THE REGISTER LAMAR, . . COLORADO. Lives of croakers all remind us w« can make our lives a pests and de parting leave behind us feelings of relief and rest Imaginary evils soon become real ones by indulging our reflections on them: us he who in a melancholy fan cy sees something like a face on the wall or the wainscot can, by two or « three touches with a lead pencil make it look visible, and agreeing with what he fancied. Life is not a game of ••button, but ton, button, who’s got the button?” with its message ' hold fast all I give you,” and its end. empty bonds for most the useless button for the favor ed one. He who takes for bis motto, ••Get all you can, keep all you get” will invariably come to the preacher’s conclusion. ••Vanity of vanities, all is vanity, ” sooner or later. Ix order to fit yourself for your boy's society you must order your thoughts and marshal your acquire ments in away which no other asso ciation compels. His implicit faith in you not only induces honesty of mind in retfrrn, but startle* yo» with a lesson which you greatly need to learn—namely, the exceeding nar rowness of your own knowledge There Is no such educator as a bright boy or girl in intimate association with father or mother—none which teaches so much or disciplines the mind or character so wholesomely. The idea that education ends with the coming of manhood is one which no really educated mind entertains. But there are not many persons who realize the extent to which men and women are educated by their children. In fact it is from thi3 source that tbs best of education comes, and if mer and women were wiser they would make more of their advantages in this way. No grown person can associate on terms of loving familiarity with his children without having his mind enlarged, his faculties trained to higher efficiency and his soul mads better and sweeter by their converse. Odd wills have been sustained by the courts these many years. There was Thelu‘ton’s will often quoted, which left £600.000 to tfccumulata through the lives of his sons and grandsons, the accumulated property to be paid to his oldest great-grand son on the death of the sons and grand; on?, or else to be conveyed to the sinking fund for the payment of the British national debt. It was cal culated that the accumulations would amount to £19,000.000 by the timo it fell duo, but there was much litiga tion over the matter, and the oldest great-grandson received only about the original £COO,OOO. The not unfamiliar spectacle is be fore us of two sots of people, each desiring ardently that which th« other is able to bestow, yet seemingly incapable of arriving at an under standing. The farmer wants workers; he is able to give abundantly for that which ho receives. The laborer of the city wants living wages, pure air. clean water and a decent home. The farmers’ need is of course more sharp ly felt, recently, than it has been for some time, but it always exists, and the question why it has not been met more fully has yet to be answered. The morbid preference for a high-pressure existence and the prejudice, wtich is soon to become obsolete, against the farm are the principal reasons which present them, and neither of them is good and suf ficient. Many persons in forming and in car rying out their ideas of justice fail to take account of the element of time. They intend to deal justly with every one, to withhold from no one his due, to fulfil every obligation and satisfy every claim; but they feel no spacin' duty to hasten these acts of justice. If they are done eventually, they are content, and think that others should be content also. The hours, or daya or weeks that may elapse between the claim and their fulfilment of it do not seem to them very important if it is but ultimately discharged. They would not for the world evade a debt, but they will delay its payment without any compunction. There are of course cases where this may be unattended with any apparent evil results; but there are others where inconvenience ensues, and still others where suffering and loss is entailed. Kind words have a much larger and more important mission than is usual ly supposed. They are much more than mere sweetness of daily life; they prepare the way for every kind of in tercourse that may be necessary and facilitate its aim. Take, lor instance, the case in which it is often thought best to dispense with kind words— that of one who is called upon to crit icise or to reprove. The manner of doing this delicate task frequently makes all the difference in the way it la received. Given with kindly feel ing* and couched in kind words, it carries with it a power on the heart that can never be exerted by cold severity or hot anger. If the purpose of reproof be the good of the offender, not'the outlet of indignant displeas ure, no medium can be found so favor able as the earnest and kindly speech that betrays sympathy, compassion and hope. ._ _ -1 WESTERN NEWS NOTES. The passengers saw their danger, began to scream and make a precipitate exit through the door, but before all were off the platform the locomotive struck the car and hurled it with all on board into the air. Twc or three people were thrown some dis tance. but strange to say, none were hurt. The car was smashed to pieces A party of three, consisting of Sup erintendent Choate, Mr. Hahn and Mr. Grossmeyer, and expert sent out by the Denver and Florence Oil Com pany, visited Pete Connelly’s ranch tc look at the oil and gas indications there.
