SILVERTHORX,. Editor. ..Associate. COMPOSITOR WANTED. A good Compositor can find steady employment by applying immediately at this office. East Tennessee. Our news this morning from General Burnside's department is unusually in teresting. We wish we could say it is of a character to allay all apprehension or anxiety as to the safety of his gallant army. For three or four days past he has been struggling against great odds. Step by step he has been driven back, until his army has been concentrated in and about Knoxviile. His opponent, Longstreet, seems determined to bring matters to a speedy settlement, and at once commenced an assault upon Gen. Burnside's fortifications. Our telegram from Louisville yesterday says that all communication either with Knoxviile or Cumberland Gap has ceased. In addi tion, we have a dispatch from Parson Brownlow, at Barbourville, Ky., stating that there is " fighting all around Knox viile " to-day, (the 19th ) The Parson seems to have been apprehensive that Burnside would be unable to hold the place; and, knowing that he had no reason to expect any mercy at the hands of the rebels if he fell into their clutches, he started in time to save his bacon. Knowing that the Parson is a man of courage, we regsml -W eacaoe from Knoxviile as rather ominous of disaster. There is one thing, we think, the peo ple may rely on. Gen. Burnside will not surrender his command so long as he has a cartridge to fire or a biscuit to eat If he is defeated, hia army will be almost annihilated, for it will not be defeated unless greatly outnumbered. Heavy fortifications exist in and around Knox viile, which will he used to the best ad vantage. We do not see how the rebels can obtain possession of the town, unless our men are forced out by hunger. A dispatch from Washington to the New York Post says Burnside considers his position impregnable, and does not fear Longstreet We wish the dispatch were true, but v.'e fear it is only a barren rumor. Another unfortunate circumstance would resultjin case Burnside is defeated. A large number of paymasters have but recently reached Knoxviile to pay off the troops, and all their treasure, amount ing to several million dollars, would fall into rebel hands. In case the rebels lay siege to Knox viile, failing to take it by assault, we may not expect to get any more definite news from that point for two or three days. About three weeks since, says a j Petersburg, Va., paper, the widow of , , . I . . , . , . . (reneral Helm, (rebel,) Killed at Lnit:a- mauga, who is a sister of Mrs. Lincoln, desiring to go North to rejoin her friends in Kentucky, wrote to both (iff them, bv tiay of trnne. but no notice , o j . whatav- was taken of her. nT, f ii i ' i We learn tliat some of the ladies of this p ace are diecu.-.-ing tbe propriety of getting up a Supper and Tableaux j Exhibition for the benefit of the poor.-1- ! Otcensboro Monitor. Don't stop to consider the propriety, 1 consider the necessity, and "go in." ! Get up the Tableaux and Supper, divide ; j the money among the poor, and while ! i they are enjoying your benefactions go j j on with your discussion. There is no reason why Owensboro should not rise to the front rank among the leading towns of the State. Owens boro Monitor. Aint it rather too uear Evansville, friend Woodruff ? The Owensboro Monitor has been permitted to make the following extract from a private letter from Capt Horn brook. It will be seen that he and his gallant company behave as well in battle as they did while stationed at that place : " We have been having quite severe service, and my proud company which started out over 90 strong, have now some 25 in the hospital In the fight at Blountsville, my company lost two Killed and seven wounded, two perhaps fatally. We were on the hill where the fighting was done, an hour before the other troops came up, and had to contend with great ly superior numbers until the balance of the troops came up. I escaped with my canteen, pants, coat and flwg pierced with musket balls. My men fought and fell like veterans." isuciiAn&riu.v. By the Governor of Indlai The President of the United States, having designated Thursday, the 26th day of November, instant, as a Day of Tnanksgiving. Therefore, I, Oliver P. Morton, Gov ernor of Indiana, do hereby set apurt said day, and call upon tbe people of the tate to observe the same, in accordance with the proclamation of the President. Let the people thank and praise Al mighty God for the many mercies He has shown us during the past year, and pray him with humble hearts, to still pro tect, guide and bless us and restore the inestimable blessings of Unity aud Peace to our bleeding and suffering country. Given at the Executive Department, Indianapolis, this 9th day of November, A. D., 1863. Oliver P. Morton. The next number of the Allan- tic will contain a story in verse by Long fellow, occupying several pages. News from the Army of the Potomac to night con tains nothing of importance. All quiet on the front. The enemy is still in his old position on the Rapidan. A large infantry force is being discovered daily in the rear of their fortifications. Tines Special Washington, Nov. 19. A dispatch reached here to-day from Neal Dow, in Richmond, that 4,800 rations sent by our Government for the relief of our prison ers had been landed from a steamer, and were being distributed. The refusal of the 'rebel authorities to receive them, arose from a misapprehension of the word " requisition, " for " permission " to land commissary stores. The rebel Governmen'. refused to let any officers r riter Richmond, but on ex planation tlv f consented to receive and distribute tb rations. The Trib: 's dispatch dated HE ..i'R8 Army Potomac. ) Nov. 19, 1863, ) rSttys t field reconooisance by about 2U0 of the enemv'x r-Rvalrv woo min yesterday morning at Beverly Ford, re sulting in the capture and wounding of several of the 18th Virginia cavalrv, which was1 on picket within two miles of the ford. A reconnottering force of the enemy charged on them and compelled them to fall on the infantry of the 2d corps, when the rebels returned across the river. No artillery was used. Sev eral desperate conflicts took place on the falling back of our cavalry. A wild rumor, has been extensively circulated here for the past ten days among the various camps, causing con siderable excitement among the pickets. The story is told of the discovery of some of our men belonging to the 2d Corps, with their throats cut from ear to ear, just outside of our picket lines. The soldiers state that these murdered men stole out from camp after dark in search of something to eat, and were caught by guerrillas, who feared to shoot them on account of alarming our pickets. It is said, among our men, that several sol diers have mysteriously disappeared, and facts give color to the horrible report. An inquiry at headquarters fails to elicit any information regarding this rumor, and it is probably a canard. The Richmond Enquirer complnins of Frenc'u journals, for tneir repeated asser tions that instructions have been sent to Slidell to make no concession, and listen to no discussion relative to the subject of slaverv. and declares that such in structions have not been sent, because they are unnecessary. Neither Slidell nor the Confederate Government, says the Enquirer, has the power to make any concession, or the right to enter into any discussion of tbe questions relating to the domestic institutions of the country. The people have not conveyed any such power to the Confederate agents. Surgeon General Hammond recently returned from a tour of inspection to the Departmert of the Gulf.
