Petkolect V. Nasebt writes that he
had an interview with the President re
cently, which terminated thus:
"Is ther any little thing I kin do fer
you?" gez he.
"Nothin' partid ler. I wood accept a
small Post-orfis. if sitooatid within ezy
range uv a distilry. My politikle daze
is well nigh over. Let me but see the
old party wunst moar in the assendency
let these old ize wunst moar behold tha
Constitooshin ez it is, the Union ez it
wuz, and the nigger ware he ought 2 be,
and I will rap the mantel uv private life
arownd me, and go in2 delirium tremens
happy. I hev no ambishen. I am in the
sear and yaller leef. These whitnin' lox,
them sunken cheek, warn me that age
and whisky hev dun ther perfeck work,
and that I shell soon go hents. Linkin,

Archbishop Whately. The Boston
Daily Advertiser tells the following
story :
In illustration of his largeness of mind
we recall an anecdote of a rebuke which
he administered to a young British offi
cer, upon the staff of-toe Lord Lieuten
ant, at a dinner at the vice-regal castle
in Dublin, where the Roman Catholic
Archbishop, as well as Archbishop What
ley, were present as guests. The young
officer, forgetting his manners in his
biggoted Protestantism, called across the
table this insulting connundrum:
" What is the difference between a Ro
man Catholic Archbishop and a don
key?" with the answer, '' Because one
wears his cross oefore and the other be
hind." "And now," said Whately, addressing
the offioer, " can you tell me what is the
difference between a lord-lieutenant's
aid-de-camp and a donkey ? " The offi
cer said he could not tell. "Nor can 1,"
rejoined Whatley.
How Methodism Grows in the West.
They tell an incident of Dr. Eddy, the
editor of the Northwestern Christian
Advocate, a religious newspaper of the
Methodist persuasion, which shows the
rapid growth of this region and of the
church he represents. Going out from
the city on one of our pricipal railroads,
in company with another divine, as
the train approached the first station he
was asked by his companion the name of
the place they were approaching. The
Doctor gave it. and remarked causually,
that he had " once dedicated a church
there. " As they came up to the next
station the Doctor, being questioned, de
scribed that also, find added that ha had
" once dedicated a church there." At
length when the train had stopped at the
sixth station, the accompanying divine
straightened in his seat and asked:
" Well, Doctor, did you ever dedicate
a church here? "
"Here!" the Doctor replied, with a
twinkle in his ministerial eye, " Here! 0
ys, I dedicated two churches here! "
His amazed companion concluded to
keep silent at the next station, so it was
passed without a question. But coming
to the next point he could not restrain
his curiosity, but said :
" Well, Doctor, how about dedicating
a church here?"
" I was invited to dedicate a church
here, " replied the Doctor, " but could
not come, because that day I had an en
gagement to dedicate a church at the
station we just passed. "
