33 ai irnumal MONDAY.. ...NOVEMBER 9 THE FUNNY CORNER . "What is toui rank in the army sir? "- "I'm" a private in the 3d Ken tucky." Give me yonr hand, for blowed if yon ain't the first private I have seen in a month." 'Tom, what iu the world put matrimony into vour head? " " Well, the fact is, Joe, I was getting short of shirts." " Providentially Directed." Amon" the attendants at a Methodist Confer ence was a very beautiful and intelligent looking young lady, who drew the ad miring gaze of many eyes, particularly eyes masculine, always on the lookout for pretty iemme iaees. During the inter mission at noon, a spruce young minister stepped up to the presiding elder and said, with an air secrecy 'Did you observe the young lady who sat by the first pillar on the left?" "Yes, " said the elder, "what of her?" " Why, " said the young man, " I feel impressed that the Lord desired me to take that lady for my wife. I think she would make a good companion and help meet in the work of the ministry. " The cider as a good Chritian ought, had nothing to object. But in a few moments another candi date for ministerial efforts and honors and for the name of husband, came con fidentially to make known a like impres sion regarding the same identical young ladjt ! " You had better wait awhile. It is not best to be hasty in determining the source of such impressions, " said the prudent elder. I And he had said well; for hardly were the steps of the second youth cold at his side, ere a third approached with the same story; and while the worthy confi dant still marveled, a fourth drew near with the question-' " Did you notice the fine, noble-looking woman on your left?" " Yes," cried the swelling elder. " Well, sir," went on the fourth victim of that unsuspecting girl, " it is strongly borne in upon my mind that it is the will of the Lord that I should make proposals of marriage to that lad. He has im pressed me that she is to be my wife." The elder could hold in no longer. "Impossible! impossible!" he ex claimed, in an exerted tone; " the Lord never could have intended that four men should marry that one woman!" One of the most movina incidents of filial affection we have noticed lately is that of the man who writes to his brother from Illinois, who says: " I have got one of the handsomest farms in the State, and have it nearly paid for. Crops are good and prices never were better. We have had a most glorious revival of religion in our church, and both of our children (the Lord be praised!) are con verted. Father got to be rather an in cumbrance, and last week I sent him to the poor-house." How very affectionate! That father must love that boy very much. QUEENSWARE, &c. Steanier- The river has beci falling slowly at this point tor 45 bouie, up to iitlduigln Saturday night, hut will probably be found at a stand, or rising, to-day. At Pittsburg thero is five feet in tbe channel, and stationary, as usual. At Cincinnati the river was rising, with six feet large in tha channel. The weather continues fine' and warm, and the prospect for a rain soon is very promising. The Monsoon arrived here from Vicks- burg about 10J o'clock Friday night, with upwards of 500 bal 9 lit cotton, mostly for (!o. -eminent, and ienty of passen gers, en route to Cincinnati. She found no difficulty in getting up, drawing 3J feet, large. The Grand Armada, with the gallant Throop, and his matchless crew, left at noon on Saturday, with a big trip, and looking fascinating as a bird of paradise. The R. K. Dunkersou took a big trip for Green River on Saturday evening. The desirable packet for Cairo to-day will be the unapproachable May Duke, Capt. Gus. Dusouchet with Billy Duncan in the office. Everything will be jbund just right on board, and we hope to see her take out a big trip. The superb Colossus, is the packet due to-day at noon for Louisville. She is neat, trim and fast, and her commander, Capt. Cox. is one of the most courteous genth in,an, with whom it is our pride and pleasure lo be acquaint' ed, and his coadjutor ... Messrs. Bank smith and Dick. Cox, ;:re very muchlv ditto. Secure staterooms and freight re' ceipts early in the dty. The New Albany Ltibjer of Friday thus beautifully and eni litely, discours ed of the pride and monarch of the Louisville line: To-day the famous Big Grey Eagle re enters the Louisvillo and Henderson troHa n command of the equally famed Capt. James A. Lush, ine IJ:g On v Eagle was never looking so well as at present. She has been entirely over hauled, throughout In '1 cabin and ma chinery, and she will take rank as one of the most elegantly-furnished and swift running steamers on the Lower Ohio or elsewhere Her splendid carpets, bought expressly for her in New York, her mag nificent mirrors and landscapes, her lux urious divans, sofas and chairs, her sleep-inducing spring mattresses, her groaning tables, loaded with the delica cies and substantials of the land these are her attractions Who knows Capt. Lusk except to admire and appreciate his many excellencies? And who has traveled with Maj. G(-orge A. Williams, hep first clerk, that did not feel a new light in his heart, radiated from the ge nial sociability of that pleasaut gentle man? Maj. Williams never allows his passengers to complain for even the lack of the smallest attentions. The Eagle leaves at 5 o'clock. The Madison Courier, of Thursday last, says: We learu th it our worthy townsman, Captain William C. Watts, has sold his boat, the high-headed Bostona, to the public's favorite, Captain Dan. Conway. Captain Conway will continue the Bostona in the packet line between this and the Queen City. Although Capt. Conway has passed through some fiery trials since entering the Government service, he is about toe same as he used to be. He has lost nothing of the bril liant attractions that make the popular ity of an officer, but shines forth as he did in the happier days of yore an un exceptionable and most desirable officer and gentleman. A Cairo dispatch to the Missouri Dem ocrat says: The river is rising quite rapidly. Since last report the rise has been fully eight inches. The weather is so warm as to almost be denominated sultry, and we look for more rain before morning. The Missouri Democrat of Friday says : The weather was very fine yesterday Twenty-five steamboats were loading. As a matter of course, nine-tenths of the freight going on board was Govern ment freight Twenty of the boats load ing yesterday, go to the Cumberland, the Tennessee, and the Lower Mississippi. The Missouri Democrat of Saturday says: The river at this point has risen about one foot during the last week. The weather is fine delightful. Busi ness is extremely brisk on the wharf, the loading of boats boats mainly with gov ernment freight There were yestesday, in all, about forty steamers at the wharf, and thirty of them were loadiug. Those loading for the South are medium siz'jd side wheelers and stern-wheelers. The latter are enable to load, and do load nearly or quite to their guards. Some pretty ' trips" are now seen daily going out of this port Nineteen steamers arrived yesterday. The Louisville Journal of Saturday says : The river is rising slowly, with three feet four inches in the canal. 1 be same paper nlso announces the e . T- r t , JT pai'ture Ot the Blr drev Eagle OU Fn- departure of the Bio; Rrey Eagl day evening for Henderson, aud ere this item is read, she will doubtless have come and gone. According to the Journal the Mc Combs may be expected this morning. All wo have said of the Colossus and her officers, will apply, with slight varia tions, to the McCombs and her Ballard troupe. The palatial Big Grey Eagle arrived at 1J o'clock mi Saturday night, ner officers having deemed it prudent to thread their way carefully to avoid all cyllas and carybdis that might be hidden on the right hand or upon the left. She is in. deed a splendid boat now, beter really than when new, and fully merits the high eulogium pronounced upon her by the New Albany Ledger. She had a magnificent trip. Miscellaneous. The hull for Capt. Robert Robinson's new boat has arrived at Pittsburg from Parkersburg, Virginia, where it was built Capt. Win. Colsou and Mr. James C. McVay, both well known river men, are building a very pretty aud staunch steamer for the Pittsburg and Muskin gum river trade. She has been named the " Julia," and it is expected that she will be finished iu about '.wo weeks. The Julia is about the same 1 m and capaci ty of the Emma Graham, though it is claimed that she will nol nraw as much water by six inches a very important item. "Capt. John Pepper's new boat, the Alice Dean, will be launched on Satur day afternoon, from Hambleton's yards in Fulton. She is built on precisely the same model as tbe ill-fated Alice, built by the same gentleman about a year age. She is constructed of heavier timbers, however, and will be supplied with more powerful machinery, which makes it fair to presume she will even prove a faster boat. We learn that Capt. Pegram, and oth ers, who have just finished the Olive Branch, have contracted with D. & J. Howard for lu more splendid pookctn, the timbers for one of which have already been cut out. One of the boats is to be 2'JO feet long, with 4.S feet beam and 8J feet depth of hold. She is to have the machinery of the H. Hill. The other boat is to be 175 feet long, 45 feet beam and 81 feet depth of hold. Her machin ery will bo built by Davis & Co., Louis ville." R GUL R PAOKTS. LOW Water Arrangement.
