ssms fVnr . a, mr U - Ml. mm 4 A. THURSDAY. DECEMBER 10 JOURNAL BUILDINGS, LOCrsT STREET, BETWEEN FIBST AST WATER. A Smoky Cnimnej. A correspondent who live ia New Hampshire, states that ia thode parts re Bides a man called Joe, a fellow noted for the tough lies which he can tell, and as a sample relates the following: Joe called in at Holtou' one day, and found him almost choked with smoke, when he suggested " Yon don't know as much about managing amokr chim neys as I do, 'Squire, or youd cure 'em." ' Ah," said Holton, with interest, "did you ever see a'smoky chimney cnred?" "Seen a smokr chimney cured?" laid old Joe, 14 1 think I have! I had the worst one in Seaboard county once, and I cured it a little too much.'' " How" was that IT asked Holton. " Why, yon see," said Joe, "yon see I built a little house out yonder, at Wolf Hollow, ten or twelve jears ago. Jim Busb, the fellow that built the chimneys, kept blind drunk three quarters of the time, and crazy drunk the other. I told him I thought he d have something wrong, but he stuck to it and finished the house. . J " Well, we moved in, and built a fire the next morning, to boil the tea kettle. All the smoke came through the room and went out of the windows; not a bit went up the flues. We tried it for two ov three days, and it got worse and worse. By and by it camo on to rain, and the rain began to eome down the chimney. It put the fire out in a min ute, and directly it came dorn by the pailful. We had to get the baby off the floor as soon as we could, or it would have been drowned. "In fifteen minutes the water stood knee deep oa the floor. It didn't rain half so hard outside, and I pretty soon saw what was the matter. The drunken cuss bad pat the chimney wrong end up, and it drawed downwards; it gathered all the rain within a hundred yards, and poured it down by bucketfuls. " Well, that wa3 unfortunate, " re marked, " Holton. " But what in the world did you do with the house? Sure ly, you never cured that chimney?" "Didn't I though?" answered old Joe. " Yes, I did. " " How?" asked Holton. "Turned it the other end up," said the incorrigible, and then you ought to have seen it draw. That was the way 1 cured it too much. "Drew too much?" asked Holton. "Well, squire, you may judge for yourself, ' said old Joe. " Pretty soon after we got the chimney down the other end up, I missed one of the chairs out of the room, and directly I seen another of 'em shooting towards the fire-place. Next the table went, and I seen the back-log going up. Then I grabbed the I old woman under one arm and the baby under tother and started ; but just as I got lo the door, I seen the cat going across tha floor backwards, holding on with her claws to the carpet, yelling aw fully. It wasn't no use. I just seen her going over the top of the chimney, and that was the last of her. ' ' " Well, what did you do, then?" asked Holton. Of course you couldn't live in inch a house? " -pf'S rpr. " Couldti i I, though?" said Joe, "but I did, I put a poultice on the jam of the fire-place, and that drawed totber way, so we had no more trouble. " That is what we call hard lying. Beavib Dam, Ohio Count, Ky. dec'j -It NOTICE. THE SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY has not yet given notice of auy intention to withdraw this popular Loan from saleat par. and until ten days notice is given, the uudersigned, as General Subscription Agent," will continue to supply the public. The wliote amount of the loan authorized is five hundred millions of dollars. Nearly tour huunn J, millions have Been alreaiiy sui'scrilM-,' lor anil i n.l iuto tho Treasury, mostly within the last seven mouths. The large demand from nbroad, and the rapidly increasing homo demand for use as the basis for circulation by National Bauking Associ ations now organizing in all parts of the country, will, in averv short iterion, iib-toro tta? balance. Sales have lately ranged from ten to fifteen mil lions weekly, frequently exceeding three millions daily, and as it is well known that the Secretary of the Treasury has amplo and unfailing resources a the Duties on Imports aud Internal Kcvruti , and in the i sue of the interest bearing I cgal T n- der Treasury Notes, ft Is almost a certainty that he will not hnd it necessaiy, for a long time to come, to seek a market for any other long or per manent Loan, the interest and rrincipal ol bich are payable in GOLD. Prudence and self interest must force the minds of those contemplating tho formation of National nanaiuir Associations, nn wen as tao ntilios oi nil who have idle money ml their banHs, trr the ' prompt conclusion that they should lose no timo in subscribing to this most popular Loan. It will soon be beyond their reach, and advance to a handsome premium, as was the result with the Seven-Thirty " Loan, when it was all sold, and conld no longer he subscribed for at par It Is aiix per cent. Loau,th Interest nnd Prin cipal payable in COIN, thus yielding over nine per cent, per annum, at the present rate ol premium Tbe Government requires all duties on imports to be paid in coin; these duties have, for a long time past, amounted to ever a Quarter of a Bul lion of Dollars daily, a snm nearly three times greater than that required iu tbe payment of the interest on all the 5-20's and other permaneut Loans. So that it Is hoped that the surplus Coin in the Treasury, at no distant day, will enable the United Stat, s to resume specie payaieuts upon all iu liabilities. TT T f'T'lTIT' The Loan is called 5-20 from thefcrt that whilst the Bonds may run for twenty years, yet the Gov ernment hss a right to pay them off in Gold, at par, at any time after live years. The interest is paid half-yearly, viX: On the first days of November and May. Subscribers can have Coupon Bonds, which are payable to b,-ar,-r, and are $50, SI no, S.,oo, and jltiOO: or Registered Bonds in sa"Cj denomina tions, and ki addition S.i,008 and SlO.mir). For Banking purposes, anJ tor investments of Trust moneys, the Registered Bonds are preferable. These 5-20's cannot be, taxed by States, cities, towns, or counties, and the Government tax on them is only one and a-half per cent., on the amount of tnceme, wh"n ftie tncmwe of the bolder exceeds six hundred dollars per annntu ; ail other investments, such as Ulceus from mortgages, railroad stock and bonds, etc., must pay from 3 to 5 per cent, tax on the income. Banks and Bankers' throughout tho ronntry will continue to dispose of the Bonds ; and all or ders, by mail or otherwise, promptly attended to. The "inconvenience oT a few days' delay in the delivery of the Bonds is unavoidable, the demand being so great ; bat as interest commences from the day of subscription no loss is iswnsioned. and every effort is being made to diminish tho delay.
