Garvin claims North field, Vt., as bis birthplace. When be was six years of age bis parents moved to Fond du Lac, Wis., and young Garvin attended the public schools in that place. He began railroad service during tbe summer of 1864 as an operator on the Chicago £ Northwestern, in which capacity be was employed at various points until,in 1669 though but nineteen years of age, he was selected to fill the position of train dispatcher, with headquarters in Clinton, lowa. In 1872 be was ap pointed chief dispatcher of tbe Northwestern line, and tbe summer of 1880 found him at Pueblo. Colo . as chief train dispatcher and train, master for tbe Denver and Rio Grande. Mr. Garvin became a Santa F* man in September, 1881, when he accepted a position as chief train dispatcher In Ban Martial, N. M.. being transferred to La Junta.
