returned with a couple of men, who were
identified as the parties who took Major
Wileman from his home. They were

The
Louisville Journal of Saturday
nays:
The report so industriously circulated
about the streets yesterday that a large
rebel force had crossed the Cumberland
river at Salina, and was marching into
this State, is not true. Some seven days
ago, Wheeler attempted the passage of
the river at the point indicated, but hig
signal discomfiture by the gallant Wilder
has become a part of the history of the
war. We hare the best of reasons for
asserting that at the present time there
is no considerable body of rebel troops
in Kentucky. Even the straggling bands
of guerrillas, whose depredations some
ten days ago were so bold are being
daily depleted by death, wounding, and
capture, and steps have been taken by
our military authorities to prevent any
more of their predatory incursions.
A correspondent of the St Louis Dem
ocrat declares that General F. P. Blair's
repugnance o the restrictions upon the
Mississippi river trade arises from the
fact that a lot of choice liquors he had
ordered shipped to his camp was inter
cepted by the aforesaid restrictions, to
the great and continued drouth of the
aforesaid Blair.

the amount may have been, the Govern

The Louisville Democrat must
feel very sorrowful over the recent elec
tions. It said on Wednesday :
" The election yesterday in the States
of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Iowa, it is
probable, settles the policy of this coun
try for four or five years, and, in all
likelihood, the fate of the Union in all
time to come. If the Democratic ticket
is defeated in those States, it portends
the adheston to the present suicidal
policy, with its attendent horrors cf
plunder and slaughter."
The Democrat is correct, we think, in
its opinion that the policy of the country
is settled for four or five years. The
Conservative faction has not the shadow
of a chance to carry a solitary State in
the next Presidential electiou. Old
Kentucky will go by at least ten thou
sand majority for the Free Soil candi
date for the Presidency. Freedom is
now the fixed policy of this nation.
