The river last evening was still swell
ing very slowly and will probably come
to a stand by this morning. There is a
fine stage of water now for the largest
class boats, and the famous Atlantic, tak
ing advantage of the rise, revisits her
old home, pasaing up yesterday morning
with a moderate cargo of sugar, and oth
er southern products, for Louisville.
The Atlantic is now the champion
steamer of the western waters, and
reigoti8 without a rival. Her officersi
though young in years, are mature in all
the accomplishments that go to make up
the corteous gentleman and popular offi
cer. . The big Grey Eagle, on her way down,
broke her doctor at Fliut Island, and
was of course unable to make her usual
trip. She , however, repaired and drop
ped down to Cannelton for coal, where
she was overtaken by the Tarascon,
which took her trip, including nenrlv
400 passengers, and the Eagle returned
to Louisville.
The imperial big Grey Eagle will he
the unrivaled packet from and to Louis
ville to-morrow evening. Capt Lusk
and Mr. O'Bannon know how to mnke
p.tssengers on the Eagle feel as if at
home, and their Christinas will lat till
New Year's, and beyond.
The Armada came in from Cairo
yesterday morning having been detained
several hours. She had an excellent
trip, including 150 mules, which she
transferred to the Atlantic, for Louis
ville. ' The Armada got a fair freight back,
and was crowded with passengers, the
Tarascon adding largely to tbe number.
The Armada is rapidly becoming the
favorite packet.
The Capitola passed up yesterday from
Nashville, aud we were pleased to meet
our clever and excellent friend.?, the
Thompson Brothers, and to find them in
high old health and spirits.
To-day the Gen. Anderson will be the
sole packet for Paducah and Cairo, and
will leave at 12 o'clock. Capt. Dan.
Clark and Billy Lowth are her chief of
ficers. To -morrow th Bowen will be the reg
ular packet for Cairo, unless, as is pos
sible, the palatial Superior, takes her
place. Capt Bantly of the Bowen, is

Bowen is noted for her great speed.
The Superior is above all praise, and
under the command of Gus. Dnsouchet,
who is immensely popular on the whole
line of the river, will reign unrivaled.
The neat and elegant steamer Victo
ry, Capt. Bogard, will leave for Rumsey
at noon to-morrow, and will connect with
the magnificent R. K. Dnnkerson, whose
fame is immortal, and will henceforth
with the Dunkerson form a regular line
hence to Bowling Green.
The New Albany Ledger of Wednes-
says:
The river opposite this city continues
to rise. In the canal at noon to-day
mere was mil nine teet water, and seven
leet in the Indiana chute over the Falls

The St. Louis Democrat of yesterday
says:

report the Cumberland as being again
rising rapidly, it is probable the river will
not fall fast, and may even take another
rise.
The weather is still clear, and the air
was 80 mild and balmy to-dav that over
coats were voted "boreg," and laid aside.
Since dark, however, the wind has hpn
blowing from the north, and it has chang-
me aimospnere very perceptibly.
Business was as dull to-day as it has
been in twelve months. The levee was
almost deserted, even bv the dravmen.
and nothing of consequence was either
received or shipped until after dark, at
wnicn me Alone and Sunny South began
receiving.
The Tarascon had the largest passen
ger trip of the season yesterday and at
tracted great admiration by her majestic
appearance.
