Bir I never dispute with fools!" said a
gentleman who was getting the worst of
an argument " No," was the reply,
" you are very sure to agree with them."
" Did he not make several visits
after the patient was out of danger?" was
the question of a lawyer in cross exam
ining a witness called to prove a doctor's
bill, in one ot our courts a tew days ago.
"No," replied the witness, "I thought
the patient was in danger as long as he I
continued his visits.
Try to be Useful.
" You can all be useful if you will, j
boys," said a teacher to his class one
Sabbath. " If you cannot do a great
deed you can do a little one."
The boys said nothing, but the teacher :
was mistaken. Clearly, they did not be
lieve they could be of any use, so he
added:
" Well, only try."
" How shall we try ? " asked one of the
boys, timidly.
" Keep your eyes open and ycur hands
ready all this week, and tell me next
Sunday if you have not managed to be
useful in some way or other, said the
teacher.
" We will," replied the beys.
The next Sabbath those boys gathered
round their teacher with smiling lips, and
eyes so full of light that they fairly twin
kled like stars. He smiled in response
and said:
"Ah, I see by your looks that you all
hf-ve something to tell me."
" We have, 6ir; we have," replied the
boys in a choru3.
Then each one told his story.
"I," said one, "thought of going to
the well for a pail of water every morn
ing, to save my mother trouble and time.
She thanked me so much, aid was so
greatly pleased, that I mean to keep on
doing it for her."
1 And I," said another boy, " thought
of a poor old woman whose eyes were
too dim to read. I went to her house
every day and read a chapter to her
from the Bible. It seemed to give the
old lady a good deal of comfort I can't
tell you how much she thanked me."
A third boy said: "I went walking
along the street, wondering what I could
do. A gentleman called me and asked
me to hold his horse. I did. He gave
me five cents. I have brought it with
me to put in the missionary box."
" I was walking with my eyes open and
my hands ready, as you told us, said a
fourth boy, " when I saw a little boy cry
ing because he had lost some pennies in
the glitter. I told him not to cry, for I
would help him to find his money. I
did find it, and the little chap dried up
his tears and ran off feelino- verv
happy." 3
A fifth boy said : "I saw my mother
was very tired r-j -? , 7
cross, and mother looked sick and sad.

little wagon. She did, and I gave him
a grand ride round the garden. If you
had heard him crow and seen him clap
his hands, teacher, it would have done
you good; and oh, how much brighter
my mother looked when I took baby in
doors again I"
Thus, by trying, all the boys had found
some way of being useful during the

The river continue- to rise here hand
somely, and is reported as rising all the
way to Cincinnati, with plenty of water
for small craft, and a fair prospect for
larger boats.
The arrivals and departures yesterday
wtra quite large, but most of the boats
being in the employ of " Uncle Sam,"
merely touched as they passed.
The Emma arrived from the Cumber
land river Tuesday nif,'M, and is loading
with forage for Ft. D ;:clson.
She will leave to-day, and persons de
siring to visit that historic place will find
Capt Dnnkin and Henry Miller the chief
officers of the Emma, two most pleasant
and accommodating gentlemen to travel
with.
The D. B. Campbell brought up a fiho
cargo of grain from below yesterday
morning.
The May Duke left at 3 o'clock yester
day with an excellent trip.
The celebrated Sir John Thomas Mc
Combs, whereof the courteous and affable
Ballard is Master, and Mr. John Gwath
mey, with sundry assistants, renowned
alike for attentiveness to business, and
an urbane and accommodating bearing
towards passengers, is clerk, will be the
regular and reliable packet for Hender
son and Louisville this evening. Her
very excellent agents, Messrs. Cox &
Humphrey, will give all further particu
lars and receive freight tor the comely
John Thomas.
The Ollie Sullivan, having been raised,
reached this port yesterday. She is all
O K again, and will l .ad here for Nash
ville. Boat Sunk. The W. C. Mann, we are
informed, was sunk on Tuesday on the
wreck of the Lebanon, at the head of
Hurricane Island, in the same place
where the Ollie Sullivan was sunk a few
ly the Mann was damaged, but fears
were ensertained that she would break
in two, as she lay on the wreck of the
Lebanon.
The Nashville Press of Tuesday, says
that the Colonna, Nellie Moore, and Ca
tawba, were attacked by guerrillas in the
vicinity of Davis's Ripple. The two for
mer escaped capture, but were fired into
by musketry. No one hurt. The Ca
tawba was not in the employ of the Gov
ernment service, and having none but
private freight on board, was allowed to
proceed on her voyage without motesta
tion. The Louisville Journal of yesterday,
says:
" The river is rising slowly at this
point, with three feet four inches in the
canal The rise is principally from the
Kentucky river.
"The river at Cincinuati is falling."
The Big Superior arrived here last
night in fine condition. She will fit up
at once, and will probably go out on
Saturday.
From her officers we learn that the
W. C. Mann had got off the wreck of the
Lebanon, and was proceeding on her
voyage.
The Collossus had not arrived up to
10 o'clock last night.
