THAYER, J. S. SILVER. THORN,. Editor. ...Associate. An Important Movement. The Mis sionary Society of the Methodist Episco pal Church, has just appropriated the considerable sum of thirty-five thousand dollars for an object which is of import ance not merely to Methodism , but to the country at large. It is proposed to send preachers to those parts of the Southern States now redeemed of rebel rule, to recall the people to the church and to the Union. The bishops are to make at once a visitation in each of the States ; and they will select and appoint fit men to send amongst the Southern people, who have been abandoned by their ministers, who were in rebellion. The Indianapolis Journal esti mates the number of men who have vol unteered during the past month at three thousand, divided among the several districts as follows: 1st, 150; 2d, 150; 3d, 300; 4th, 250; 5th, 400; 6th, 350; 7th, 350; 8th, 150; 9th, 400; 10th, 300; 11th, 200. We are not competent to speak for other districts, but for the 1st District the Journals estimates are too small. More than 150 have been re cruited within the past month in the counties of Posey and Vanderburgh alone. We feel safe in saying that over two hundred men have volunteered in three counties. In most of the counties in this District great activity has been displayed, and we think that at the least calculation one-quarter of the men call ed for have already been enrolled. But we ought not to stop short of raising our full quota. Therefore, let us work on until that glorious consummation is achieved. We have now in the United States at least two hundred and thirty five general hospitals for the use of sol diers, containing about eighty thousand .patients. To show on what a large i , ... . scaie our Datties nave been fought, as we do everything else, it seems that during four months of 1S62 there were treated at our hospitals twenty thousand nine hundred add thirty cases of gunshot wounds. The wounded of the British army in the Crimean war was only a little over twelve thousand, and their entire hospital accommodations in three years would not have sufficed for the wounded at either of the battles of Shi- 1 .Vl inllAlan, u. Absconded. Charles E. Haack, a German tanner, who has been carrying en business in this place for the past two years, absconded about ten days ago. Good. The report of the resignation of Gen. Burnside, and the appointment of Gen. Foster as his successor, is confirmed, and Gen. Foster is on his way to East Ten nessee. It is reported that McDowell is to be assigned to a command, probably with Baltimore for headquarters. President Lincoln is busily engaged on his forthcoming message, and can see but few visiters. The returns of the Ohio soldiers is changing the character of the elections in many counties of that State. In the Knox and Wayne Senatorial District" J. C. It promises to be neutral, but how can it keep from showing its proclivities with the original editors and proprietors? A cotage train of 21 wagons, which had been captured near Cumber land Gap on Thursday, was recaptured the same day, and seventeen of the re bels killed and wounded. The Cincinnati Commercial has a dis patch from Cairo telling about two men who, on Tuesday night last, disguised as soldiers, went to the residences of two citizens of William county, Illinois, and demanded that they should go with them to arrest deserters. The citizeni demur red ; but the men threatened, represent ing themselves to be part of the Provost guard. Finally the citizens complied; and, it is said, when they had proceeded some distance in the woods, the appar ent soldiers deliberately shot the farmers dead, and left them on the ground. Dear Brethren: The President of the United States, having appointed Thursday, the 26th of November, to be observed as a day of Thanksgiving and Prayer to Almighty God, throughout the United States,' for all the blessings of His merciful Providence, during the past year, I hereby recommend the observ ance of that day for that important duty, by the clergy and congregations of this Diocese. In accordance with the Canon, I ap point, at the celebration of Morning Prayer, in addition to the service provid ed in the Book of Common Prayer, the annexed Prayer of Thanksgiving, to be used, with the Thanksgiving Prayer in that service, after the General Thanks giving; together with the two Collects heretofore set . forth in relation to our National emergencies. I also earnestly recommend that a col lection be made on this occasion for the relief of the destitute families of our gallant soldiers in the field; and the con tributions be paid over to the Sanitary Committees in the several cities and counties in the State. George Upfold, Bishop of Indiana. PRATER OF THANKSGIVING.
