Enquire of CHARLES HARRINGTON. Evansville. Ind., Sept. 23, 18G3. FRIDAY OCTOBER 23 K M. THAYER) Editor. J. K. SUiVERTHORN, Associate. The News This morning is not of an exciting na ture. The Army of the Potomac con tinues in motion, and has advanced as far as Warrenton without meeting with anv resistance. The whereabouts of the main body of Lee's army is still a matter of conjecture. There is no probability of a fight, we think, although the Presi-r1--1 is said to be so anxious for one i. - he is willing to assume all the re sponsibility of a defeat in case such a misfortune should result from a trial of strength. If the President was reallv anxious for a fight he should have or dered Meade to make a stand instead of running. The War Department announces that all officers and men of the United States Army captured and parolled previous to the 1st of September, 1863, are duly exchanged, and they are ordered to join their respective regiments immediately. The steamer Courier has been raised. She i3 said to be all right below her hull, and her machinery will be mostly saved in a damaged condition. The rebels in Arkansas are having a quarrelsome time. The officers fuss and the men desert The country surround- rrxcr A vl-orlolnVila !e Tornrfor1 full nf rlpQPr ting soldiers. Gen. Price challenged Gen. Holmes to fight a duel, which the latter declined. Mutual friends finally got the difficulty between them amicably arranged. We publish in another place Gen. Burnside's official report of his opera tions in East Tennessee. Thus far, he has been eminently successful. A Company of the 1st Mississippi cav alry, (colored,) has been mustered into the service at Vicksburg. A full regi ment will soon be ready for the field. Their knowledge of the country will make them capital scouts. Adjutant General Thomas is still at Goodrich's Landing, giving his attention to the organization of colored troops there. An officer who was recruiting for the 7th United States Colored Regiment, in Maryland, was killed by a prominent slave owner of St. Mary's county. The murderer made his escape and has prob ably joined the rebel army. . The rumor of Gen. Meade's removal is revived. Both Generals Sedgwick and Sickles are spoken of as his suc cessor. There is probably no foundation for the report Mr. V. L. Pruyn has been nominated by the Democrats of the Albany, New York, District, for Congress, to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation ot Erastus Corning. Extensive arrangements are being j made in Cincinnati to give General Rosecrans a handsome reception, when j he reaches that city. The Ohio Brigade at Memphis gave Brongh 1,592 vote3, to 84 for Vallandig- j ham. Good fob New Hakmoxt. We have j received a list of the names of the citi zens of New Harmony, with the amount contributed by each to the .Sanitary ; Commission, in response to Chaplain LatBcr'a recent appeal to them. The ; subscription, everything taken into con lltstli ilioH, is the most liberal made by any village in the State. The whole amount subscribed is seven hundred dol lars and fifty cents, and the committees expect to raise more soon. We will publish the list to-morrow. Kentucky Items. His old shop, on Portland Avenue, below Twelfth street, with its quaint sign, "P. M. Soap ' and Candle Factory." will be remember ed by all Gen. Grierson, who has become famous as the hero of the dashing cavalry raid through several Confederate States, was honored at his home in Jacksonville, 111., by a public reception, marred, how ever, by the presentation of a silver tea The gift is as incongruous for a soldier's acceptance as a distaff would have been for Hector or Ulyeses when they returned crowned with victory. He was in Fort Lafayette some months ago, was released on his parole not to give help or information to the enemy, and was recently caught, at we are informed, endeavoring to make his way to the South throueh our lines, with medicines and arms. The whole army advanced to within sup porting distance during the day. The railroad to Gainesville has been re opened. The Times' Washington dispatch says stock speculators to-day endeavored to create an impression here and over the wires, that Secretary Chase will soon throw upon the market a large amount of exchange on Eu -cpe, and so reduce the premium on goid. He will do no such thing, beyond paying the interest on the public debt in November. Five more regiments 'of the Invalid Corps have been organized, viz ; the 3d, 6th, 11th, 12th, and 13th. All our informants state that Lee's and Stu art's forces number over 70,000 men. With this force it sounds strange to have them falling back. It is said the want of enpplies was the cause, and that when they get within the reach of trans portation they will make a stand. The Herald has the following : Army of the Potomac, f Oct 21, 1863. Among the camp rumors bearing the semblance of truth, are that Lee's head quarters are now at Culpepper, Ewell's and Hill's corps between Culpepper and Warrenton. Lee is greatly disappointed at the failure of his plan to occupy Cen terville and Bull Run field before Gen eral Meade could march his troops and send supplies back to that point That Lee intended not only to force Meade to fight him at Centerville, but proposed to take up his winter quarters there. That. Lee's army is discouraged and disheart ened. That the Blue Ridge is full of rebels waiting an opportunity to desert and come into our lines.
