We have noticed a c , T , , Secretary of iho Interior, is classfd A. n ' , ; amon ;st the very Conservative members : r.i . ii.i. v t r i. i oftheCab-.net. Although Mr. Usher is a j ,. , i . TMMlHont inrl V tV.l noot Vti r.iman he wuu u . . ....... . i uiauoiuaU ut is not a " Conservative," according to the Prentice deSnition of the word. We are informed by a gentleman who is em ployed in the Interior Department that Mr. Usaer is in favor of the most thor ough and effective measures for putting down the rebellion, and for keeping it down afteVrrt is overthrown. He regards slavery as the cause of the rebellion, and favors a conrse calculated to render it incapable of fomenting any more trouble. We are indebted to JeHN A. Gka haw, Esq., of the Treasury Department, Washington, for public documents. Mr. Graham was formerly Canal Commis. sionerin this State, and lived in Warrick and Dubois counties. He was, for many yearji, clerk of the courts in Warrick couftty. When appointed clerk iu the Treasury Department he resided in Keo. kuk, Iowa. He is one of Mr. Chase's most valuable assistants, and a Union man on whom there, is no discount at The Festival. PREPARATIONS. For the last two days the ladies con nected with the Walnut Street Presbyte rian Church have been making prepara tiortS for their Fair and Festival, which opened last night with great eclat, and the most encouraging success. The spacious audience room was used and the preparations were in keeping with the well-known energy and liberal ity of the congregation that worships there, and the room, nnder the rich, mel" low light of the numerous chandalien, with its elegant ornamentation, its lofty ceiling, and elaborately-furnished tables, shone with almost orteutal splendor. THE ASSEMBLY. In consequence of the military ball at Masonic Hall, the crowd was not espe cially great, but still the large audience room of the church was well filled, and the assembly was a most pleasant one. Almost all the various denominations were represented, and a most excellent social goad feeling prevailed. All seem ed to enjoy themselves, and to endeavor to make the entertainment as pleasant as possible. THE TABLES. There were several tables, where arti cles of a multitudinous variety were of fered for sale. These were generally presided over by fair young divinities, whoso winning smiles were irresistible, and the young gentlemen, and the mid dle aged even, went in regardless of ex pense, and the sales were, we 6hould think, quite large. Tha.-WPi". tttUes were bounteously n HtiT ! nil . with. tk most tempting COTO - estib.es, and were presided over by la dies of more mature age, and thither flocked crouds of young gentlemen with blushing damsels on their arms, and a host of gentlemen of 45 or who wish they were, for all the difference it would make in their years and especially in view of the approaching draft, and oys" ters, and cellery and hot coffee, and ice cream and other delicacies, disappearing with magic celerity. Those who attend to-night, and the nnmber'wiH doubtless be large, should not fail to call early and often at the east end of the room, where they will find an abundance of good thiugs. dis pensed respectively" by the firms of Mc Ferson, Drew & Company on one hand, and Baker, Wells k Company on the other; THE PCLP1T. The magnificeut marble pulpit attract ed much attention and great admiration. It is composed of very handsome varie gateo! marble, neatly and chastely carved, and of very beautiful design. It wae oonstrncted-under the superin tendence of Mr. M. A. Lawrence, by whom, as we understand, it was present ed to the church, and does infinite credit to his good tas'ts and liberality. the orux. The great attractiou of the evening was the grand organ, the very finest perhaps, iu the west, which has just been set up anil put in tune by Mr. E. C. Le Droit, of Boston, a most skillful and ac complished rnnsfcian and organist, and withal a very sociable and pleasant gentleman. The organ was manufactured by Wm B. D. 8immonds & Co., ol Boston, whose reputation is world wide. As a piece of furniture the organ is magnificent. Made of Rosewood of the finest finish, of 11 feet front, 8 feet in depth and 15 f eet high, with 21 Stops and a double sett of keys with piano arrangement The great organ contains the following stops: open drapason, dulciana, clara belie, principal, 12th, 15th flute, mix ture, and trumpet. The swell organ contains the follow ing : open diapason, stop diapason, bass and treble, principal, piccalo, hautboy and bassoon, pedals, pedal and grate, pedal and swell, tremblent, pedal cheek and bellows signal. Its deep, mellow tones, under the mas terly touch of Mr. LeDrott, filled the au ditorium with the most delicious melody. This fine instrument cost about $1,800, and is a striking evidence of the high state of perfection to which human skill and ingenuity has attained in the 19th century. Onr talented young friend and fellow citizen, Capt C. W. Drew, will manage this elaborate instrument after its per fect inauguration and dedication. The entertainment will be repeated to- night, " with an entire change of pro - gramme," as the showman says, and we can assure those who were abseat last night, that they will be greatly the losers if they remain awav to-night. For some days past an unpleasant rumor has been cir culating among some of the little peo ple, to the effect that Old Santa Clau3 would not make his annual visit the coming Christmas on aceouut of tho war. The thunder'of canuon, the rattle of musketry, the shrieks and groans of the dyinir, it was thought, would so frighten his timid reindeers evenlif the fumes ot , , ,. , , . , t t owdor f moke didn t stifle them that it 1 , .... ,,, would be impossible far ".Old .ick to , ,. . . . make his usaal rounds. Many little - i round, merry faces grew long and sor : rowful as, gathered around the house hold fire, they discussed the unpleasant rumor. Some, with large faith, insisted that Santa Claus was no coward, and wasn't afraid of gunpowder, because he was used to bearing fire crackers " and pistols every Christmas, and his deer wore too well trained to scare at a noise they had so often heard. Others, more desponding, insisted that while Old Santa Clans was accustomed to fire crackers, rockets, pistols, and all that, he wasn't in the habit of traveling when they shot bullets, and cannon balls and bomb shells, and they were really afraid the old fellow would back out this year and wait "till this cruel war is over." Yesterday afternoon, while medita ting upon this unpleasant rumor, so har rass'mf; to little folks, we were arouspd frorricrtir reverie by a lively tap at the door. "Come An," we said. The door flew open and there he was not the old fellow, but his traveling agent, who looked as though he might be a son of the old man his eyes bearing the same merry twinkle and his countenance glowing with health and good humor. " Knowing it is customary for traveling agents to call first on newspaper men, I come," he said, "to inform the little peo ple, through the columns of your valua ble and widely circulated Journal, that the reports that Santa Claus will not ap pear as usual, the coming Christmas, are without foundation." The rumors to the contrary have aroused the indigna tion of the old gentleman to a high pitch, and consequently be has laid in a larger assortment of articles calcu lated to delight his young friends than he ordinarily carries. " I have a few sam ples," he continued, "which I will sub mit to your inspection." This merry little Angust was a shrewd fellow, and knew exactly what we most admired, fori before you could say Jack Robinson, he opened out before ns such a variety of books that we were completely bewil dered. There were stories for boys and stories for girls; there were Mother Goose's tales, and tales of Cock Robin; stories about animals; stories about good boys and bad boys; pretty girls, and ugly girls; books in blue and gold, and books with pictures. Besides all these, there were magnificent Bibles, all " done up " in Morrocco and gilt. He had also a large assortment of Photograph Albums, of every variety, in Morocco and velvet There were papier macho portfolios, beautiful in design and arranged inter nally just to suit the caprices of ordcr iOving young ladies. ' Having satisfied onr curiosity by a hasty examination of tho samples spreal out before us, we informed the agent tbat we thought they were worthy a favorable notice; but, we added, have you a sup ply on hand sufficient to supply all the youngsters in our Iargeicity? "Yes, yes," lie replied, with a knowing wink and nod. "We have established our headquarters at Dobell's Bookstore, on Main street;" saying which, with a polite bow, he disappeared. Josh. C. Cobb, of Eddyville, Ky., was in the city yesterday, laying in a new stock of goods. Josh., though but just past 21 years of age, was, as he just ly contends, the sponsor and god-father of Capt. Josh. Throop, who was named after him. Cobb is a gay and festive cus, and withal a very sensible fellow, as we know by the same token that he sub scribed for the Daily Journal, and paid a year s subscription in advance. Cobb and father are the merchant princes of Eddyville. Personal. We had the pleasure yes terday of making the acquaintance of Col. Alexander, of Calhoun. Kentucky, one of the most devoted Union men in- brave old State of Boon, Hardin and their brave compeers. When the war broke out Col. Alexan der gave up a lucrative office under the government, and took up arms in de fence of his government, and at Fort Donelson and Shiloh, did distinguished service in command of a battery. The Colonel does not fully subscribe to all the policy of the present adminis tration, but he declares very promptly that if the negro stands in the way of the perpetuation of the government, let the negro go. He also believes that every traitor has forfeited al! right to both property and life, and that their proper ty should be confiscated, and the pro ceeds placed in the Treasury of the United States,to aid in paying the expen ses of the war. Beautiful Christmas Presents. Our young friend, Wm. E. Hallock, has just received some of the most magnificent Perfumery it was ever our pleasure to look upon. His stock for the winter is now complete, consisting in part of beau tiful gilt and flowered" boxes, containing bottles of exquisite new Psrfuraes, real ly enchanting to inhale; fine Toilet Ex tracts, in Bohemian, gilt, cut and flow ered bottles and vases; pretty little bas kets, filled with pretty little bottles of sweet odors; Cologne Water, all sizes, styles and prices; Pomades and Cosmet ics in great variety ; in fact, his selec tion is one of the most magaificent ever offered to our citizens, and Uev should j not let this rare chance of purchasing ' holiday presents pass by without giving him a call. dec'22-2t Holiday Gifts. It is not true, as sup posed by some that arren and Conyng- ton's stock of magnificent toys and fan- cy goods is running low. Although their ; sales have been enormous, their stock is I still large and the variet complete. Z'- The Military Hop. There was a gay aud brilliant assemblage at Ma sonic Hall, last night the beauty, the gallantry and chivalry of the city, and " bright lamps shone over brave women and fair men. " There music rose with ila voluptuous swell, And alt went merry as a marriage bell. Good order and a vast delight prevail ed, the hours glided swiftly and sweetly by, and the grey streaks of dawn gilded the East, ere the gay scene closed. The Hall was elegantly and tastefully decorated with the banner of glory, and of beauty, and the radiance of the fair ladies and the glowing happiness of the gallants, transcended all expression. The supper, superintended by Charley Habbe, was elegant and luxurious. We undertake to say that a more magnifi cent ball was never given in this city. Only Think op it! Billy Caldwell ha3 " laid in " and will " open out," on to-morrow, expressly to make Christmas pass off gastromatically pleasant, 300 lbs. choice butter; 100 bunches celery; 200 dozen eggs; 20 cases Styles' corn fed oysters; 100 dressed turkeys; 100 dressed chickens. He says that he is so well convinced that our people love good eating, that he has no fears' he has over drawn the thing in laying in such quantities. The Hockport Democrat says the total amount paid the Spencer county legion was forty-six thousand one hun dred and three hilars and three cents Unfortunate Occurance We leam that two soldiers, belonging to the 35th Kentucky Cavalry, at Henderson, got into a dispute a day or two ago, and one shot the other, killing him instantly.
