With adjourn meat will come a acnae of relief.' Not that fear exil ed over the reault, far from it; discount on aettloment has been UU<- en freely already, but there iln al ways tbe intangible aeaot from tiie fact accomplished which will un loosen capital and give impetus to development. From the stock exchange tiheTe is evidence of the fadth of the nation in the common sense of the Repub lican party, in the upward stride In Industrials and raiLroads, doubling in the par value of the UnJon Padflc and stiff increase in other Western securities, which are giving vitality to the whole country; all proving that tariff reform so-called is more of a political expedient than an eco nomic necessity. Colorado has no reason to com plain over the final result of tariff compromise. The mining industry has been well protected. The nine industry, which is becoming more important every year ln< this state, has benefited, and load has lost nothing, while tungsten, an *‘infant (industry,” has been cared for for the first time. Sugar beet growing has little to f«*ar in tbe admission free of three hundred thousand tons of Phillipine sugar as required by the president: and as for “free hides” the change ■wilL be more apparent on paper than real. Tbe hide has been going with the carcass and the latter is cared for by a gigantic combine wtth head quarters at Chicago. Senator Guggenheim, the sole rep resentative from this state of the paxty responsible for the tariff me os oe. is to be congratulated on his work. Although Senators Warren and Clark of Wyoming failed In securing protection for hides they won a de cisive t ictory in wool protection and in other products of the West and again proved themselves loyal to their own state and to adjoining states. Increases in luxuries have been provided for and it Is worthy of note that the big bulk of the rev enue from these increases will cocnc direct from those best able to afford the added coat. Whies and liquor* imported, according to the statement will pay more than half the total increase In duties and the consumer* of such luxuries are in position to meet the Increased demand; and so with the users of cosmetics and chen leals as toilet luxuries. Broadly speaking the vital move ment made by the Republican party has been hi providing a federal cor poration tax and the submission of an amendment to the constitution for a federal Income tax. Both are departures; in the last campaign both were advocated by the opposi tion party and not by the party that Invoked them and gave them life. They lead In principle to centralisa tion. The Republican party has been going In this direction, following the economical highway. Roosevelt mad a strong advance, although not by exactly a straight path. Behind the present administration la Root, tbe 4 ‘modern Hamilton.” To him will be given credit for much that has taken place In the last few months. Whether tbe Root policy be right or wrong the pity seems to be that the pary of ‘‘state rights” has lost its vitally and is unable to give the nation the other side of the question Bryan lam has brought the party to a woful pass.—Denver Republican. Over In Lamar the Colorado Wo man's Club has established a rest room, which is equipped with toilet accessories, magazines, comfortable rockers. Ice water, fans, etc. Strang en» find it a pleasant place in which to spend an hour or more. Hadn’t La Junta ought to have a rest roam down town some where, where a stranger, or even some of the young men here at home could sit down and read a newspaper or get a drink of ice water? Since the saloons closed the latter commodity is a scarce article and not available in any public place. Even a dog has a hard time to get a drink of water In La Junta these days, unlew he la intelligent enough to make hie wants and wishes known in dog lfngo. When you banish saloons something else beside churches ought to be provided to take their place. The leap across the gulf Is too wide to be made at a single bound.—La Junta Tribune. Following is the yell of the lowa delegation to the national encamp ment of the G. A. R. 4 ‘Rah, raih, rah; corn and hay. We are the boy* from I-O-W-A. First in war, first in piece. First In the hands of the city po lios.” Just Sixteen Hammocks Lett To be Sold at Your Own Price If you want a Hammock come in. We will sell it to you, you make the price. Decision Against Applicants Under Torrens’ Land Law. On Friday afternoon Judge Henry j Hunter of the district court render 'd his decision In the cases under :he law passed some yean ago en- 1 litl«*d “Registration of Land Titles. commonly known as the Torrens •and law. This act was passed pri marily with the Intention of render- ] ing unnecessary, lengthy abstreats or title, but has also been used as c mentis of quieting titles. It was for this latter purpose that these cases were ikistituted la Baca county. The were slxty-one cases Involving 160 quarter sections of land. The applicants or plalntlffe held under tax deeds and applied to have their titles regale red and had theiT applications been allowed, tbe ■iglstratlons would have resulted the ante as a decree quieting titles. Judge Hunter held that the tax deeds were void and that payment <if taxes hod not been made long enough to show “Color of title.’* •He further ruled that even if the title did constitute ‘‘Color of title” they would not be subject to regis tration because live law contemplat es that a tile, that Is to say a legal title, only can be reglsered. Judge Hunter remarked that hie HvmpatMes were with the plaintiffs but he roukl see no way to grant tnei. application and accordingly overruled the report of the referee who had reported favorably and dis missed the application. It Is probable that the cases will be taken to the supreme court. COLORADO’S BIG PAIR will be hekl a* usual at Pueblo on Sept. 20. 21. 22. 23. 24 and 25.
