ONCE MORE TO THE BREECH, MY HEARTS OF OAK 1 About one-half of the wood donated to j th families of the soldiers was cut and 1 split yesterday. It is very desirable that it should be finished up to day. Those who did not or who could not participate in the pleasures of yesterday's work, will 6nd themselves fully compen sated, by going out to-day, and they are confidently expected. Who that has a spark of benevolence in his breast, or a drop of the milk of human kindness ia his heart, will be absent at 9 o'clock, this morning? WAR MEETING ! We are authorized to announce that General Carrington will speak at Haub stadt on Tuesday, November 12th, and will canvass Knox, Gibson and Vander. burgh counties to aid enlistments. A Jollt Tnre. There was a high old time yesterday on the corner of Vine and Third Streets. At 9 o'clock or be fore, men full of benevolence and pat riotism, began to assemble, with saw backs aud saws, and axes, prepared to make an onslaught upon the monstrous pile of wood donated by the farmers of Vanderburgh county, on Saturday last, to the families of soldiers. Kratz & Eteilman, with that noble pub lic spirit, and generous benevolence that distinguish them, sent to the ground a ateara engine, and a circular saw and hands to work it This was plaoed with in the center of the lot, and the work at once commenced. The handsome and dignified Council man, from the 8th Ward, Fred. W. Cook came bearing on his shoulders a saw buck aud saw, and his wagon brought a half barrel of his choicest beer, which was deposited at the entrance of the lot, and which was dealt out liberally to those who wielded the saw and axe. By 10 o'clock, at least one hundred persons were on the ground, and the work went bravely on. We have neither time nor space to mention all who were there by name, but we never saw men work with more ener gy or cheerfulness, or more effectively. Jest and repartee flew thick and fast, and the saw and the axe kept time with both, and the pile of nice, tine split wood grew with unparalleled rapidity. It was a la'uor of love, and each seemed to vie with the other to do the most. Unr contemporary of the Staats Zei- tung was there early, and plied bis mus- cle with an energy and effectiveness that j would have done credit to Hercules, in his feat of the Augean stables. A large number of our most promi nent business houses were represented, in the person of their chief or in that of some -of their attachees, and we were both surprised and delighted to see the zeal with which they applied themselves to the labor of love, and patriotic work is which they were engaged. Conspicuous among the crowd we no ticed o it friend M. R. Anthes, Esq", Captain Gus. Lemcke, Superintendent of the Evansville & Cairo Packet and Mail Line, Captain Schoenlaub, of the Brownlow Guards, and confidential clerk of the celebrate firm of Crane, Brown & Dunkerson; W. H. Many business houses and professional firms were not repre sented, but we expect to see them out to-day. It is a noble work, in which all .should engage. Additional Worthies. We add the following names to the long line of wor thies who so nobly responded to the calls of humanity last Saturday: Frederick Kolhaus of Perrv township, 1 load of wood. Oliver Goldsmith of Center township, 1 load of wood. Col. Charles Denby, ia lieu of work on the wood pile, one dollar. W. H. Griffith, on same account, two dollars and fifty cents. A very j spirited match game of billiards, we are told, came off last night at the St. Kich olas, between Ed. Malley, the gamekeep er at the St. Nicholas. an.J omr-U hill. iard player from Chicago. There were indeed two games played, the first for $50 a side, 500 points up, Malley win ning by over 200 points. The second game was played for $100 a side, 500 points up. Ed. won this game, also, by 38 points. There are few men west of Cincinnati, if any, who can beat Malley at this sci entific game. From Washington. L Cavalry Kecoimolaiaiict. Washinoyon, Nov. 17. On Sunday morning the cavalry division of Genera K.lpatrick, under command of General r i ' ; . the Rao dan to Raccoon Ford, to ascer- tain the truth or falsity of the report that --j- - - - j ' - the rebels were falling back on Gordons ville. When our cavalry approached they were met by a few guns from the rebel entrenchments, but oar guns soon silenced them. A small number of rebel sharpshoot ers were seen in the rifle pits, and soon afterwards a small body was discovered. The river was too much swollen byj the storm of Saturday to justify crossing, and so the cavalry returned. The report of Thursday that a rebel force had crossed the Rappahannock and attacked Kilpatrick's forces, is un true. Several English officers are visiting at Gen. Meade's headquarters. Information through a reliable chan nel, from Washington, is to the effect that two of the divisions of Hill's corps nave lelt the Itapidan and gone south, but whether to Tennessee or Fredericks burg, or to demonstrate on the left flank of the Army of the Potomac, does not vet appear. From New York. New Yore, November 17th. About half past 10 o'clock last evening a fire broke out in the drying room of the 5th Avenue Hotel. Before the fire could be extinguished it damaged the building about $1,000. A Fortress Monroe letter to the Com mercial says: Lately heavy reinforcements have ar rived here. Gen. Foster was about making a grand movement, when, on the eve of starting, it was nipped in the bud by an order from the War Department countermand ing the movement. From Texas. Nfw Yobe, November 17. The Her ald has a letter from off Brazos, 5th, giving fnrther particulars of the move ments connected with Banks's expedi tion. A successful reconnoissance of the whole Texas coast has been made by the gunboat Tennessee, and also the mouth of the Rio Grande, passes and bars, and most valuable information as to the depth of water, &c, was obtained, as well as the views of the rebel works, of the force at Sabine Pass, Galveston, Brazos river, and other points. During the cruise a small blockade runner, with arms, ammunition, &c, from Havana, was captured. Firing was heard off Sabine Pass supposed to be in honor of the arrival of Magruder. From Buffalo. UJBurFiti.o, Nov. 17. We learn from a gentleman just from Toronto, that the Hon. Joshua R. Giddings, has been ar rested in Montreal, and held to bail in the sum of $30,000, charged with kid napping. BY LAST NIGHT' o MAIL. From Chattanooga. Chattanooga, Nov. 16. All quiet in front Lookout Battery has been quite vigorously worked to-day, alternately on Hooker's camp and the Moccasin Point and Chattanooga camps. Shells are oc casionally thrown into the town, but the plunging fire is neither accurate nor ef fective. No casualties are reoorted here. Our Moccasin batteries have a splen did range on the camps in Chattanooga Valley, on the east side of Lookout, oc casionally favoring the belief that the in dications were that a battle would be made on Hooker's position, by a large force of rebels, before long; but its strength and advantageous position, which co-operation with our forces gives, has led to the abandonment of the scheme. It is believed that the latest informa tion from scouts contradicts former re ports. It is said that the Western and Atlan ta Railroad is worked to its full capacity in bringing reinforcements to Bragg, and the road from Chicamauga Station, eight miles south, is lined with camps. Ihe rebels aver that the campaign will not be closed without a decisive and bloody struggle for Chattanooga and East lentiessee. Intelligence from East Tennessee to the evening of the 14th is satisfactory. From Nashville. Nasbtilu L Not. 16. Forty-fire pri 2 oners' among them one captain and three lieutenants, captured by Major ritz Uib- bon of the 14th Michigan, at Lawrence- burg, reached the city to-day. The rebel Col Cooper s torce, routed at Lawrenceburg, are now endeavoring to cross the Tennessee. The country around Columbia is clear of guerrillas. Un the lath inst., KodJv cavalry crossed the Tennessee river mi 1 -me to Caligni, near Linnville on the Tennessee & Alabama Railroad and destroyed two bridges and trestle-work. All quiet at the front Lientenant-Colonel H. C. Hodges, chief quartermaster, la ordered to Leav enworth, Kansas. J. L. Donaldson, lieutenant-colonel and assistant quarter-1 master, is appointed to this post. The river is three and a-half feet on j the Shoals. A large lot of coal for Government use has arrived. ' Krom Arkansas and Mississippi, Caibo, Nov. 16. The Little Rock Democrat says deserters report Marma duke to have fallen back south of the Little Missouri river, joining Price on tha road leading from Camden to Wash ington. The whole Southern force is es timated at from 6,000 to 8,000. Marma maduke's men are scouring the country, dressed in Federal nniforms, to detect Union sympathisers, many of whom have been shot and hung. Recruiting is still progressing finely at Little Reck. Private letters from Memphis say the Rebels are reported working at the Mo bile & Ohio and Mississippi Central rail roads, repairing them as fast as possible. Rebel Reports-. Fortress MonrO Nov 16 The Richmond Whig, of November 14, con tains the following: Charleston, Nov. 12. The enemy kept p a moderate fire on Sumter all day from their mortar batteries and two monitors. One monitor and a wooden gunboat moved up to Sullivan's Island, at noon, and shelled the batteries one hour. Charleston', Nov. 13. The firing of the enemy from their monitors and rifle pieces averaged two per minute all last night, and, ib increasing and still going on this morning. The casualties last i night were two killed and one wounded Atlanta, Nov. 13. The firing between our batteries and the enemy s continues ; briskly. Ihe enemy has made a move ment from right to left, either with a view of diversion, in order to attack Lookout, or to send troops to Burnside. The Richmond Whig has the follow ing: Gen. There are no grounds, however, for such fears. Banks has special instructions to avoid all possible difficulty with the r rench, and none is apprehended. Washington, Nov. 16. The experi ment of furnishing supplies to our prison ers of war at Richmond has proved suc cessful. Twenty-four thousand rations and five thousand full suits of clothing sent by the Government, and a large number of articles of convenience sent by the Sanitary Commission, have been duly received, and their reception ac knowledged by responsible parties.
