And one lies there whose precious love Was " manna " to my soul ; He has passed away frcm death to life. From death to "Glory's goal." Still ia the form we loved so well. Cold is the kindly hand ; Tbe loving eye now closed in death, WU1 wake iu the spirit land. And at twilight when the echoes Seem waking far and near, We see our loved ones face again, His loving vsiee we hear. Tbe old familiar strain comes back, The tones of other years ; They sweep the chords of mem'ry's harp, And eyes o'erflow with tears. From many a bloody battle-field Will come the saddened tone. The correspon dent of the Commercial says the mo ment the rebels saw that in the retreat from the Kapidan of our army on Satur day last, it was Gen. Meade's intention to reach the north bank of the Rappa hannock in safety, they commenced a rapid march to turn our right flank. But Gen. Meade was too soon for them and had taken up his position on the north bank of that stream. Nothing daunted, however, by this failure, the en emy has continued to advance, even to the north bank of the Rappahannock, and yesterday was in Gen. Meade's front in considerable force. It is reported that skirmishing was kept up all day, and that our army fell back on the line of the railroad. It is said that Lee appeared in force again and commenced an attack. Washington is seething with excite ment over the rumor. It is fully believed that a battle has commenced and that Gen. Meade's re treated to obtain the choice of a battle field, desiring to reach Manassas if possi ble. Lee will fight with the Rappahon nock behind him and has not it is believ ed superior numbers. No one wonld be surprised to hear on the heels of such belief, that the Rebels had been suddenly reinforced. Of course all sorts of rumors are afloat. Gen. Meade is much stroDger than is generally supposed. On Monday morning two regi ments, the 4th and 13th Pennsylvania, were sent forward to Jefferson, about five miles from Sulphur Springs, and the first were sent out to Little Washington to reconnoiter. The last named regi ments encountered a large force of the enemy just beyond Amesville, and were surrounded, but gallantly fought their way out, and crossed the river at VVar rentown Ford, about twelve miles above Sulphur Springs. About ten o clock in tbe morning, the enemy advanced on the Fourth Pennsyl vania Cavalry, which were at Jefferson, with cavalry, showing heavy infantry support in the rear, when our cavalry, : seeing they were being overpowered, fell j back slowly, contesting the ground to a large -force on this side of Jefferson, ufiioro Clrticrcr vh.n lprl t.hpsr rpmmpntw in : person, dismounted a portion of his men, and sent them out as skirmishers, their horses having been sent back to Sulphur Spriugs.
