Unity loutwal EVANSVILI" IND. THCK-DAY DECEMBER IT, 1863 CITY jVEWS. iSFor Commercial and River News ee fourth page. Winter. There was a heavy fall of snow in this region yesterday, extending as far North as we have heard from. The temperature was so high as to rea der the water almost snow as it fell, and a disagreeable slush covered every thing yesterday morning. Evergreen shrubbery suffered severely, and much of it is probably ruined and broken down. During the entire afternoon a heavy ar.d continuous rain fell, which ceased about dark. How they Rob a Indianapolis. On Sunday night a clothing merchant of In dianapolis took home with him from his store $2,500 which he deposited between his feather bed and mattress. In the night he was awakened by a man stand in,' over him with a bowie knife in one hand and the other between the beds grasping the money. The robber ordered the merchant to keep still or he would kill him, and hav ing no means of resistance, ba was thus robbed with impunity. The villain wore a mask, and consequently was not re cognized by the merchant. A SURPRISE AND A PlASCRE. Aa W6 were leaving our office late Tuesday night, we had the unexpected pleasure of meeting Generals Hovey and Harrow who had just arrived over land from Mt. Vernon, en route to join the array, the former having been ordered to report to Gen. Grant, and '.he latter to report at Washington City. Gen. Hovey, as stated in yesterday's issue, has been ordered to leave his hcrses and bagstage at Louis ville and report, with the least possible delay, to Gen. Grant The President has reconsidered his ac. ceptance of Gen. Harrow's resignation, ai.d he is again ordered to duty. He will probably also be given a com mand in the West. Both gentlemen are in excellent health, and anxious to do all in their power to aid in crushing out the rebellion. There is a good field among the Savannas of Georgia for the hero of Champion Hills and Port Gibson to win fresh laurels. They left for Louisville by railroad yes terday morning. Sq? Much has been said of late, " through the medium of the press, " about Christmas presents ! Think of Young America, launched upon a Christmas morning, with his pants inside of a pair of " red-top" boots, or his sis ter admiring the track of a pretty new Balmoral boot in the snow and then call on Turner & Gwathmey. Parker's Express. We direct the at tention of shippers, and business men generally, to the card of this new Express Company, whose agent, Mr. Buckner, is now in our city, to establish an agency. The Company does business exclusively by water, on the line of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, with its head office at St. Louis. Mr. Phy D. Veits has been appointed agent in this city, and a better selection could not have been made. His almost unlimited business acquaintance, his cor rect business habits, his energy and inde- fatigability as a working man, together with his fine social qualities, all conspire to render him unequaled for a position of this character, and his long, connec tion with river interests gives him supe rior facilities for patting goods forward with dispatch. t&T, Gov. Johnson and Hon. Horace Maynard left Xashville for Washington on Tuesday. Major-General F. P. Blair passed through Louisville yesterday en route to Washington to take his seat in the House of Representatives, of wnich he is a member. He is succeeded in command of the loth Army Corps by Major-Gener-al John A. Logan. Theatricals. Mr. C. B. Reynolds, of New York City, with a troupe of artists, en route for Paducah, to fill an engage ment, has been induced to 3top here for three nights, and will open at Mozart Hall to-night, with the popular plays of " Perfection," " The White Bogs of Ire Ian.1." and "Paddy Miles' Boy." Reynolds comes to this city well recooii. ?nded, and will no doubt add greatly t. the pleasure and amusement of the lovt-a of the drama during his short visit to isr citv. jfc3rR. Cowdex arrived in the city last night, and is stopping at the Washing ton House, where persons afllicied with a.icers may consult turn until Saturday. New York, Dec. 15 A letter from Portsmouth, Va., gives the following particulars: The rebel inhabitants were taken cora p'et dy by surprise. Elizabeth City will be made the base of important opera tions. A detachment of 55 men from the U. S. colored regiment has just returned, bringing in 20 wagon loads of contra bands that had sought the protection of Gen. Wild. Artillery and cavalry from Gen. Get ty's division, as well as a considerable na val force, have left to co-operate with Gen. Wild. Nashville, Dec. 15. There is a ru mor here that General Sheridan com manding a column in pursuit of Long street, encountered the rebel rear guard east of Knoxville and sustained a heavy repulse, in which Gen. Sheridan is said to have been badly wounded. The rumor is not generally credited at General Rosseau's headquarters, but is traced to several distinct sources. Un less corroborated by dispatches from Chattanooga of this date, the story may be discredited. Gen. Palmer has resigned the com mand of the 14th army corps, and had reached Bridgeport on his way home, when he received orders to return to Chattanooga, his resignation having been accepted. CoL Misener reports from Columbia that rebel . deserters and citizens are flocking to that post in great numbers, asking to be allowed to take the oath un der the President's amnesty proclama tion. Col. Misener says in regard to the numbers arriving that he has never seen the like. A few days ago, a Captain Perkins, of the 11th Tennessee cavalry, applied to Gen. Rousseau for permission to take the oath of allegiance under the Amnesty Proclamation. He says in a letter that the actual position of Tennessee is not understood or appreciated by Tennes seans in the rebel army, and that his eyes hare been opened only since his capture. The trial of Frank Gurly, the guerrilla who killed Gen. McCook, a year ago, is now being concluded. He will undoubt edly be hung. The River at Pittsburg. Pittsburg, Dec. 15. Tho river is at present in fine condition for coal boats, there being twelve feet in the channel at this point, and more than this from here oat The weather to-day was cloudy, stormy and cold, with an occasional spitting of snow. All of the coal tugs have already left for Cincinnati and Louisville, with large tows of coal, and in addition to this all the broadhorni have been passing down in a perfrct string all day. In regard to the amount of coal that has left here, it is impossible to state correctly, but it is variously estimated at from two to four millions of bushels. It is thought that from sixty to eighty pairs of "broad horns" will get out. Bank Mobbed. Boston, Dec. 15. The Maldan Bank was entered shortly before noon to day. A son of the President was the only person in the bank at the time. He was murdered and the bank robbed of all its contents. A. E. Converse is the Presi dent The murdered boy was about 17 years old.
