks burg, during the storming of St. Mary's Heights, Jack was taken prisoner, and shared the fatiguing march to Richmond. He was paroled with the rest of the boys, and finally got back to his old home in the smoky city. Now he is about to return to his regiment, and vesterday he was presented, by a number of his ad mirers, with a beautiful collar of solid silver, upon which is engraved the names of the battles through which he passed. The collar cost between sixty and seven ty dollars, and is a very creditable piece of workmanship. Jack will be gladly welcomed by every man in the regiment, but if he should be so unfortunate as to again fall into the hands of the enemy, he will run great risk of being robbed of ms coiiar, n ne does not lose his lite in tousequence OI His aogged adherence to tne Union, A Ridolb-hy Lord Dundreary. The rain, which commenced at five o'clock yesterday morning and continued until noon, is not likely to afiect the river in any respect, unless it may have been heavier and more protracted above. The Mattie, which has been aground above, got down yesterday with a big trip for Cairo and ports below. The Delaware got down Sunday morn ing and" returned on Sunday to Louis ville.
