A STORY FOR LITTLE FOLKS.
u There is one of my glove buttons
gone, " said sister Kate, as she was pre
paring to go out " How provoking it
is! A glove looks so untidy unfastened."
"Just wait a minute sister, " said An
nie, I believe I have some glove-buttons
in my box, and pouring the contents
in her apron soon'found the required ar
ticle. Her handy little needle and silk
quickly sewed it on, and she was well
repaid by a kiss from her sister, and a
hearty, " Thank you, Annie dear; your
little cabinet of curiosities is a perfect
gold mine. You can always find the
right thing there," and she tripped down
the 8tep3 quite satisfied that all was
right.
" How long have you had that box
cousin Annie," asked Ned, who was
spending a week at thejhouse.
" Ever since she can remember, I
guess," said her mother, laughing. "She
always was a careful little thing, from
the time she could toddle about the floor.
She used to make little collections of
buttons and tamarind stones, and I do
not know what all, when she was four
and five years old. It is a good habit
though, and I am sure we are all indebt
ed to her every day of our lives. It
would be a curiosity to keep an account,
some day, of the calls she has."
"I think I will do it." said Ned.
" Where can I find a paper and pencil ?"
Annie opened her little box again, and
took out the half of an old envelope she
had saved, cutting off the torn side, and
a little piece of pencil some one had
swept out doors.
"You can set down three things, to
begin with," she said, laughing " a
glove button, piece of paper and a pen
Just then little Martha came running
in, the string off her bonnet, and she in
" such a hurry."
" Bun to Annie, said her mother, who
was busy making mince-pies.
Up went the box-lid, and this time a
little bag, containing all sorts of odds
and ends of strings and ribbons, was
overhauled. The right thing was sure
to be there, and taking a threaded need
le, it was sewed on in a minute's time,
and Mattie was dancing off to her play.
"Number four," said Ned, just as
father came in and asked Annie if she
could find him a good strong tow
string." He wanted to mend his harness
enough to drive to the harness-maker's
and have it repaired. Another little bag
was produced, which contained jastwhat
was wanting, and with a " Thank you,
daughter, you are a treasure and so is
your box," he went his way.
"Just take your work, and don't stir
from that corner to-day," said Ned,
' you'll be wanted. You might set up a
store. If they all had as many custom
ers these hard times, they would thrive.
Well, Tommy, what can we do for you?"
Tommy did not deign to glance at his
cousin, but went straight to Annie.
" 1 have lost my mitten, sister, and I
cant make a snow man without it Can't
I have another?"
"Now I guess you are at a stand, An
nie," said Ned ; " Your resources will
fail for once."
Annie smiled and said to Tommy, " If
sister will give you another mitten, will
you go out and look hard for the lost
one V
The little fellow promised, and was
bid go and warm his feet by the fire a
little while. Annie took out a paper pat
tern and a bit of thick cloth, which was
quickly cut into a mitten shape and sewed
np, all in fifteen minute's time. Ned
looked on, dumb with admiration, and
secretly resolved to learn a lesson.
Who else would like to set up such a
savings-box ? It is very easy and very
delightful, and what is more, will be very
useful, not only to yourself, but to those
around you. It will help, too, to form a
good habit, which will be of lifelong ad
vantage to you. Chronicle.

The river is falling at this point quite
rapidly, and the gray backs in front of
the city are looming up quite prominenly
and making a great show and but for
the strong indications of rain, river men
would again be filled with apprehensions
and gloom.
The upper portion of the river is now
at a staud with less than 5 feet at Pitts
burg, and about 10J at Cincinnati.
The arrivals and departures for the
last two days have been quite large, and
busines on tho landing has been rather
brisk.
The D. R Campbell will load here for
Bowling Green, and will leave about
Friday.
The great feature of the last two days,
and the great attraction has been the ar
rival and departure of the new and ele
gant packet steamer Tarascon, of the
Louisville and Henderson mail line,
Expectation was on a tiptoe all day
Sunday, and from noon till after night
Front Street was crowded with citizens
anxious'to'see this new candidate for pub
lic favor.-
The grand ovation with which she met
all along shore, detained her until after
dark, and much disappointment was the
result
We doubt if a handsomer or more ele
gant steamer has appeared in these wa
ters for many a day, or one destined to
become more popular with the river pub
lic. Wiih great symetry, and an elegant
model, she has the most powerful and
complete machinery, and possesses all
the requisites necessary for great speed.
Her length on deck is 257 feet, breadth
of beam 36 feet, depth of hold 5j feet
Her machinery is first-class throughout
She has two cylinders 22J inches in di
ameter, with 7J feet stroke. Her wheels
are 30 feet in diameter, with 11 feet
buckets. The machinery is of the most
compact and substantial quality, and is
highly creditable to the builder, Dennis
Lonr, of Louisville. The hull of the
Tarascon was built by D. & J. Howard,
of Jeffersonville, and the elegance of her
model sras never excelled.
The cabin af the Tarascon is the very
perfection of neatness and elegance,
without any gaudtness or tinselry, it ig
handsome in design and of the mos
workmanlike finish, in pure Parian
white, except her office and social-hall,
which are finished with the most admira
ble graining we ever saw oak and bird's
eye maple.
The state-rooms are spacious and well
ventillated, the bedding and furniture of
the finest quality.
The cabin furniture is of the most
splendid Btyle, and with the magnificent
carpets, from the celebrated house of
Stewart & Co., of New York City, and
her massive chandaliers, which, by the
way, manifest as yet but half their con
templated elegance, give to the cabin an
air of neatness and splendor we have
never seen surpassed.
The carpets are of the very best fab
rics, and exceedingly rich and elegant in
the blending of colors.
The fine French mirrors constitute a
handsome feature of the furnishing of
the Tarascon, and are of the most splen
did style and finish.
In a word, from keel to pilot house
every part of the boat is an absolute
model, substantial, neat and elegant
throughout Her pilot, honse is a very
model of comfort, neatness, good taste
and convenience, and is hadsomely orna
mented by her chief pilot, Mr. Henry
Warring.
Her office is roomy and exceedingly
elegant, and manifests the accurate
taste of her chief clerk, Mr. Geo. A.
Williams, who superintended its orna
mentation. The Tarascon was built under the im
mediate direction and superintendance
of Capt Bunce, and is a proud monu-

manders. Mr. George A. Williams is
chief clerk of the boat. Had tbe Com
pany sought the whole country over for
a first-class clerk, they could have found
no better man than Mr. Williams.
His friends are counted by thousands

I one of the greatest favorites on the Lov
er Ohio, with both shippers and travel
ers. The Tarascon, under her present offi
cers, cannot fail to have a splendid ca
reer, and we hail her advent as one of
the bright epochs in steamboat history.
May her race be as prosperous as the
auspices of her advent are bright and
happy.
The Grand Armada arrived from Cairo
early on Sunday morning, with a moder
ate freight list, but full of people. She
left Saturday afternoon, full of freight
and passengers.
The D. B. Campbell arrived from
Nashville yesterday evening. Capt Kea
informs us that there is nine feet water
on Harpeth Shoals, and falling.
The favorite Green River packet, R.
K. Dunkerson, passed up on Sunday in
company with the J. T. McCombs, bound
to Louisville from Nashville.
The two boats made a dash on the
way to test their speed, in which the ele
gant little Dunkerson won fresh laurels
for herself and for our excellent young
townsman and friend, whose name she
bears so proudlv. We were delighted to
ksee Capt Drinkwater, her gallant com
mander, in such elegant health, and in
such a flow of spirit
