Major Brown is a very popular speak er, and as he has just arrived from the "Front," bis "experiences" will, no doubt, be found very interesting. We hope the people will turn out en matte to welcome the gallant Major. A Strong Peace Petition We are informed that a man came to this city a few days ago, bearing a petition address ed to the President of the United States, and purporting to be signed by the Lord God and Jesus Christ, asking the Presi dent to stop the war and promote peace. He sought and obtained a pass from cer tain gentlemen in this city, permitting him to go when he pleased as far as Washington City, but the railroad com pany refusing his pass, he disappeared for a few days, when he returned, with money sufficient to take him to Wash ington City and back. From the well known character of the signers of the petition, unless they are forgeries, it is very evident it is not a Butternut Demo cratic petition. In Camp. Col. Crooks has ordered the Spencer County Home Guards into camp for three days. Eight companies will camp at Grand View, on the the 8th, 9th, and 10th of this month, and thirteen companies will rendezvous at Rockport, on the 14th, 15th and;l6th insts. The Colonel appears to have two objects in view in this arrangement: one, that he may perfect hia regiment in all that per tains to military life; and tho other, the uv-vutiMg j i luiiuiiucia jur nits uuilrU States army. We trust that both ob jects will be fully accomplished. BThc Vincennes Sun, with its usu al patriotism, apologizes for the infernal barbarity with which our prisoners in Richmond are treated by its friends. It publishes, without comment, the excuse of the Richmond papers for starv ing our prisoners, which everybody knows is false. "Our neighboring cities are hold ing meetings and raising means to pro vide for the poor this winter. Vincen is as yet doing nothing in that way. Vincennes Sun. They could not be expected to under the teachings of the Sun. We are indebted to the courteous officers of the Commercial for late Mem phis papers. Mr. O'Bannon, the affable and polite clerk of the Big Grey Eagle, has our thanks for Cincinnati, Louisville and New Albany papers, in advance of the mail. Sudden Death.- -We are deeply pain ed to learn that a child of Mr. Robert Early, Deputy Sheriff, died very suddenly of croup, last evening. The bereaved parents will have the earnest sympathy of all who have experienced such a be reavement. Another tender flower has been thus transplanted from this cold world to the paradise of God. The Tableaux. Those interested in the Tableaux to be presented had anoth er rehearsal last night, and we have no hesitation in saying the entertainment to night will be the most interesting and amusing ever witnessed in this city. There-is a wondrous amount of native talent enlisted in the affair, and those who remain away to-night will never cease regretting it Go early to secure eligible seats, as there will unquestionably be a "jamb." Anothir Soul Sated. Senator Lan drum, of the Kentucky Legislature, who was captured with Hon. Lucian Ander son, had always been a conservative gen tleman; but the guerrillas treated him even rougher than they did Andersen, who had always been radical. As they were returning in their buggy, after be ing released, Land rum remarked to An derson, " You have always been radical, I have been conservative, and made con servative speeches. But these rebels ami thieves treated you with even more consideration than they did me, and from this jay forth I am with you." We learn that Landrum will favor the emancipation of the slaves in Kentueky. 8STColonel Gorman, commandant 1st district, called upon us last evening. He informs us that the work of erecting barracks at Vincennes is progressing as rapidly as possible, and that they will be ready within ten days to receive com panies. The Colonel is desirous of re ceiving reports from recruiting officers throughout the district as rapidly as possible. His headquarters are perma. tautly located at Vincennes. From New Orleaxs We are indebt- ed to our valued old friend, Capt. P. G. I O'Reiley, for New Orleans papers of the ' 23d ult We are glad to learn tbat our i late fellow citizen, Capt O'Reiley, ar j rived safely at New Orleans, and readily secured an eligible location on the cor- ner of Paydras street and tho levee, and is in fine spirits and excellent heahh. ! It was not then believed that Meade would attack Lee before tc-dav, ana it is considered possible that no bat tie would be fought. As the array on j carnea rations tor a very bnet campaigi , it will have to fight soon or fall back for fresh supplies. It is possible that Meade, when he has finished the work he has undertaken, will fall back upon Fred ricksburg, though nothing is known on mat point at 1 o clock this evening, Ihe Government has received nothing irom tne Kapidan, and nothing is known in otncial circles.
