COLORADO. \Vill receive infants and children under 16 years. For particulars regarding admission address the sup erintendent. \H !Hz As “Close Observer" Sees It. The following communication from a prominent democrat shown how the harmony which the Sparks loves to tell abont was obtained: Lamar, Colo., Sept. 1, 1897. Ed. Register: At a meeting called for the purpose of considering the division of the spoils and distribution cf county offices at the comiug elec tion, there was present to represent the silver republican party Geo. T. Feast; to represent the democratic party George T. Feast, and G. T. Feast to represent the populist party. It was moved by Feast, seconded and unanimously carried by Feast, that the following named parties Im* nominated to till the respective coun ty offices during the ensuing term: Superitendeut of Schools, D. H. Dickason (his name is Deuis.) Treasurer, J. W. Ilent. Clerk, S. B. Faulkner. Sheriff, A. L Beaver. Assessor, (for convention purpoaea only) James Baird. Commissioner to be selected by a joint committee of democrats and |>opuli4t* under tbe supervision of Feast. The leaders ot the three parties were instructed to carry out the plan outliued if they wish to feed at the public crib for tbe next two years, and the Sparks was instructed to howl goldhtig and whip the voters into line, in consideration of which it shall have an increase of 25 per cent on county printing. It was unanimously decided that Sheriff McKenzie he laid onthesbelf because he will not allow drunken ness and riotous conduct on the streets of Lamar, and otherwise discharges the duties of his office, w hich is duced inconvenient and a great nuisance, “don’t cher know.” The democrats, populists and silver republicans were directed to meet in convention on 1 ratify the above pro gram, which may however l>e some what changed by order of G. T. Feast. A Close Observer. A Terrible Collision,. The roost disastrous wreck that has occnnni on the Santa Fe system for years was that which occnred near Emporia on Thursday morning be | tween trains No. 1 and 2. There was a mistake caused by the light which I should have stopped No. 1 at first station east of Emporia burning low the engineers failed to see it. and the train drawn by two engines flew ! past at the rate of forty miles an hour, and in a few minutes met No. i 2, the fa*t mail. The three engines were not only «.mashed but their boilers blew* up i making a deep hole in the gronnd into which the engines and mail and 1 express cars were thrown. They are all a total wreck, tire having finished the work of destruction. The smok I ing cars on both trains were almost ; as badly wrecked and all the passen l ger cars somewhat injured. The loss of life was fearful. About ! fifteen were either killed outright or died soon after, and as many more were badly injured That the train crews were faithful the result shows. The three engineers and three fire men were killed, one express messen ger and one brakeman killed and two NUMBER 15. wounded, and out of seven postal clerks two were killed and four badly injured. The westbound train was loaded with excursionists from one of the Bryan picnics, and Mr. Bryan was on the train but escaped without injury’. Maid of Honor Contest. As the time for the close of the contest is approaching excitement is running high over the election and a man, who reads his paper on the street, is liable to get his coupon cut while he waits. A number of young ladies are be ing voted for and all have admirers who are working earnestly for them. The vote is being held buck for tho last days of the contest, hut many are at work securing coupons for their favorites. The contest closes next Thursday, September 10, and the ballots will then be canvassed and announced by the county clerk. Tho coupon on uhich to vote can he found in this issue, and a number of extra COpi< s are on hand, which can he ohtaimd at oc per copy. winy Valley. Rev. A. D. Several of the train crew and some thing over two hundred head of cattle were killed. Cal escaped by jumping from to, r! train to the ground just Indore th.» crash occured, as he could see what was coming. He is now at I Missouri Pacific railway b<»spital at hospital at Kansas City and getting along nicely. Jay. To the Buying Public.
