Com mittees were appointed and a num ber of speeches made in which many good speeches were advanced as to methods of advancing the cause of Improving the roads. A large list of vice-presidents were appointed to promote tne work In various sections of the county. Last eveniug a eecond session o. the association was held at the club rooms and there were a half doze-i Holly citizens present, besides quite a targe number from Lamar. Mr. S. G. Porter of the Amity company made an interesting talk on tne euo iecl of improving the roads, ami ConunbMNoaer Reynolds mid several others also made snort talJts. Mr. Keyuoul* explained Just the c-ondi Lions the comm naiouer* had had to face and how impossible U is for the county to keep up the roads with out the cooperation of the people- He also explained that many of the farmers needed to have these mat lers made plain lo them, as the ex pense of trial and fine If convlcteo would he quite heavy, and the com missioners had been loathe to in filet this penalty If it could be nvokl ed. Dr. Burnett gave his views on the subject of publishing matters per taining to the improvement of the roads so clearly, that the meeting rewarded him by making hhn bead of the committee on publicity srith Mr. Bragg of Holly, Mr. Mayfield of Granada and Mr. Halnline of Wiley as assistants. The meeting adjourn ed to meet In two weeks at Holly. The Register is heartily in favor of good roads and most of the senti ments expressed at the meeting, but we are bound to differ with the Idea advanced by some in regard to securing any more state appropria tions for bridges. We have in the past advocated some of these bills, but think anyone ought to tumble to the game after awhile, and we are free to admit our mistake. It Is easy for a representative to get a few thousand dollars for a cheap john wooden bridge across the river some place, and thus make a show ing of having done something. It then becomes the duty of the coun ty under the law to maintain that bridge and there’s the rub. The |5,- 000 appropriation at Carlton has 'ost Brower* county over th 14,000 at Morse over llti.'Kio and others in like proportion, only the Holly’ bridge of all constru*:tou by the state being still standing. If our next representative will Just protect the county from having any appropriation thrust upon us. and give the road fund a chance to catch up with the work, he will have done a good service to thecause of good roads In Prowers county. The Reg ister believe* that taxpayers, who will Investigate the past experience of the county in this line, will agree with us that unless a sum sufficient to build a solid steel bridge can be obtained, it is better to have noth ing, and as that stun would be $20.- 000 It Is impossible to secure it even if passed It would be cut in the closing hours of the session to $6,000 and that would mean a bum wodden bridge. There will be a civil service ex amination held Jn Lamar on Oct:, ber 2 for the position of alerk and carrier in the postoffice service. The position of substitute carrier is now vacant. Ail Information, application blanks, etc., can be secured by in quiring of Albert A. Hagerman at the poe toffies.
