The river here is gradually declining,
and the same state of things exists hence
to Cincinnati and Pittsburg. The lower
end of the Ohio is rising, from the influ
ence of the Cumberland and Tennessee.
The Mississippi and all its upper trib
utaries are falling, and navigation above
St. Louis is in a measure suspended.
The arrivals and departures during the
past two days have been rather numer
ous, and large shipments' have betn
made.
The "Bowcn took out a handsome trip
on Saturday afternoon, and was crowded
with people, as usual.
The musical Glendale passed down on
Saturday morning, with a splendid trip.
The gorgeous Big Grey Eagle entered
her appearance about 4 o'clock, with a
crowd of passengers and a nice freight
list The Eagle and her accomplished
officers grow in popularity from day to
day.
The popular Commercial went down
on Saturday evening, and though inad
vertently unanaounced, added consider
ably to her trip here.
The Cordelia Ann was about loaded,
with a handsome trip for Cincinnati, on
Saturday evening, and probably got off
that night.
The Emma got off Saturday night,"
with a monster load of corn for Nash
ville. Her capacity for freight and pas
sengers is immense.
The grand and elaborate Armada will
be the regular packet for Cairo at noon
to-day. She is fleet as a reindeer, and
handsome as a picture. Her tables groan
beneath the most sumptuous dinners, and
her chtet othcers, Lapt. Josh. V. lhroop
and Col. Fred. Huston, render the at
mosphere genial as a May morning with
their smiles and courtesies. The Armada
should go out crowded.
Our enterprising friends, Cox & Hum
phrey, finding their business too exten
sive for their room, have purchased a
new wharf boat, which was landed at our
wharf on Saturday morning. We are
glad to witness their prosperity.
The new and elegant steamer Taras
con will be here this morning from Hen
derson for Louisville, for which port she
will leave at noon.
She was built expressly for this trade,
and is really a magnificent packet. She
is commanded by that prince of river
men, Capt. Joe Bunee, with Mr. Geo. A.
Williams is chief clerk, and two more
accomplished gentlemen never walked
the deck of a steamer.
With such a magnificent steamer, they
cannot fail to reap new laurels. We
will give a detailed description of the,
Tarascon to-morrow.
The little Grey Eagle, we learn, is
making up a trip for Nashville. We
shall miss the little Eagle and her geni
al and courteous officers, Capt. Ballard
and Frank Banksmith, but hope they
may continue to prosper. They can't
fail to be popular.
The Louisville Journal of Saturday,
says i
The river is falling, and has receded
3 inches during the last 24 hours. There
was 5 feet 2 inches water in the canal
last evening by the mark. Weather
mild.
The Cairo dry-dock was taken over the
falls yesterday by Capt. P. Varble. The
dock was b lilt at Cincinnati, and was in
charge of Capt Folio.
The Cincinnati Commercial of Friday
says :
Messrs. Ketchum and Adam Calhoun,
engineers of the Nellie Moore, recently
sunk near Cumberland Dam, arrived
here yesterday. They report the water
on the wreck np to the boiler deck for
ward, and over the engines aft. They
fear she can not be raised. Her cabin
furniture, doors, skylights, etc., had been
stored in the wharf-boat at Smitliland,
for shipment to Cincinnati.
The Havana arrived at Nashville yes
terday. Her officers telegraph us that
the river is clear of rebels, and that she
will leave Nashvile for Cincinnati to-morrow.
The Missouri Democrat of Saturday
says:
The river fell four iuches in the 24
hours ending at 9 o'clock yesterday
morning. This is a considerable fall,
comparatively considered, but at other
points the decline is no less rapid.
From this point to Cairo there is five
feet scant Boats drawing five feet rub
hard. Below Cairo there is plenty of
water,
To Quincy faom the mouth of the Illi
nois there is now only 3$ feet Above
Quincy the report is 32 inches.
The Illinois is also falling fast, and
has but ome 30 inches in the channel.
The Missouri is bridged over with ice,
and closed from mouth to source.
The weather is vey warm for the sea
son. Navigation is uninterupted to
Quincy, on the Upper Mississippi, to Na
ples, on the Illinois, and perhaps to Peo-
