THE FIB Or THS Evansville Journal Company. r J Journal Hililtlinrs. LOCUST STREET, BETWEEN FIRST AND WATER. FKIUAT. .DECEMBER 4 Washington Letters. Washington City, Nov. 26, 1863. Editors Dily Journal To-day, the day appointed? the Pres- ident as a day of National thanksciring , , f , u prayer, was generally ODserveu nere, and the city wears an air of Sunday ap" pearance. As a fitting incident to the oecasion, and asagreater incentive to ex cite deeper emotions of thanksgiving and praise, the news of Grant's victory at Chattanooga was received this morning. A retrospective glance at the pa3t can not fail to ex?ito emotion? of the roost profound 'ratitude io that all-wise Ruler of the universe, who, while chastising us as a Nation for our perverseness, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. Wis" dom has been vouchsafed to our rulers ; victory has crowned our armies and navy; fruitful harvests havs rewarded our far mers; health has abided with us; foreign jealouses and designs "have failed to dis turb our harmonious relations of friend ship with foreign powers. Surely we, as a nation, ought to exclaim with a united voice, "give thanks untothe Lord." Let us not, in the enthusiasm of our joy, fail to remember that these manifold blessings are attended- with tremendous responsibilities. Let us write upon our door posts, " Rightousness exalteth a Nation, but sin is a reproach to any peo ple." This terrible scourge yf civil war has not been without its attendant nation al benefits. The good Lord has not bap tized our people id blood, in vain ! Amer ica, ever dear to the true lover of liberty, is infinitely more so, now that thousands of her honored brave have consecrated the soil afresh, to freedom and free insti tutions. That great blot upon our escatcheon human slavery is wiped out in the blood of martyrs, and no longer subjects us as a people, to the taunts and sneers of the civilized world. Let us not forget, either, the mother and the orphan, made so, by the wicked and causeless rebellion. To them, in their sorrowful pilgrimage through life, let us" ever extendi the help ing hand, remembering that we enjoy the precious heritage of free institutions, only through the blood of their husbands and fathers. The aggregate Union majorities in the recent State elections, amount to 431, 0)0! Deduct 10,000 butternut majority in New Jersey, and we still leave 421, 000 Union majority. Certainly this grand result is a terrible rebuke to cop perheadism. The record is made up, the seal is placed upon these insidious Brders of treason in our midst, and a mark more enduring than that of Cam, will follow such creatures as .Vallandig ham. Wood, Seymour, and their follow ers, to the grave. Yonr correspondent's predictions as to a speedy termination of the war. seems to be hastening to fulfillment, lie certainly fails to read aright in the signs of the times any thing else than speedy victory. The area of the rebellion is being daily more and more circumscribed, and soon we may look for peace permanent peace. The Hon. Schuyler. Colfax is in the city and is stopping at the National. There remains scarcely a doubt of his election to the Speakership. Indeed, un- i .i i ' n . i ui icss uiu Hieuiucrs m congress entirely disregard the wishes of their constitu ents, he cannot fail of election on the first ballot. The President did wrong in ignoring his claims to a seat in "1 the Cabinet, and this tardy act of justice as a reward for his unswerving devo tion to the truth will certainly be ac corded him. 'As Speaker, he unquestion ably would be the right man in the right place. The recent triumph of the Radicals in Missouri, is a terrible blow to Messrs. Blair and Bates. The President has too long listened to these gentlemen, and in mcrw instances than one has tailed to adopt the right course in Missouri. That State tojll be free, and Gov. Gamble's tender care of slavery cannot extend its life. Since the abolition of slavery in the District of Columbia, new life and vigor seems to be infused into the inhabitants. Improvements of all kinds are going on, street railroads hive supplanted the ob solete ha.'k, and the Washington of to day is scarcely recognizable to the visitor of ten years ago. It is rumored that Chief Justice Taney will resign, and that Secretary Chase will succeed him. The country could scarcely spare Mr. Chase from the posi tion he has so ably filled. The name of Salmon P. Chase wil go down to history as the ablest financier of the age, and a grateful people will not fail to reward bis labors. Mr. Chase is frequently urged as Mr. Lincoln's successor, but Presiden tial speculations, just at this time, are premature. Occident. D.VXGEROUS CotTXTERFEIT LOOK OfJT ! We were showa this morning, bj Mr. A. J. Gerstner, who keeps a clothing store on East Washington street, nearly opposite Little's Hotel, a counterfeit twenty dollar green back, which is well enough executed to deceive those who are not in the habit of closely scrutiniz ing money. It was presente i to him en Saturday by a young man who purchas ed one dollar and twenty-five cents worth of goods, and got the balance of the twenty dollars in change. The general appearance of the bill is good, though in that it may be easily detected. The sig- natures are good imitations, though the ink is paler than the genuine. The shading generally is imperfect, the lines course and heavy. The vignette is rather shabby, the robe, face and hair being lit tle better than the work of a pen or crayon pencil. The engravings on the back is also very coarse and blurred. The p-iiace arc on the srack of the counterfeit er,',but it willjbe well for every one to keep a look out. Ind. Gazette. A letter from Chattanooga says hundreds of deserters from Bragg's army are coming into our lines. In one night thirty-six, from different parts of the rebel lines, found their way through to curs. There was one North Carolina conscript among them, who said that the late conscription in his State had raked up every man who could carry a musket, and that, without a single exception, they were friends of the Union. He said that whole companies of them, officers and all, declare openly that they would desert at the first opportunity. EVANSVILLE, IND., FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4. 186a A Sad Pjctcrb. The New Albany Ledger draws the following dark picture of Indianapolis: Murders, assassinations, slung shot assaults, robberies, burglaries, thieving, pocket picking, sprinkled with some ar son, are the regular amusements now of n.'gnU in Indianapolis, it is not posi- tively salubrious for a gentleman who has a postage stamp in his pocket or elsewhere about his person, to appear individually by himself alone upon any j of the streets, under the moon, under the ' 1 stars, and especially and particularly under the cloud3. The chances are a , thousand to a million that he will reach home and embrace, with a sore head his i virtuous wife, and recount to her a sor- I rowful tale of how he has been abused. A sad, wicked world is this, and Indian- i I apolis seems to be the Gog and Magi s ' nf vM-. 'nntj Col. Makkland. The Louisville Jour nal of Wednesday says: This able and efficient officer, known in all our southwestern country as a spe cial agent of the Postofficc Department, has gone toward the front, where, if we are rightly informed, his services aro sadly needed to set free the accumulated mail matter at Nashville and other points, and speed it forward to its destination in the camps of our gallant soldiers. Col. Markland is the man for such services and for all others that his country may require of him. We do not doudt that in an incredibly short time ho will right everythipg that ia wrong in the post.-! arrangement ot the southern region c this Department Col. Markland's sei vices to our cause hava been and are in valuable. Intelligent, practical, sensi ble, energetic, resolute and. faithful, h hasdeserved well of hfs country and f hisState. And we rejoice ta know thnt he is gratefully recognized by the author ities of both. A Wonderful Salvk. A paragraph has been going the rounds of the press in which an account is given of a horse having a new hoof grown on by the use of a certain farrier's ointment Now this reminds us of an incident that hap pened in Lyons, Wisconsin. A Mormon priest named Nichols professed a power of doing miraculous things and com pounding wonderful medicines. He made a nerve and bono all-healing aalve, and thought he would experiment a little with it He first cut off his dog's tail and applied some of the salve to the slump. A new tail grew out immediate ly. He then appli'edBome to the piece of tail which he had cnt off, and a new dog' crew out. He didn't know which dog was which. This may seem a tough story, but we have Nichols' word for it, and we don't think he would lie. Kews Items.
