1 WEDNESDAY .NOVEMBEU 11 COMMERCIAL. THE FUNNY CORNEE A Good Joke. At one of our up-town hotels is, or was recently, a clerk, whom we will call Haynes, a pleasant, gentlemanly fellow as you will find in a summer's day jour ney, but possessed of an uncontrolable horror of fits. The sight of a man in convulsions unnerves him entirely. Not long since some of his friends conspired to play a practical joke upon him, through this peculiar feeling of his, and one of them was appointed to enter the bar room and fall into a fit of extra strength and frothing at the mouth, while the re;! were to stand by and en joy Haynes' alarm and efforts to relieve j tne unfortunate epeleptic. But there was a good-natured " Judas " in the plot, i who couldn't bear to see a friend's amia- i ble feelings worked upon in that way, j and he went and betrayed the whole af- 1 fair to Haynes. An idea struck him in stantly that he would let the joke go on. and turn the aharp end of it around for : the edification and cure of the gentleman who was to fit himself with a fit so sud denly. The next day, a cold, raw, rainy day, the joker entered the bar-room with a visible attempt to look bad, and, leaning over the stove and shivering, said, "I can't imagine what ails me this morning; Haynes. I feel darts of chilliness run ning over me, and sharp pains in my head. I believe 1 am going to have a fit" Haynes put on the requisite amount of alarm, and slyly deposited two big bucketfnls of cold water under his desk. Joker sat down, made some queer mo tions and noises, and tumbled off his chair in the roughest fit that was ever seen in these days of shoddy suits and diseases born of the draft, lie writhed and foamed as well as be could, and Haynes, in an ecsUcy of well-feigned fright, snatched up one of his buckets of water and dashed it all over him, apply ing a specially liberal libation to his bead and face. This was more than he had bargained for, and he "riz" up a well man with a suddenness that would have ! earned Haynes immortality a3 a doc tor of fits, if the joke hadn't leaked oat Choked and blinded with the i water, and wringing wet, he found voice enough, by the time Haynes had brought out the other bucket, to say that he felt decidedly better. Haynes was generously anxious to make the cure sure with a second " heroic dose " of the extract of pump, but the joker was so confident of his improved health, and looked so utterly forlorn in hia dripping suit, which wasn't nearly as good a fit then, as it was before his fit was cured, that the' second application was spared, and he left a wetter man but hot wiser, as he didn't know till several days after wards that he had been sold in the market he had opened himself. When he did find it out, it is said that his ob servations were largely interspersed with allusions never beard in the pulpit and not particularly admired by respectable people anywhere. It was a good " sell,' and a merited one. Ind. Journal. Cincinnati Markets. Cincinnati, Nov. 10. Fi.OljKnrm at So 25(3 2S. WHEAT unchanged. CORN ad van cad 3(y.4c ; sales at?H(3'."e.
