A Good Move The ladies of Vin cennes propose giving the soldiers of Camp Knox a dinner on Christmas day. : BA correspondent of the Vincen nes Sun, says the Old Fourteenth Indi ana is now in comfortable wiuter quar-. ters, with, plenty of rations, including onions and potatoes. The boys are ma king themselves comfortable, and whit ing away the time by paying dominoes and eating oysters. Major-General French, their old divis ion commander, sometime ago ordered a new set of breech-loading rilles for the regiment. The guns have arrived at Washington, and will soon be in the hands of the boys, who know how to use a rifle in the manner best calculated to rid the country of rebels. A Huge Porker. There is now on exhioition'at John Gavisk's Pork House a hog that weighs 681 pounds and measures 7 feet from the point of the shoulder to the root of the tail. It was raised by- Sims L. Holcomb of Johnson township, Gibsen county, and is said to be the largest pig in this market this season. Frightfdx Accidest. As the mail train was passing down last evening, at the crossing of the road about 2J miles this side of Vincennes, a man named Mart Pea, with his wife and bis wife's mother, attempted to cross the road in a wagon: and th train, which was running at a high rate of speed, struck the horses about the shoulders, mashing them to pieces, and the wagon was dashed by the concussion against the train and knocked into kindling wood, not a spoke, we are told, being left in any wheel. The three persons were hurled from the wagon with great force, and the man and his wife terriblv if not fatally iniured, while. strange to say, the old lady escaped comparatively uninjured. No blame can be attached to the engi neer, as the train was iu plain view of the road, for some distance, coming at a high rate of speed. The railroad crosses the ccdnty road diagonally, and the wagon, as we understand, was going nearly the same direction as the train. The man remained senseless until the train left, but his wife, who was terribly cut on the head and face, was sensible, and some hopes were entertained of her recovery. Pea and wife were young persons, and had not long been married. We are indebted to Mr. J. W. Henson, mail agent, for the details of the above terrible accident. Since writing the above, a dispatch from the railroad agent at Vincennes, says the doctors think that the woman may recover, but the man cannot possi- Mk 19" The Fair last night was quite largely attended, and was a very pleas ant affair. The room, however, would have held a great many more quite comfortably. Each department was well patronized and at the close a'large number of arti cles' were sold at auction, realizing fair price, .. We hope and beiieve the Fair will prove a success pecuniarily, as it was in all other respects. Christmas Dixsers. From the pre parations making by our provision hous es, we are sure no one need to go with out a good Christmas dinner. Poultry and game of all kinds are dis played in great abundance. Caldwell, Elliott, Frank Felker and others, are get ting on vast supplies. It makes an epicure's mouth-water to pass one of those houses. A Liberal Offer. We notico by the Terre Haute papers that Capt W. Shew maker of the steamer D. B. Campbell, has offered to pay $100 each to three young married men who will enlist in Harrison township, Vigo county, for three years or during the war. This is generous and praiseworthy. Wh of our moneyed men will mrke the same liberal offer for recruits in Pig eon township. It is a matter of speculation, how many turkeys, geese and other fowls will be consumed to-morrow, and it is also a matter of speculation whether there will he enough to supply the demand. Enough is known, however, to warrant us in saying that Elliott, at his Family Gro- cerv, has received, and will continue to Via linli. se a nan title s danne ria-t-sj r J I 1 IC arrangements to have a large stock on hand to-morrow. Nbw Yobk, Dec. 22. The Govern merit has decided that the safety of American vessels leaving this port rt quirea that no persons shall be allowed to leave this port as passengers or other- wise, on any American vessel, without first receiving a passport from the Mar shal of this District. It is understood that a gunboat has already been station ed at Sandy Hook by Admiral Paulding to intercept every vessel leaving this port by that ontfet, and another vessel at Throgg's Neck to examine vessels leav ing by the Soand, with instructions to detain such as are without passes. Auy one can obtain the passport who can have his loyalty properly vouched for. The adoption of these stringent meas ures will probably prevent a repetition of the Chesapeake affair. These Spectacles ars a perfect prersntatlTs by nse ing thsra constantly, causing ths eye to gain its healthy power and retain It to old age. Haring had rery considerable experience also in cateract eyes, In adapting glasses to such Tision, would impress on ths minds of all persons aeed lngglassssof any description, to apply for such only to a regular Optician, making that his sole study and business for years, he alone being able to know from the peculiar anatomy of ths eye the naturs of thsdefrct, whether arising from weak ness of sight, flattening of the pnpll, or other misfortune occurring to the Tision. The eye be Ing the most delicate organ, and of the most Tital Importance to ths happiness and prosperity of man, should nerer be tampered with, either by the indlridnal orby those who, for mere profit, take upon themselves ths selling of Optical In struments, and who know nothing of the anatomy of the eye, or hew to discover the proper glasses fct snit ths peculiarity of ths different sights of those needing spectacles. Thousands hare lost their Tision entirely from not applying to those naly 3 ualiflnd to know the different defects in each in iTldual'a sight, and how to remedy It by wearing tbe proper kind of spectacles. I. Rittenberg, haring had ore r twenty-fire years experience as a regular practical optician, can assure those giriug him their patronage that by applying to him they can get the rery right kind of glasses adapted to their case, and in almost eTery one secure good eye sight to old age. Netr sighted persons can also obtain of him the Istest Improvement in spectacles suited to them, being a new invention. 1 hare also the most recently new Field Glasses, with Astronilcal eye pieces, being rery snporior to the old opera glaas arrangement. All kinds ot Optical Instruments repaired at the shortest no tice, and thgse haring purchased spectacles of me, and baring had the misfortune to break one of the lenses, can hare It replaced gratuitously by apply ing to L RITTENBERG, 67 Main Street, Bet.
