JOURNAL BUILDINGS,
LOCUST STREET,
BETWEEN FIRST AND WATER.
The Man Without a Friend.
There was a day when Talleyrand arrived
in Havre from Paris. It was the dark
est hour of the Revolution. Pursued by
the bloodhounds of the Reign of Terror,
stript of every wreck of property, Tal
leyrand secured a passage to America in
a ship about to sail. He was a beggar
and a wanderer in a strange land, to
earn his daily bread by daily labor.
" Is there an American stopping at
your house 3" he asked the landlord of
the hotel. UI am bound to cross the
water, and would like a letter to a person
of some influence in the iew World.
the landlord hesitated a moment and
then replied:
"There is a gentleman up stairs, either
from America or Britain, but whether
from America or England I cannot telL"
He pointed the way, and Talleyrand,
who in his life, was bishop, prince and
minister, ascended the stairs; a misera
ble supplicant stood before the stranger's
door, knocked and entered.
In the far corner of the dingy lighted
room, sat a man of some fifty years of
rue, his arms folded and his Jhead bow
ed upon his breast. From a window di
rectly opposite, a flood of light poured
upon his forehead. His eye3 looked from
his downcast brows upon Talleyrand's
face with a peculiar and searching ex
pression. His face was striking in out
line, the mouth and chin indicative of
an iron will His form was vigorous,
even with the sorrows of fifty winters ; ho
was dressed in a dark, but rich and dis
tinguished costume.
Talleyrand advanced, stated he was a
fugitive, and with the impression that
the gentleman before him wasn Aier
icai solicited his kind feelings and offi
ces. He poured forth his history in eloquent
French and broken English.
"I am a wanderer and an exile. I am
forced to fly to the New World without
friend or home. You are an American.
Give me, then, I beseech you, a letter of
yours, so that I may be able to earn my
bread. I am willing to toil in my man
ner, a life of labor would be a paradise
to a career of luxury in France. You
will give me a letter to one of yonr
friends? A gentleman like you has
many frienJa." (
The strange gentleman arose and re
treated towara tne door ot the next i
chamber, his eyes still looking from be
neath his darkened brow.
"I am the only man of the New"
World who can raise his hands to God
and say: I have not a friend, not one,
in all Ameiiaa."
Taileyrandxiever forgot the overwhelm
ing sadness of look which accompanied
these words.
' Who are you?" he cried, as the
strange man retreated to the next room.
"My name," he replied, with a smile
that had more of mockery than of joy in
the convulsive expression, "my name is
Benedict Arnold.
He was gone. Talleyrand sank in
the chair, gasping the words:
"Arnold, the traitor!"
Thus he wandered over the face of tire
earth, another Cain, with the wanderer's
mark upon his brow.

The rise during the last 24 hours in
the river at this point was much more
rapid than heretofore, and large quanti
ties of drift was floating down yesterday,
and the rise continues uniform to Cia
cinnati, where there was over 26 feet in
the channel at noon yesterday.
At Pittsburg the river is slill falling
with 7 feet in the channel, with signs of
rain. There were numerous arrivals
during the day yesterday and some ac
tivity was manifest at the levee, though
the receipts and shipments were not
large.
The Bowen arrived about midnight
Monday, full of people, but with a light
freight list
She will be the regular packet for Pa
ducah and Cairo at 2 o'clock to day, and
will be found a pleasant and swift steam
er, second to none in speed on the Lower
Ohio. Capt. Bently and Billy Dunn are
accomplished officers and pleasant gen
tlemen, and will give the most courteous
attentions.
The Gen. Anderson went out at 2
o'clock yesterday, with a moderate trip
Capt Dan. Clarke, and Billy Lowth, are
both popular officers, and will no doubt
attract large passenger lists.
The famous big Grey Eagle will be the
palatial packet for Henderson and Lou
isrille this evening. She is commanded
by that great favorite of tho traveling
public, Capt James A. Lusk, whose ex
cellent characteristics are the theme of
praise on every tongue. Mr. O Bannon
makes the office of the Eagle radiant
with smiles, and all his guests feel at
home under his courteous attentions.
Capt C. R. Rudd, of the Curlew, was
in the city yesterday on a flying visit to

The steamer Mason leaves for Green
River this day, at 12 o'clock, positively.
She connects with the D- B. Campbell at
Rumsey, for Bowling Green, and will re
ceipt for freight through at $1 and $1.25
per hundred. She is light draught, swift
and reliable, and shippers may rely on
freight being punctually delivered. Joe
