SATURDAY OCTOBER 24 THE FUNNY CORNER A" dying negro was told by his minister that he must forgive a certain darkey against whom he seemed to en tertain very bitter feelings. " Yes, yes, " he replied, " if I dies I forgive dat nigga: but if I gets well dat nigga must take car. " A declamatory counsel, who des pised all technicalities, and tried to storm the court of the East India Com pany by force of eloquence, was once ut tering these words: "'In the book of nature, my lords, it is written " when he was stoped by this question from the Chief Justice, Lord Ellenborough : Will rn t Vo rrrrA yi oa c fr m r-i - tion page, sir, if you please. " said the customer. " No, sir, " "Well, then will ye please send this? I just want my brother to know I am here, " handing the following: " To John McFlinn at New YorK (signed) Patrick McFlinn. " It was sent as a tribute to Patrick's shrewdness. " Do you consider lager beer intoxica ting?" " Are yoa going to any watering place this summer?" asked a young friend of Mrs. Partington on a rainy day lately. She had just put up the window to keep out the damp and disagreeable air, and pulled her handkerchief more up over her shoulder to keep off the chill. " Watering places," she said, with a gen tle tap of the cover of her box, at the same time looking at Ike, who was en gaged in making kite out of the last Puritan Recorder, that the dame had just laid by for her Sunday reading; " watering places I don't think much of now-a-days. There aint no need of 'em since the luckymotives have run off the stages; but once as the old pumps stood by the waysides under the ambigu ous trees, with a hollow log for the cat tle to drink out of, it seemed like a horse in the desert, as some of em used to say. My dear madam," said her young inend, I mean the fashionable watering places whereeople go to spend the summer." " Oh," she replied, "that's it, is it? Well, we needn't go away from home to find a watering place to-day; and them that do, depend upon it " here she laid her mouth close to his ear and spoke in a whisper " they mo for something else besides the water !" She gave him a queer look as she said this, and pointed significantly to the little buffet in the corner, where an old-fashioned cut-glass decanter stood surround ed by a dozen little glasses, as if they were young decanters just hatched out, bnt what she meant we dare not attempt to explain. Ike just then finished his kite by burning the holes for the " belly band " with the small point of Mrs. Par tington's scissors that had been heated red-hot for that purpose. WATCHES & JEWELRY. It is charged in the New Tork papers that the advance in gold was the result of a plot concocted by a company of capitalists, and not the consequence of any alarm regarding disasters to the Government It is stated that an amount of gold was contributed equal to about four millions of dollars, and about the half of it shipped to England, and the remaining half kept at home, the inten tion being to draw against the amount shipped, as soon as gold would advance. The large purchase of gold in the first place, and the large shipment in the sec ond place, was well calculated, under ex isting circumstances, tney knew, to ex cite the market and nut up prices, and they were correct If this be true, and it has been stated with great positivoness by the New York papers, the rascals en gaged are guilty of combining to injure the credit of the Government, and ought to be hanged. It is stated that, in order to avoid suspicion, they managed to have the gold shipped by regular houses. It is possible that the whole story may be untrue, but it looks plausible. It is well known that the balance of trade is now, and has been for 6ome time, against this country. During the month of Septem ler it took over three1 millions of dollars to make up the balance at New York alone, which, however, 13 the chief port, and the defu-. ncv the current month will l-,e vastly greater, so that aside from the war causes we may look for a high gold premium, unless some change should take place to turn the balance of trade in our favor. As soon as our farmers shall learn that the present high prices of domestic produce cannot be sustained, and that the failure of the corn crop is not so bad and so general as is supposed, prices of produce will come down to an export point, and this evil will be reme died to a great extent. We will have as much pork and lard .to spare to ship to Europe as there was last season, and have enough left for home consumption, notwithstanding tnat there win be a fall nig on in the crop this season as com pared with last. There is also an im mense surplus of wheat, and all will be taken if prices suit Of this there can be no doubt, even though unusually large crops have been gathered in England and elsewhere. The fluctuations in gold, durinir the week have been frequent, and large; at one time it wa3 down to 148 in New lorK, but quickly advanced to 151. On .1. i our market the -.i ...... t""- Kuia, as xn our maruet t ip r.r,n i , uouai, uuuuaieu in response to ttv, n., York market, with a general disposition on the part of outsiders to sell, and there was therefore, an unusually large amount bought by the dealers. The supply of Exchange was largely increased, heavy amounts having been sent herefrom Chi cago, Cleveland and Toledo, and then the heavy amount drawn against the shipments of Government cotton sold here on Monday. All have swelled the amount beyond what had been anticipa ted, and the market was extremely dull at the close, and dealers were selling at five-twentieth of one percent prem., and refusing to buy at par, exeept from regu lar customers. We quote the selling rates at l-5l-100th prem. Currency has become quite close, and there was a good deal of inconvenience experienced yesterday in consequence. The large amount paid to the Govern ment for the cotton sold, and which went out of circulation, tended largely to this scarcity, as the whole amount of cotton sold was closely up to 3,000 bales, the proceed of which were not far from $000,000. Flour and wheat have been very dull, and prices are lower. Corn and oats ruled a shade easier, but have been in fair demand at our quotations. Rye in demand and firm. Hardly a word said about hogs; the ideas of feeders are so high that packers or jobbers have settled down to the con clusion that there is no use in attempt ing to make contracts. Indeed, at over $5 packers generally think it hazardous to enter into any engagements. Very little preparation making to pack for the foreign market which is in striking con trast to the state of things existing at this time a year ago, the truth is, except ing to a limited extent, the present prices asked for hogs preclude the possibility of shipping pork to any market in Europe, and this is the general opinion. The corn, wrncn was cut off by the August frost, will be fed to hoss or cattle. and i- i , - mah.e iair pork; no otner disposition can be made of it than this, so that the price of merchantable corn cannot influence the result; and as stock hogs are unusu ally abundant throughout the West, and in good condition, they will be brought to market from the districts where the corn is most injured, but fatted better than is expected. It is inconsistent to suppose that because as great a number of hogs may not be brought than was last season, there is to be a scarcity of pork, and this, too, in the face of the fact when there is the product of half an ordinary hog crop of last season's meat on hand. The grocery market is fair but tjuiet There is a fair jobbing de mand. NOTICE. The river is slowlv reccdino- at this point, but the heavy and protracted rain of Thnradny night, with the reported well in the different tributaries above, will probably retard it if it does not en- irely unest the decline. At Pittsburg the river lias risen sevi'ii BeHeti since our last renorl. with 3 feet 8 inches in the channel, which renders avigaiioii tolerable for low-water boats. We have lieen without n river report train 1 'iticin-miti For two or three (fays. At last aceoutits the river was staiionnrv there, with 55 inches in llie channel. It was raining there yesterdav. The Missouri Democrat Iff Tliursdm has the following: The river fell half an inch duriuir the forty-eight hours ending at nine o'clock yesterday morning. n. .1 le io jairo mere is in ine cnannei tour feet ten inches of water and stationary. Below Cairo there is an abundance, and consequently no boats getting agrouud. In the Missouri there is 27 inches be low Jefferson City and 30 inches above, anu on a stana. The Tllinoin hnn risen a. liitln knt ia now on a stand with 26 inches on the bars, Irom the mouth to reona. There is 3 feet of water to Keokuk. Half way above that, to St. Paul, it is rising slowly, and at and above St. Paul it is riging more rapidly. The Cumberland and the Tennessee are at a good stage for boating purposes, and the Lower Ohio, below these rivers, is in fine order. The weather continues cool, and very pleasant and dry. Business is very brisk in the Govern ment; but little else is doing. The fact is, Government has monopolized nine tenths of the tonnage for military pur poses; that is, to supply the armies of the Union with forago and other sup- nliea. which those armies are linnnd to have if every boat, without exception, snouiu lie required ior me purpose. The Cumberland is fbrtiuaatrdv injoni. made the most of while it remains up, and consequently, it will be dotted all over with steamers principally stern wheelers from this port, loaded to their utmost capacity with grain, &c, for Chattanooga and elsewhere. We learn that a dozen or so steamers, laid up at Cairo, have been called to this port, by telegrapi, to load immedi atelv for the Cumberland. Whenever the Ohio at Cincinnati, Pittsburg and points below shall rise sufficiently, the beautiful exhibition will be seen, of somewhere about one hnn dred steamers bound down that river for St Louis, coming hither tog into active service in the trade that will appear the most suitable. Most of them will go South, in Government service or on pri vate expeditions. We presume there will be sufficient business for alL In the meantime, there are, perhaps, not half a dozen boats above Louisville light enough to carry any freight to the mouth of the Cumberland. Owing to this fact, nearly all army supplies have to be purchased here, and shipped from this point Pilots are a class of men singularly useful to society, and their services are invaluable to the Government The Government has many of them constant ly in exclusive service, and can easilv get more whenever in want of them The process . for procuring them has lately been reduced to a simple science. Admiral Porter, a few days since, sent to General Schofield, from the Lower Mis sissippi, requesting him to send down six pilots for gunboat service. The names of all the unemployed pilots, written on sl.ps, were put in a box, and a boy was directed to draw out six names. The following gentlemen, and one more whose name we did not learn, got prizes: Geo. Cayton, John Way, Bill Munday, Jim Russell and Geo. Kobirds. This is called drafting pilots. Dave Hiner brought the megsage from the Admiral. Cayton hired Ben. McMann to take his place, which he promised to rln in a fo-ar days. The pay to pilots in Governmeni service, is f250 per month. It is hinted that all the names will be drafted from on all future occasions. The favorite May Duke arrived at 4 o'clock yesterday morning from Cairo, and left again at 2 o'clock on her return under command of that veteran officer and clever gentleman, Capt. Josh V. Throop, with the affable and polite Billy Dunn in the office. She had a nice trip both ways. The Delaware got in from Louisville at noon yesterday, and returned towards evening. She reports navigation ex tremely difficult between this citv and the Falls. The Colonna is due here this morning, and if she arrives, she will he the reg ular mail and passenger packet for Cai ro.
