Council Bluffs, Aug. 11.—At a meet ing of the board dl directors of the Southwestern Iowa Horticultural so ciety held here this week, it was decided that the next annual conven tion and exhibit of the organization will be in the city of Creston on De cember i, 8 and 9. Paul S. Junkin, editor of the Advertiser, and Hyati Barnhill, of Creston, presented the claim of the city of Creston as proper and convenient point of hold ing the convention and the board b? vote acceded to their request and named Creston as the meeting place. The society is composed of aboi 100 of the prominent fruit raisers in southwestern Iowa and is organized for the purpose of promoting the in terests of the horticulturists of this part of the state. J. M. Bechtel, for many years genet al iranager of nie Burlington system, who resides at Hamburg and operates a large fruit farm, is president of the organization. At the meeting in December an ex hibit of all kinds of fruits grown in this portion of the state will be made and the display will be free to nil those who are interesteC or care to see what a really great fruit country southwestern Iowa is. All the most prominent horticulturists of the state and many noted fruit raisers from other parts of the United States wll be present and discuss many ques tions of interest to the fruit grower. Figures Given for Criminal Costs. Des Moines, Aug. 11.—Statistics pre pared at Des Moines show that Lee county is the third in the state of Iowa in the amount of money expend ed in presecuting and convicting crim inals of high and low degree. The ex penditure in this county was $6,267. 95. Polk leads with $40,261.14 and Scott county was second with $17,995. 01. Muscatine, Aug. 11.—The Muscatine Pearl Co. will start operations at their new plant on East Sixth street in a couple of days. It was the intention of the management to begin th's morning, bpt owing to some delay the plant will start about Thursday. Burlington, Aug. 11.—The receipts of the internal revenue office located at Burlington for the Fourth Iowa d's trict, comprising all southern Iowa show a decrease of $20,000 for the year ending July 1, 1909. The an nual report of Collector H. O. Weav er has been received at Washington and is made public in the report of the commissioner, which was receiv ed at the local offices today. The total collections for the Fourth Iowa district for the past twelve months amounted to $540,476.87, a de crease of $20,000 compared with the business of the year previous. The decrease in revenue of the fourth district was directly due to the liquor legislation. The acts afTectod the business in every city in the dis trict Burlington, Des .vioines, Daven port, Muscatine, Ottumwa, Council Bluffs, Keokuk and other places. It further predicted that the internal revenue for the coming year will show a much greater decrease. The revenue receipts for the entire United States for the year were $246, 212,719.22, a decrease 'of $5,483(230.82. The entire collections for Iowa were $967,593, of which the southern die trlct turned In $540,476.87, which is over half.
