Evansville. Iud., Sept. 23, 1863. FRIDAY. ...OCTOBER 16 M. THAYER, Editor. J. N. S I L, VERT HORN, Associate The News. From all the indications it is evident that the Army of the Potomac is on the eve of another trial of strength with the rebel army of Virginia, if the engage ment has not already taken place. For some days past the two armies have been making strategic movements for the pur pose of securing either a choice of posi. tion in which to fight, or the advantage of a surprise. These maneuvers have at last brought the two armies face to face rear the old Bull Kun battle-field. Twice is the Union army been driven from that bloody field with heavy loss. It is to be hoped they will be more successful on the third trial. The rumors of Gen Meade's removal we cannot think bare any foundation. It cannot be possible that the Administration will repeat its foolish policy of changing commanders in the presence of the enemy. If it does, the people will regard the fate of the army as sealed, and ?ill not be surprised to hear that it has again been defeated and driven into the Washington intrench ments. We have always thought a mis. take was made when General Hooker was removed. We are very certain a blunder, which may be attended with fatal consequences, will be committed if Gen. Meade is removed at thi3 time. We utterly discard the report. From General Schofield's Department we have intelligence of the rout and dispersal of Shelby's guerillas. They have scattered only to collect again in some other part of the State to contin ue their schemes of plunder and murder. Gov. Gamble's rose water policy will never rid Missouri of guerrillas. The disease requires more heroic treatment. An application of tbe knife alone will save the life of the State, and protect the loyal people. ye also Laws Lte- telegrams from Charleston. The rebels have concentra ted a fire upon Fort Wagner that is quite annoying, as well as fatal. The boys, however, don't suspend their work. They are determined to humble the pride of the haughty city, and will suc ceed, if patient labor and unflagging eourage can accomplish the result. The rebels are suffering terribly for the necessaries of life and are driven to desperation. tSf The anxiety manifested by the Democrats of this city to repudiate Val landigham, after they ascertained tbe result in Ohio, gave rise to several very amusing c:.'cumstances. Judge Parrott, who is one of the most industrious in a quiet way of the Democratic leaders, met one of our physicians on Wednes day and at once proceeded to set himself right on the Valhindigham question. " The nomination of Vallandigham," he said, "was very unfortunate; it had pulled down the Democratic party in Ohio and seriously damaged it in all the other States. He had always regarded it as a thins thatouht not to have been , . , . . . , done. A tew minutes afterwards the Doctor met Mr. McBride, who, by tbe way, with manly pluck, stands by Val- landigham and don't " turn tail" on a , e , . , j . pohtical Inend, simply because he is badly defeated. The Doctor, thinking his conversation with Jnd"e Parrott too good to keep, &t once repeated it to Mr. Mc- Unde. Ine latter made no attemptlto j- , . j. , , T , , , , disgiHse hts dtsgast at the J.jdjjes lack of poitttcal pluck. " Hurripb," said Mr. McBride, '' do you call Judge Parrott a Democrat? I know all about his De mocracy." To fully appreciate the ap propriateness of the sneer, it is only nec essary to call to mind that a rew years ago, Judge Parrott was a Whig and most violent opponent of Democracy. Another Epoch. Tuesday was a bright day for the I'nion. In addition to the unparralled victories achieved in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Iowa and Nebraska. Gen. Sherman defeated a large force of rebels near Colliersville, Tenn., punishing them severely. V hen the rebels, who numbered near 8 to 1, demanded his surrender. Sher- man replied: The United States Gov- ernment paya me for fighting, not for snrrendering. If you want me, come and take me. Without cannon Sherman drove the reoeis nacK with heavy loss. A correspondent of the Owens boro Monitor very, clearly shows thtt Yeaman received a majority of all the votes that .could be cast in the district. The 19th Regulars. Much solici tude is felt to k now the condition of the 19th Regulars, whether they participated in the late battle, kc. A letter received by Esquire Curtis, of this city, from his son in company A, tells the sad fate of thi g gallant regiment. They were In the hot test part of the fight, and twelve out of fifteen officers in the first battalion were lost. Company A, which was raised in this city, lost forty-three men. They stood at their post to the last, and in two companies, we understand, not a. man or officer escaped being killed or wounded. We also learn that the regiment was so decimated as to be unable to retain its organization, and that it will probably be merged with the loth U. S. Infantry. Ind. Journal, 14th. NEWS BY TELEGRAPH. A Washington special to the World says it is generally beleived our army will take up, for a time, a position with its center resting on the Orange and Alexandria railroad at a'oout Catlett's Station. The' failing back to this point has been for some time talked about, if not determined, at headquarters. The receut engageinu:t on the Rapi dan, in which a regiment of New Vork cavalry was so badly cut up, and a large portion of the 130th New York regiment taken prisoners, illustrates the inexpe diency of maintaining so lengthly a line as that of the Rapidan. Catlett's Station is some distance this side of Warrenton Junction, near which Gen. Meade has established his headquarters previous to the late advance to Culpepper. The Herald's Washington special says it is not true, as reported in several New York journals, that the Government has any intention of resorting to volunteer ing instead of draft. It is true conscrip tion has not realized as many men as has been expected, and it has besides proved very costly, but now the ma chinery is in working order all over the North. 1 e Administration believes it the easiest way to secure men. The mil itary autl i ities, after all that has been said, are s- I of the opinion that a draft is the cheapest and most expeditious means of securing an army, besides dis tributing more evenly the hardens of war among the whole population. It vill therefore be persisted in. OHIO ELE TION. Cincinnati, Oct. If.- Returns from 54 counties gives Brough 52,144 majority a gaiii of 47,772. Of these counties 15 gave Vallaiidighaut a majority. To-day has been a very severe day at Wgneri more so- than any we have experienced since our occupation of the fort. The firing has been mostly from James' batteries, j Three men were killed and two woan ded during the day. One shell exploded in the doorway of a bomb-proof, killing and wounding five. 'Forts. Moultrie, Simpkins and Bragg, fire cautiously at the working parties in Wagner and Gregg. They have exact range, and plant their shells and shot with deadly effect and accuracy in the works. They have been practising 1 3 fire al most simultaneously, so as to make the cover of our men less reliable against shot'eoming in diverse directions at al most the same moment. Our excellent- bomb-proofs preserve the men from most of the missiles, but still the casualties are numerous. One of otir 200-pounder batteries, that has been silent for a week, re-opened this morning, on Forts Sumter and others. October 10. The rebel fort Johnson, is again silenced. A skilfully aimed shot entered embrasure yesterday, the and dismounted their gun. From Army of Potomac. Heavy Artillery Firing on Wednes day and Thursday near Callelt'a Station. New Von f. 15. The Trihime has the following, from the army of the Potomac, 14th: Last evening onr cavalry encountered the enemy near Catlett's Statiou and towards Warrenton. A brisk artillery fire commenced, and lasted till late. It commenced again this morning and lasted all the forenoon. This afternoon heavy canonading commenced along our lines, lasting till evening. It seemed evident that we had driven the enemy back. It is thought by some that Lee has his entire army in front of Meade. It is believed no con siderable amount of in lantry has yet been engaged. From Missouri. Rebels under Sbelby utterly Routed. Washington, Oct. 15. Headxuarters have to-day received dispatches fromGen. Schofield, dated St. Louis 13th, stating that Gen.
