Hailstorm Causes Great Loss.
One of the moat terrific aud crop damaging hail storms ever known hi this acetion occurod last night at about 10:00 o’clock. The path of the hall storm starts at u point seven miles northeast of Granada, reaching a point some place south of Hartman, covering an area two miles east and west by three miles north and south. The hail storm last ad fully an hour and a half, beating the cops and grasses into the ground and covering the earth with a white mantle fully six Inches 'in depth. The hail was of the size of waLuuts, and where fine alfalfa fields ready for the reaper once stood, now can be seen only an occasional spear or blade of grass completely beat In to the earth. Oats and sugar beets were served in a slmlliar manner, and where yesterday the happy, thrlf ty farmer could look over his posses sions blossoming with an abundant harvest, today desolation and waste greets his eyes. —Granada Times. A Funny Stage Situation. Among the funny scenes in the Pair of Pinks performance the Jew Co h oust ela has been arrested for stealing clothing and is placed in Percy and Harold ’& private peniten tiary In Cell No. 6. Next to him In Cell No. 7 Is a moo on Incarcerat ed for murder. The Jew complains on his coll being too small, and tin lady trades cells with hdin. just as the governor wires the warden to electrocute the prisoner In No. 7. which gives opportunity for a very funny situation during the electrocu tion by Percy and Harold, the two Pinkerton tramps. Breckinridge Oil Well. Operations at the oil well of the Breckinridge IS a sin Oil Company, fif teen miles northwest of Ordway, came to an abrupt end last Saturday, when the drill went through the cretaceous formation in which oil is always found, when there is any, ami penetrated the limestone, it was really too bad, and no one regretted the unsuccessful outcome aud the failure to make an oil strike more thm did Charles McVay, chief driller for the company. A depth of 1,70 b feet was reached In sixty-three days. During the last 600 feet of drilling McVay was confident of making a Strike any minute, as the in dications wore ail that could have Been hoped for or expected. He •ever saw better indications any where, and is at ill confident that oir can and will be found In that terri tory —about twenty miles north am. vast of the experimental well. In Mr. McVay’a estimation, being the BMWt likely location for a strike. There was not a delay, a hitch or an accident during the boring of the well, with one exception. This sin gle exception was a delay of a few days to secure additional rope, as it was found the well would have to he bored to a greater depth than was anticipated. There was no de lay on account of the rope breaking, losing the tools, superabundance of water, or any of the hundred and one things that usually happen in boring a well. In fact, the well is almost a dry hole. At a depth of •90 feet a flow of salt water was encountered which might have yield ed two barrels a day, but the drill ers would not even been aware of this flow had It not been necessary to stop drilling tor a day in order to secure additional rope. When the oil well south of La Junta was bored several years ago a new flow of wa ter was penetrated about every hun dred feet, and getting rid of the war tar was the main difficulty encount ered In boring the well. The total cost of boring the well was about S3OOO, and the stockhold ers will be permitted to stand for an assessment of about SSOO to dean up the outstanding Indebtedness. This Is one of the joys of those who Have aspirations to get In the John D. Rockefeller class. A meeting of the directors of the company, was held In this city last Wednesday morning, and it was decided to call a mealing of the stockholders for the purpose of deciding whether or not to put down another well. The meeting will be held In La Junta next Monday morning at 10 o’clock. —La Junta Tribune.
