Sam Johnson was a. culled man,
Who lived i -n by the sea ;
He owned ret tan tarris:
That stood bout i.e foot time ;
And the way that creature chawed up rats
Was gorjuss for to see.
One da; this dorg was slumberin'
Behind the kitchen t- Te,
When sudden W a wicked flea
A ugly little cove
Commenced upon his faithful back
With many jumps to rove.
Then up arose that terrier,
With frenay in his eye.
And waiting only enough
To make a toucbin' cry,
Commenced to twist himself around
Most wonderfully spry.
But all in vain ; his shape was slch
So awful short and fat
That though he doubted op hisself,
And strained hisself at that.
His mouth was half an inch away
From where the rarmiut sat.
The dog sat up an awful yowl,
And twisted like an eel,
Emitting cries of misery
At every nip he'd feel.
And tumb in' down and jnmpin' np
And raasSs' like awheel.
But still that most awdecious flea
Kept up a constant chaw
Just where he coulda't be scratched out
By any reach of paw.
And always half an inch beyond
His wictim's snappiu' jaw.
Sam Johnson heard the noise, and came
To save his animile ;
But when he see the critter spin
A I..-, kia all the while
He dreaded hiderifobia.
And then began to rile.
" The pup is mad enough, " says he,
And luggin' in his axe,
He gave the recti id tarrier
A pair of awful cracks,
Tt. at ret', he. 1 bias out upon the floor
As dead as carpet tacks.
MORAL.
Take warnin' by this tarrier,
Now turned to sassidge meat ;
And when misfortin' flea shall come
Upon your back to eat,
Beware, or you may die because
Ton can't make both ends meet.
JtepThiladelphia is famous for its
mortuary poetry. We kept a file of the
Ledger (says the Boston Gazette) once
for three years for the sake of its elegiac
"(lines. " The following epitaph we find
credited to that locality:
Farewell, my children dear,
1 am not dead but sleeping here ;
Tell your father in a lerter,
God took me to make mo better.

Joseph, (Mo.) post-office the other day
with the following address:

A Philosophic Darkey.
A Cumberland River correspondent
givS a humorous account of a eoloqny
with a philosephie " contraband'' whom
he met on that classic stream. He says:
" I noticed npon the hurrican deck to
day, an elderly darkey, with a philosophic
and retrospective cast of countenance,
squatted upon his bundle, toasting him
self against the chimney, and apparently
plunged into a state of profound medi
tation. Finding, npon inquiry, that he
belonged to the 9th Illinois, one of the
most gallantly behaving and heavy loos
ing regiments at the Fort DoheTson bat
tie, and part ot which was aboard, I be
gan to interrogate him on the subject.
His philosophy was so much in the Fall
staffian vein, that I will give his views in
his own words, as near as my memory
serves me.
" Ware you in the fight 7"
" Had a little taste-of it, sa."
" Stood yonr ground, did you ?"
" No, sa, I runs."
" Run at the first fire, did yon ?"
"Yes, sa, anc would have run sooner
bad I known it war comin'."
" Why, that was not very creditable to
yonr courage."
" Dat isn't in my line, sa; cookin's
my perfession."
" Well, but have you no regard for
yonr reputation?"
" Reputation am Jnuffin to me by de
side ob life."
" Do yon consider your life of more
value than other people's?"
"It's wuf more to me, sa."
" Then you mast value it very highly."
" Yes, sa. I does more dan all ob dis
world, sa more dan a million ob dol
lars, sa; for what would dat be wuf to a
man wid de bref out ob him ?" Sef-pres-erbashum
am de fust law wid me."
" Then patriotism and honor are noth
ing to you."
" Nuffin whatever, sa. I regards dem
among de vanities."
It is safe to predict that the dusky
corpse of that African will never darken
the field of carnage.

The river was rising quite r&pidly and
boats of medium size can now run up
the Indiana shore with safety inside the
bar.
There was but little done on the levee
yesterday.
The Leonidas landed considerable
freight here.
The Bowen went out with an excellent
trip.
The Big Grey Eagle- came in late in the
evening with a fair trip and returned
after midnight to Louisville.
The people's favorite, the swift-winged
Armada, will be the regular packet for
Cairo at 2 o'clock to-day, Capt Dexter
a most experienced officer will command
and Perry McGriff and Zack Taylor will
do the honors of the office.
That paragon of the Louisville line,
the new and elegant Taraseon, will be
the desirable packet for Henderson and
Louisville this evening. She is com
manded by Capt. Joseph H. Bunce, the
very prince of officers, and the comfort
of passengers, will be attentively and
courteously looked after by Mr. George
A. Williams, whose praise is on every
tongue.
The Missouri Democrat of yesterday
says :
Th river was rising yesterday and
the night before. Hereafter the
City Engineer will, in his reports, com
pare the stage of the water daily, with
that of December, 1862. On thismorning
the water was seven and three-quarter
inches lower than ever before recorded.
The steamer A. J. Sweeney reports
3J feet of water by tho lead in the chan
nel at the worst points; five feet at
Crawford's, and the river found its way
through nine channels at Hcrculaneum.
.Nothing further has been learned m
recard to the upper rivers, except what
we reproduce from exchanges, Leaven
worth papers of last Saturday say of the
Missouri:
The river is closed and the ice will
soon be suflicielly strong to cross upon

site here will pay largely to any one who
wishes to undertake that business.
The St. Joseph Herald of Sunday
savs:
The ice has become sufficiently firm in
the river opposite this city to bear foot
passengers.
