The most important item yesterday, judging by the prominence given it by the news agents, is an account of the mill between Ileenan and King, in which the great American bruiser was forced to " throw up the sponge " in 25 rounds, lasting 35 minutes. It is stated that his shoulder was broken. Heenan could have had 6ghting enough in his own country in putting down the rebels, and had he been more of a patriot he would have been found in the Union array. As it is, he will meet with but little sympathy, and will be forgotten by all, except those who staked their money on him and lost A dispatch from Gen. Butler informs us that the recent intelligence of disaster to our fleet at Charleston, purporting to be copied from Richmond papers, and telegraphed from Fortress Monroe, is all a lie. The agent of the associated press East ought to be more careful and not give credence to such canards It is settled that a rev olution has taken place in the minds of Senators relative to the $300 exemption clause of the Conscription Law, and that the clause will undoubtedly be repealed, and no amount inserted in its place. Remarkable Conversion'. Both the New Albany Ledger and the Vincennes Su7i are out in paragraphs urging color" ed men in their respective counties to volunteer. The bounties and pay are temptingly displayed before the "cullud individooals," and they are implored to "fall in." Recruiting officers have been commissioned in both citiesi and the white men subject to the draft are giving the enterprise all the encouragement pos sible. We trust the conversions are gen uine and that there will be no back-sliding. The Removal of Schofiei.d. The country will applaud the removal of Scfcoheld as a just concession to tne loy al people of Missouri, who have borne long, if not patiently, witn nis semi-ireas- onable administration. ltosecrans is spoken of as his successor. Some pres sure is being brought to bear for the re annointment of Fremont to the com mand of the Department of Missouri. Lafayette Counts: Well, Schoh'eld not being removed.and not likely to be, we suppose the coun trv" meaninz the radicals will groan in spirit. N. A. Ledger. Ah, but ihe General has been remov ed. How does it affect your spirits ? The Great Sanitary Fair The San itarv Fair, which opened at Cincinnatj on Mondav last, promises to be an im- j , m mense affair. The most stupendous prep arations have been made, and most, if not all the rail roads running to the city, will carry visitors one or two days at half fare and give the entire receipts to the VnW The receints it is calculated will reach nearly a half million of dollars What country ever mde such provis ions for her heroes ? What Posey County is Doing Editor Journal. Sir : We all feel an interest in what is going on in own locality. Old Posey is aroused and doin? her full duty. Volunteering is go- inc on rapidly, and her quota is nearly full ; and hoping a good report from old Posey may stimnlateJVanderburgh and other counties in doing their duty, I take pleasure in communicating to you that we are now able to claim old Posey as the banner county of Indiana, CaDtain Vane Milner commenced re cruiting for the last call, about the 20th of October, and raised one company ol I eavalrv in twentv davs, placed them in I . . - .. i .a camrj; and not t.eing satisnea wun me good work already done, came back on last Fridav to finish recruiting the quota of old Posey; and the Captain certainly l.np e.irtrtnr.lvl l'-'"wl JVlyM. Jvnat-vJJCW as wc are somewhat interested) for the Captain has his second company almost full, which will in all probability relieve our county from the draft If all of our recruitinz officers were as energetic and efficient as the Captain we would have no If capaoui The Senate to-day made the PaciGc Railroad Committee a standing Commit tee of nine members. The Sena te Judiciary Committee meets to-morrow to take up charges against Senator Hale. More than one law yer in the Senate and in the House do not hesitate to say tney would ratner re sign their seats than surrender their pro fessional practice in Washington. The veteran regimeats in the Army oi the Potoma: are to receive their bounty money immediately. The first install ment will amount to about szou per man. The number of men from the Army of the Potomac that have re-enlisted for the war, is over 10,000. The sentiments of Senators respecting the $300 exemption is wholly changed. l'hey will strike out the exemption clause and not insert any amount. Ihe feeling is general that the army must be filled up, and the war vigorously prose cuted to an end. Senator Wilson will soon introduce a bill providing for the enlistment of sol diers in reb:llioua States. The desire is to get them into veteran regiments, and at the same time enlarge the neid irom whice the loyal States can draw troops. European News.
