G. Brown, of the 65th I ndiana Mounted Infantry, who has just arrived from Knosville, will address the citizens of the 1st Con gressional District at the following times and placos: Washington, Friday, Dec. 4th. Petersburg, Saturday, Dec. 5th. Huntingbarg, Monday, Dec. 7th. Elizabeth, (Spencer co.,) Tuesday, 8th. Boonville, Thursday, Dee, 10th. Mt. Vernon, Saturday, Dee. 12th. The speaking will be at 7 o'clock p. m., with the exception of BoonviHe and Mt Vernon, at which places the hour will be 1 o'clock p. m. Major Brown is a very popular speak er, and as he has just arrived from the "Front," his "experiences" will, no doubt, be found very interesting. We hope the people will turn out en matte to welcome the gallant Major. 'We are indebted to the attentive clerks of the Liberty No. 2 for files of Memphis papers of the 30th ult., for warded from Cairo by the fast Adams Express. The Memphis Journal has changed owners and editors. From the salutatory of the new editor, J. S. Clark, we should infer that he was a Confeder ate Democrat. He talks about the liberty of the press being circumscribed, just as if the liber ty of the press ever existed in Memphis until now. asSe?" The steamer Kenton arrived here Wednesday night with sick and wounded Indiana soldiers aboard, under the charge of Dr. Bill of the army. Much praise is awarded Capt. Dnnlap for gen. erous treatment of the boys on the trip. The sick and wounded were accommoda ted In the hospitals here. - j - ttT Look at S. E. Gilbert's advertise ment of real estate, to be seld at auction on the 15th inst. This is a good chance to get good lots. A Change. J. B. Maynard, late edi tor of the Cannelton Reporter, has dried up his paper and assumed the du ties of '' local " of the Louisville Demo crat. Maynard will feel more at home in Louisville, as lemons were exceeding ly scarce in Cannelton. J. R is sensi ble, it is a long remove towards old Bourbon- county. Wo hope he will have a good time of it and fat rations. Ska? Maj. Gen. John A. Logan passed through Louisville a few days siuce from Vicksburg, accompanied by his staff, en route to Chattanooga. He will take com. mand of the Fifteenth Army Corps, in Gen. Sherman's army. . We have premonitory symptoms that Campbell s Minstrels are coming this way soon. We shall not he surpris el any morning to see their. big bills on the walls and fences, versiant. Literary and Debating Association. A friend sends us a note calling our at tention to the want of some literary as sociation in this city, for the amusement and cultivation of the young men of the city, during the long winter evenings. We fully agree with our correspondent that such an organization would be of incalculable advantage, not only to the young men of the city, but to our citizens in general. If the attention and interest of the young men were properly enlisted in this enterprise, it would give them occupation of a profitable character for the time that is now wasted in vain and fri. lous par- . suits, or in scenes of disipation, to which they may be tempted to resort for amuse ment We have an excellent library and reading room, now in successful orpera tion, and an association of the character of the one we have suggested would be a most valuable addition to these. We hope to see early steps taken to organize such an association. Let the young men take hold of the matter at once. A Row. There was a right smart sprinkling of a row on tha corner of Fourth and Main streets, late on Wed nesday night Officers Tenneforde and Gates interfered, and quieted matters. Tenneiorde took a pistol from one fast young gentleman of this city, whose name we withhold fcr the present, and whom we hope, fo, the credit of his friends, will never again be found in such company. AST" A gentleman was relieved of a watch in a bowling saloon of Wednes day night It has not been recovered. Our town is not yet free of rogues, and . is not likely to be soon. We were gratiBed last night to meet our good friends Capt Ed. and Lieut Dare White, of the White 6rm of Green River. Ther were fresh from Canada, but saw nothing of John Morgan. They are in magnificent health. Game, Poultry and Vrkisox. Oar enterprising friend Frank Felker, corner of Main and Third streets, is a public benefactor, supplying the community as he does with vast quantities of Turkies, Quails, Venison, and Game of all kinds at moderate prices. His stock gives out, and his store is never of customers. Call and see him. never empty Geo. The Catholic Telegraph relates the fol lowing : A young American Democrat went re cently to Rome to study for the priest hood in the Propaganda. He began his first letter from the Eternal City as fol lows: "The first thing which forcibly attracted my attention here, was the dis covery that t'ie i rofi ct of the class in which I am place 1 is a nigger I ' What a dreadful thing ! A young American not only compelled to asso ciate with a negro, but to acknowledge him at the head of his diss. What will become of the Church ? Raid ok Mount Sterling Destruction- ok Property. We learn by private dispatch from Mount Sterling, that a band of guerrillas, numbering about two hundred, supposed to be the command of the notorious John T. Williams, en tered that town about 3 o'clock on Wed nesday morning. They burned the Court ilouse, and stole all the horses they could find, including all the stage horses of Messrs. Irvin & Wolverton, and a large number of Government horses. Their stay in the town was very short, and no other damage was done. It is not known what direction they took when they left. Louisville Journal. StF tG&- Charles W. Hall, lately convicted by a court-martial for fraud in the sale of horses to the Government, and sen tenced to pay a fine of $10,000 and to six mohths' imprisonment, is now in In dianapolis. His friends claim that the fine has been remitted, and the sentence of imprisonment will not be enforced. New Albany Ledger. It is a little remarkable, and not very, either, that Hall's friends are confederate and conservative Democrats, and it is natural they should think him a clever fellow after having been convicted of stealing from the Government Everybody buys clothing at Ly on's. His stock is large and varied, and comprises such elegant styles, that a gentleman can procure a fine outfit with out leaving his measure and waiting for it. ttkV' It is not) often that we come in contact with an article that we feel justified in recommending to our numer ous readers, but the article of Family Dye .Colors manufactured by Howe & Stevens, advertised in this day's paper, we feel we can heartily commend to a 1 who may have use for dyes of any colors For sale by all druggists.
