NOVEM BER 25 The Gettysburg Solemnities We have not room for full details of tue dedication of the National Cemetery at Gettysburgh, on the 19th inst. Ev erything passed off pleasantly and the ceremonies were exceedingly aolemn and imposing- Ah.hnno-h tL ,,a ; (O WsUTTU 1A1 attendance numbered its tens of thou ! sands, there was little cheering or other demonstrations; that usualv nhaVar.trizft me proceeKimgs ot such vast assembla ges. All seemed to partake of the sol emnity arising from the circumstances which called them together. The proceosion was grand. It was compossed of the military and civil dig nitaries of the land, with committees from different religious bodies and dele gations from charitable societies with appropriate music. The proceedings at the stand were ex ceedingly interesting. After the per formance of an original dirge, comnosed by Mr. Bergefield, of Philadelphia, for the occasion, Rev. T. H. Stockton was introduced and offered up the following prayer, which we copy in full as a model of that species of eloquence: PRATER IJY REV. T. H. STOCKTON. Oh God, our Father, for the sake of i,ny '7.n- our baviour, inspire us with Ihy Spirit, and sanctify as to the right fulfillment of the duties of this occasion. W e come to dedicate this new historic centre as a National Cemetery. If all departments of the one Government which Thou hast ordained over our Un ion, and of the many Governments which Thou hast subordinated to the Union, be here represented if all classes, relatione and interests of our Mended brotherhood and people stand severally and thorough ly apparent in Thy presence, we trusfit is because Thon hast called dh: thnt. Thw blessings await us, and that Thy designs may be embodied in the practical result of the incalculable and imperishable good. Aud so with the Holy Apostle and with the church, cf all lands and ijges, we unit in the ascription, "Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort who comforteth us in all our tribulations, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God." In emulation of all angels, in fellow ship with all saints, and in aymnathj, Tifi1 X ,8Ufterers; in remembrance nf Thy works, in neverence of Thy ways cct"lfc with Thy wofd- we tions. Thy creative glory, Thy redeeming grace, Thy providential goodness, and the progressively richer and fairer devel opments of Thy supreme, universal and everlasting administration. In behalf of all humanity, whose ideal is Divine whose first memory is Thy im age lost, and whose last hope is Thy im age restored; and especially in behalf of our own nation, whose history nas been favored whose position is so peerles ' whose mission is so sublime, and whose future i3 so attractive we thank Thee for the unspeakable patience of Thy compas sion, and for the exceeding greatness of Thy loving kindness. The contemplation of Eden, Calvary and Heaven of Christ in the Garden, on the Cross, and on the Throne nay, more, of Christ as coming again in all subduing Power and Glory, we gratefully prolong our homage. By this altar of sacrifice, and on this field of deliverance on this mount of salvation within the fiery and bloody line of these munitions of rocks, looking back to the dark days of fear and tremb ling, andto the rapture of relief that came after, we multiply our thanksgiv ings, and confess our obligations to re new and perfet our personal and social consecration to Thy service and glory. Oh ! had it not been for God ! For, lo, our enemies, they come unresisted mul titudinous, mighty, flushed with victory and sure of success. They exulted on our mountains they reveled in our val leys they feasted they rested they slept they awaked they grew stronger, prouder and bolder every day. They spread abroad ; they concentrated here. They looked beyond this horizon to stores of wealth, to the haunts of pleas ure and to the seats of power in our capi- j tal and chief cities. But in a lare-er sense we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men living and dead who struggled here have consecrat ed it far above our power to add to or detract. Applause.J The world, will little note or long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. Good, good, and ap plause. It is for us, the living, rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work that they have thus far so nobly SrS JMmtL & tfa'SrwK task remaining! before us, that from these honored dead we take increas-tttcj- m.x' (u ino mil measure of their devotion; that we here high ly resolve that the dead shall not have died in vain (applause); that the nation shall, under God, have a new birth of freedom; and that Government of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish from the earth. Long continued applause. That this was the right thing in the right place, and a perfect thing in every respect, was the universal encomium. The President read in a modesf, unpre tending style. A Gettysburgchoir of ladies, assisted by the Philadelphia baud, then sang the j following dirge, written by J. G. Percival, the music by A. Delany, and the whole arranged by M. Bergfield: Oh ! it is great for our country to die I Whose ranks are contending, Bright is the wreath of our fame, filory awaits us for aye ! Glory that never is dim ! f hiu'ing on with a light never ending ! Glory that never shall fade, Never, Oh ! never away. Oh 1 it is sweet for our country te die, How softly reposes The warrior youth on his bier ; Wot by the tears of hi. love Wet by a mother's warm tear, They crown him with garlands of roses, Weep and then joyously turn Bright where he triumphs above J Not in Klysian fields , By stiltobllvipn's river ; Not in the isls of the blest Over the blue rolling sea ; But on Olympian hights Shall dwell the devoted forever. There shall assemble the good There tho wise, valiant and free. Oh ! theil, how great for our country to die J In the front rank to perish, Firm with our statutes shall crown, In songs our memory cherish : We shall look from our heaved Pleased the sweet music to hear.
