' The Parke county Cavalry Com
pany, Capt. Porter, numbering sixty
stalwart men, went into camp at Terre
Haute on Monday.
A Sharp Speculation. The Wabash
Express says a well posted iron-monger,
of Indianapolis, came over to Terre
Haute the other day and bought the en
tire stock of iron held by the Terre
Haute merchants, who discovered after
wards that they could not replace their
stock, except by paying an advance of
4 cents per pound on the prices obtained.
M& The Jeffersonville Railroad has
kU mad to New Albany is still
suspended, with no prospect of its speedy
resumption, the Secretary of War hav
ing, while in Louisville, as is said, de
clared it to be not a "military neces
sity." New Albany Ledger.
We did not know it was expected to
be constructed as a military necessity.
We supposed there was a sufficiency of
energy, capital and public spirit in New
Albany and Jeffersonville, to build the
extension. It is certainly a public ne
cessity, if for no other purpose than
to check the extortionating propensity
of that Livery Stable man who charged
us $3 50 to carry us from New Albany
to Jeffersonville an hour's drive.
A Mr. Buskirk has been removed
from the postmastership of a small vil
lage in Vigo county, on account of his
being a Democrat, and there being no
Republican in the vicinity willing to take
it, the office has been discontinued. N.

He was not removed from office for
being a Democrat unless Democrat and
Traitor are convertable terms. Buskirk
wrote letters to the army, advisino- sol
diers to desert, and promising them the
protection of the Knights of the Golden
Circle, and for that he was removed,
and justly.
The Louisville Democrat winds
up a column and a half of " muddle "
about the finances with the following
bilious paragraph :
Mr. Chase has proved an excellent
financiering tool for the banking interest,
but a poor stick for the people. We have
a dark prospect before us financially. If
the present policy is pursued, repudia
tion is inevitable, from the fact that a
tax necessary to pay the enormous inter
est on the national debt could not be col
lected. The prospect is sickening in
deed. We can say to the Democrat the "dark
prospect " is all in its eye. Nobody's half
as mnch scared as the Democrat.
The Kigger on the Rise.
John Fitch, of the Alton Democrat,
writes from the army:
What a "big thing" in the war in
Tennessee. It makes all the travel and
trade in that region. It is feeding and
clothing the city of Nashville, aud for
that matter, Louisville also. It is ab
sorbing the negro institution almost en
tire. A year has brought about a revo
lution. Twelve months ago negroes were
not allowed to come into our army lines,
being considered an expense and a nui
sance. Now we send out squads to cut
wood, drive teams, and make soldiers of
them.
At Estella Spring, near Tullahoma
I sa- a negro regiment of 1.200 men, on
drill Another regiment now forming at
Nashville has 600 members. When the
army gets into Central Georgia, where
negroes are thick, a large business will
be done in their line. So far as mv ob
servation goes, army Democrats vie'with
their comrades of any other political hue,
in this army use of this peculiar South
ern chattel. The war has destroyed old
names and the force of epithets, and, in
soldier's parlance, to have the least re
gard for slavery is to be a " d d se-
cesh."
'The Bloomington Republican has
had 10 potatoes left at that office which
weighed 10 pound. They were raised,
t says, in Brown countv.

You are already aware tfattt the Presi
dent hiis made a call upon the loyal
States for 300,000 more troops. The
quota assigned Vanderburgh county is
25 . She is given till the 1st of Janua
ry to raise that quota by volunteering.
After that, the deficiency, if any exists,

Vanderburgh county has responded to
all the calls made upon her prompt
ly aud efficiently.
Evansville has been second to none in
die tate either in the patriotism of her
citizens in filling up the ranks of our ar
mies, or in liberality in providing for the
comfort of the sick and wounded soldiers.
It is the earnest desire that she may
continue to hold her present proud po
sition, and that the quota assigned her
under the last call may be filled wi hout
resorting to the draft
On Monday night, a meeting of the
citizens was held in the Court House, at
which committees were appointed to
canvass the difierent wards, and assist
in the work of raising recruits. Last
evening the ward committees met in the
Court House, and among other proceed"
ings unanimously resolved that the co j
operation of the ladies was absolutely
essential to the success of their under
taking, and accordingly the following

Hough is the man to whom Vallandig
ham wrote that it was now too late for
anything but a separation of the South
from the North, and then the East from

All Qniet on tlie Potomac A Fight

Refugee's Story.
New York, Nov. 5. The specials this
morning are barren.
The Herald's Army of the Potomac
dispatch describes the men as in fine
spirits. The sick have been removed to
Washington. The sutler's have moved
back, and the army is unincumbered and
ready for any movement.
The Tribune's says the Commissioner
General of prisoners here received in
telligence that the clothing and blankets
sent to Richmond by our Government,
have been received and distributed to
the prisoners for whom they were inten
ded. No further progress has been made bv
the Commissioners for the exchange of
prisoners.
A refugee from Richmond, a Northern
woolen-spinner, brings the intelligence
that at Manchester, near Richmond, on
the James River, a gunboat clad with
three thicknesses of two-inch iron was
within six weeks of completion, and that
two other iron clads are on the stocks;
that the sense of security was so com
plete that large iron works, private prop
erty, were in process of construction by
a man named Bradley, in Manchester.
Machine shops at the Central Railroad
depot have been greatly enlarged Two
cotton mills had been erected at Man
chester. Permanent improvements had
been made in the Tradeger works, and
the bridges over the rivers. Two woolen
mills in Manchester turn out 1,450 yards
of army cloth per day, which is sold to
the government at $35 a yard.
The force under Lee's command is
positively stated to be now only 30,000.

East Tennessee Free from Rebels

Cincinnati, Nov. 5. A dispatch from
Knoxville, of the 4th, savs East Tennes-
! see is once more clear of rebels, except
guerrillas, who infest our wagon trains
and mails.
The fight at Roan Springs resulted in
a rebel ront, with a loss of 17 killed and
52 wonnded.
Col. Garrard pursued them bevond
. Kingsport The situation is satisfactory,
and weather fair. The troops are in
good spirits.
Advices from Arkansas say that Mar
! madiike attacked our forces at Pine
Bluff on the 28th, and was repulsed.

the election on the 4th for member to
the Confederate Congress was prosemtetl ;
with earnestness by both parties. Thern
are 28 candidates in 10 districts.
The Hon. John T. Gilmer, indepen
dent in the 4lh district, has the field en- ,

severe on Davis' Administration, and in- 1
dignant at the treatment North Caro- j
Una had received at his hands.
Davidson is out with another constitu- j
tional argument against secession.
The Standard appeals to the Con- J
servatives to unite against the Destruc- j
tives on election day. In alluding to
the recent defeat of the democrats of
Ohio and Pennsylvania, the Standard
says the last ray of hope for the South
from the North has departed. The
North is banded against the South by
immense majorities, and that the pros
pects of peace are more distant than
ever.
The Southern people stand alone .vith
the world against them, and they had
better make peace with Providence or
the North very soon.
