Thorn, Super intendent of tbe monitor Tippecanoe, addressed to Messrs. Hornbrook, Shank lin, Viele, Orr, and others, stating that it would be impossible, for various rea sons, to bring the monitor to the wharf on New Years day for exhibition, as bad been desired. Among other reasons, is the one tbat the Tippecanoe will be re quired to leave on this rise for Cairo, and all the interium will be occupied in getting ber ready for tbe voyage. Both Mr. Greenwood and Mr. Thorn regret their inability to gratify the citizens of Evansville, and to contribute to a cause so worthy. Bow at Pbinckton One Man Dak osrodslt Woubdkd. From a gentle man who came down oa yesterday's morninar train, we learn a very serious affray occurred in Princeton on Mon' day. ' Two young men, named Pinion and Williams, got into a fight, and Pin ion being much the stronger man, one Skidmore expressed bis determination to separate the combatants. Pinion No. 2 said there should be no interference, Angry words ensued and were succeed ed by blows. Pinion No. 1 seeing his brother engaged in a fight, suspended hostilities with Williams, and going to the relief of his brother, stabbed Skid- more twioe, once in tbe bowels, inflict ing a wound three inches in length, and penetrating to the cavity, the other un der the left shoulder blade. Pinion was arrested and held to bail in the. sum of $500. The other parties were discharg ea, As the train passed down yesterday morning, Skidmore's condition Was con gidered critical There were four of the Pinion broth ers, all refugees from Kentucky, and af- I ter the affair was over with Skidmore, other parties fell on the two brothers not engaged in the quarrel and beat them somewhat, and they considered it be?t to leave the place. . Bereaved. We have just learned, with deep regret, of the demise of tbe wife of Mr. H. F. Ferris, of the firm of Ferris, Sparks & Co., of this city. She died on Monday, at .the residence of her parents,; In Petersburg, Ky. She was an exemplary young lady, just in the be" ginning of a life that promised fair, but was suddenly taken away by that fell dea trover consumption, ahe was - one I of whom it could truthfully be 'said, I "None knew her but to love. lion named bar but to praiw.' v auk. vmi,) nuy una dv i come among us, we extena our warmest y-p Cairo again Movino. A Convention of Farmers, we believe, was held in i Cairo on Saturday a week, to devise some method to find cheaper transporta tion for produce to the seaboard.' They adopted over a column of "whereases" and " resolves ".asking Congress to im prove rivers, dig canals, and the State government to reeulate the freight tar- I iff on lno railroads. A great country I is uairo. ana no mistane. uommer- cial conventions and commercial situa tions, big conflagrations, murders, fever and ague, robberies and mud are the great staples. "! " - John B.. Goooh. This distinguished temperance orator has recently been de livering a course of lectures at Corin thian Hall, Rochester, New York, ant) the crowd was so great that, it is esti mated, 2,000 people were compelled to return home, being unable to obtain ad mittance. Among those thus - crowded out were many holders pf course tickets, and this notwithstanding the price of ad mission to outsiders had been increased from 25 to 50 cents. We wonder if Gough would draw that way in this city. Pboposed Editorial Convention. The press of Illinois is agitating the subject of an Editorial Convention, and Galesburg, Decatur, Mendota, Peoria and Springfield have been suggested as the place of meeting. The Cairo press, of course, urges the claims of that embryo city, and the Democrat Bays, by making Cairo the locality, the editor from sleepy cities like Decatur, Mbndota, Peoria and Springfield, would have an opportunity to learn something about enterprise, of which they ' are entirely ignorant. Cairo and Chicago are the only Uo cities in Illinois, and bringing the Bip Van Winkles of the press from their plodding towns and villages to contemplate our growing greatness, would not only give them a pleasant surprise, but might, also, wake them ep to the importance of making an effort to advance the prosperity of their own homes. -j "' " tr?' We never saw Cbriutmas more universally obserred by oar citi zens than on Monday. - At an early boar all placps of busines except toy shops, candy shops, jt-welry and book stores, asd whisky shops, of course, were closed by mutual and tacit consent. " Young America had commenced the work of "celebrating " on 8nrlay night by firing pistols and shooting-crackers, which was very naughty, and renewed the attack early Monday morning and kept it np with little intermission . nntil late at nuht, and a vast amount of powder in varions combinations was noisily con verted into smoke. '. One of two slight musses occurred during the day, super induced by Boomerang and Tanglefoot. Otherwise, - excellent order' prevailed throughout the city, and everybody, With the exception of ' a few "rounders seemed anxious -to make it a day of rational enjoyment, and we .thing they generally succeeded. Magnificent dinners were prepared at the hotels. That at tbe Sheerwood House, we know from experiencewas superb thanks to our friend SaeUacd bis courteous Major Domo and' innu merable family, re-unions were held all over the city, and joy and gladnesa and peace prevailed. Imposing services were held during the morning in tbe Church- of the Assamp tion, and in St. Paul's Church, and were largely ueuucu. In the afternoon the Sabbath School it- . . ... rit.- 1 oi mevine BlreeV jrresDjier.-o vurtu had a joyous festival-attended by hun dreds of bright-faced youths and inter ested teachers and- friends.' ; An abun' dance of refreshments had been provide ed. There was delightful music and in-, teresting speeches from Brother Glover, Revs. Bowdin, Dodge and others, and happy time generally was had. At 6J o'clock the Sabbath - School connected with St. Paul's Church had a grand Christmas festival, including two mag nificent Christmas trees, heavily . laden with gifts for the happy scholars In teresting exercises were held, embracing delightful music and an interesting and instructive examination of the scholars in the catechism of the church, in which the children manifested a wonderfalpro ficiency.. ; The two trees,' wbon lit op by the tiny sparkling tapers, presented a gorgeous appearance, and , the eyes ot the Sunday j School scholars Sparkled with delight. The church was densely crowded in every - part, and , numbers were compelled to leave,, unable, to .'ob tain entrance. '..The exercises were in the highest degree interesting and edi fying, and had the. rare merit on such occasions of being brief. " There were no services held la the Methodist Church during the day, and none, so far - as we have learned, in the Walnut street Pres byterian Church, The usual quiet of out city againjpre- vailed after 10 or 11 o'clock, all having. as we hope, enjoyed l a merry Christ mas.
