Vol's, Carrion Crow Bayou, Nov. 3, 1S63 Editors Journal : Once arain the Old Sixtieth has been baptized in blood, and I hasten to jot down a few of the principal incidents, that tlse home folks may know what we are doing. We came in from Bayou Courtableau to a small prairie called Buffalo Creek, and camped, on the 1st of November, 3ome eighteen miles on our homeward route, the expedition we had started on having been ordered back toward New Orleans. Our brigade, (the 1st of the 4th Division of the 13th Army Corps,) being the rear guard of the whole armyon Monday we were aroused by the cry of "Rebels are coming! at about 9 A. M. We fell in, and went out to meet them. At 11 A. M. the cavalry were driven back, and the 60th, support ing two pieces of a masked battery, ad vanced. We ambushed ourselves, and the battery opened on them. They were afraid of some Yankee trick, however, and did not charge the battery, as we expected. We then drove them some half a mile and lost sight of them. We remained until 4 P. M., when, seeing nothing more of them, we returned to missing. NEWS SUMMARY. BY TELEGRAPH. Noon Report. Our morning report failed entirely yesterday morning By the noon report we are informed tha Gillmore's shells reached the heart of Charleston, killing several persons and firing several buildings. Last Night's Dispatches. In conse. qnence of some derangement in the Telegraph lines last night, our report camp. On the next morning, (Tuesday,) at 9 A M . the Ions roll again rallied us to our places, and the regiment took a po sition on the right of the brigade. A few moments satisfied us that the force was not worth noticing, and we put back to camp. Scarcely had we broken ranks when the pickets opened a strong fire on the right of our line. Again we fell in. It was then about halt past 11 A. M, We moved rapidly to the rear and right of our camp, a distauce of half a mile, a-id in les3 time than I can write it, (Companies A and B having been thrown in advance as skirmishers,) we were very hotly errgaged with the rebels in over powering numbers. They advanced in a column of regiments " closed in mass," throwing the whole weight of the attack on our regiment, numbering about 150 righting men. Col. Owen, who com mands our brigade, moved two regiments to support us, and cheered us on gal lantly, seeming not to care for the storm of bullets that rained around ns all. The rebels were too many for ns, how- over, and having held our position for oer half an hour against overwhelming odds, our regiment slowly fell back, which prevented the supports from torm ing properly, and they soon gave way. We were left to ourselves again, and kept falling back slowly through the woods for about half a mile, fighting man to man, and from tree to tree, tak ing advantage of every obstacle that pre sented itself to protect ourselves from the hail storm of bullets, which was worse than we ever met with at Vicksburg, Jackson or Arkansas Post The other regiments of our brigade shared our fate, and when we reached the prairie in rear of the wood we fought through, we saw the 3d Division of our Corps coming to our assistance, the old 11th and 24 th Indiana in the vanguard. With a cheer that made the welkin ring again, our whole brigade rallied once more, formed rapidly as one regiment, and a small nne at that Led on bv Gen. Burbridge, the Division commander, and Col. Owen, they charged on the bels again, and with the assistance of the veteran 3d Division, drove them through the woods over the battle field, and for a mile and a Johnson, Julius Patmore, Israel r"rice, Autoine Salmen, Jas. The meanest reb els who figured in the invasion last year, were those who hal been (treated most leniently. Rebels have loin permitted to return, who aided in tearing the stars and stripes from our State Capital, and tramDled the flasin the dust; and who, when here, were the most violent and vindictive. Union men can't afford to leave their homes, wben such men are left behind to do mischief. This indis criminate return of rebels should be stopped. "That's what's the matter" and it is a grievous wrong that should be early remedied. MeDhose souls are steeped with treason and whose hands are dyed with the blood of loyal citizens, are permitted to return home, as soon as tired of the war, settle down in a loyal community, ready to take advantage of any opportunity to commit outrages upon their neighbors. Sooner than we Anticipated. We made the remark to a prominent Demo crat the morning after the October elec tion, that the time was fast approaching when politicians who had sighed for and prayed for Vallandigham's election, would be making affidavits that tney were always opposed to him, and never approved of his election. While we were confident such would be the case, our prediction has been verified sooner than we anticipated. We expect to see a large number of affidavits like the following before the next election, and we hereby give notice to Democrats who contem plate "swearing" on the subject, that we will insert their affidavits with great pleasure, at our usual advertising rates: 'Slate of Ohio. I appeal to the men of Indiana, who, from age or other causes, are unable to volunteer, to come forward at this hour to the help of the country. If each man will attempt to procure one recruit for the army, many will succeed, the ranks can be filled and the State saved Mr. Clement L. Yallandigham, the martyr, who came within a hundred thous and uotes of being unanimously elected Governor of Ohio, is at Windsor, Canada, in an alarming state of impecuniosity. The journal from which we obtain this interesting piece of " personal " intelli gence very bluntly and indecorously ob serves, without the slighest regard to his sensibilities, that he "is out of funds, and adds that his landlord is "solicitous," If Mr. Yallandigham has any self-respect he will take an early opyortunity to snub " the landlord." Morton, Governor of Indiana. The Rebel Officers on Johnson's Island Reduced to Their Rations. It will be gratifying to the people to learn that the sale of delicacies and luxuries to the rebel prisoners has been stopped. Hitherto nothing has been too good for them. The markets of Sandusky have been stripped of delicacies to supply their demands, and one fellow had actu ally prepared to open a saloon in the rebel s quarters for the sale of game, oysters, etc., which he had engaged to ouppicu mm, arju wnicn the grey backs were enabled to buy with the funds raised in response to their beggino letters, which were sent far and "near The rebels sent letters to every person with whom they could establish the shad ow of an acquaintance, and invariably ended by begging money. One letter is a sample of the lot. A young lady in Utica, New Ydrk, who had been teach ing school in Alahamn - ' - . J - , , a iCLttr lrom a rebel prisoner who had seen her in the South, reminding her of the fact, and begging for money, saying he was ragged and starving. With the money raised by such means the rascals have been living in clover. Game of all kinds has been bought to such an extent for the rebels that the citizens of San dusky complain that they cannot get any for their own tables. One lot of twenty boxes of wine went up a few davs since from a prominent Cleveland firm, bound for the island.
