NEW ZEALAND LUCKY STONES
English Race Track Habitues Eager
to Poeeeas Them.
Since it was discovered, after SL
Amant won the Derby, that his own
er, Leopold de Rothschild, carried a
New Zealand "lucky stone” In his
pocket, among the smart set there
has been quite a run upon Bond street
Jewelers for them and they have been
much In evidence at the Ascot meet
ings. But those who have displayed
such eagerness to possess themselves
o t this emblem of good fortune lose
sight of the fact that Leopold de
Rothschild's faith In Us efficacy was
not sufficiently strong to induce him
to run SL Amant for the Grand Prlx
and risk another encounter with Ed
mond Blanc's horses. Like his French
opponent, the sporting scion of the
house of Rothschild backs his Judg
ment and not his luck. However,
fashionable Jewelers are catering to
the popular fancy by laying in a stock
of these pretty translucent green
■tones, carved to represent acorns,
shamrocks, pigs, ducks and other va
rious fantastic creations, and It Is not
unlikely that they may “catch on"
across the Atlantic. The native name
given to the stone In New Zealand Is
"Pounamu” and geologists know it as
u species of slade. The Maoris usual
ly wear It suspended around their
nocks, and when thus carried It Is
known as the “Hel Tiki,” or neck
god. They credit It with marvelous
powers against evil as well as great
potency In bringing Its owner good
lack.

British Sailor Filled Gap In Broken
Infantry Ranks.
Admiral Wilson of the British navy
won his Victoria cross at the battle
of El Teb in 1884. There was a gap In
the square and five or six of the en
emy made a vicious rush forward, at
tempting to get inside. Capt. Wilson,
who was present with the naval bri
gade, advanced to meet them alone,
but his sword broke endeavor
to cut one of the Intruders down.
Hereupon the officer, Instead of beat
ing a hasty retreat, stood his ground
and began bowling over the enemy
with his fists. Either from the na
ture of the ground or, as the record
puts It, “the surprising nature of his
attack,” Capt. Wilson escaped with •
f*w wounds and was rescued by tne
square closing up round him. Sir Red
vers Duller describes the act as the
moat dangerous he ever witnessed.
Cloths for Presents In Japan.
Of one singularly attractive and
decorative detail of Japanese daily
life little Is known in this country;
yet it touchee all classes, from no
bles to coolies—the use of present
cloths. These are squares of all sorts
of materials, from twenty Inches to
two yards across. They are used to
tie up the gifts which are exchanged
on all possible occasions. After the
presentation of the. gift the cloth Is
removed and returned to the giver by
a servant. These cloths are handed
down from generation to generation,
and among them are found some of
the finest specimens of the old em
broidery and dyeing. Many of the
square pieces of Japanese embroidery
used In this country for pillow and ta
ble covers were originally used as cov
erings for presents.—House BeautifuL
Celerity of the Pianist.
A pianist has to cultivate the eyes
as to see fifteen hundred signs In
•ne minute, the fingers to make 2.U00
movements, and the brain to under
stand all these signs, as well as di
rect all these movements. In playing
Weber’s “Motto Perpetuo” a pianist
has to read i. 451 notes in loss than
four minutes, or nineteen a second,
but the eye can receive only about
ten consecutive impressions a second.

a player does not see every note
singly,Abut In groups, probably a bar
or more at ate view.
