A selection of pupils’ work is being made and a first class school exhibit is assured in spite of the brief notice given. The fair management is offering three sets of premiums this year, one set for schools in third class districts, an other set for schools in second class districts, and a third set for schools in first class districts. County super intendent Mary Z. Lake is superinten dent of school exhibits and it is ex pected that there will be a good dis play of school work from the schools throughout the county. City Schools Will Close The city schools will close Tuesday afternoon and on Wednesday after noon of fair week in order that the students and teachers may attend the fair. Have You Subscribed? The high school athletic association must have money to buy a new foot ball outfit, including suits, balls, head gear, etc. The association estimates the probable cost of the football sea son at S4OO. This is a chance for ev ery football enthusiast to get back of the association in away that will count. The boys have made their es timate lower than the usual annual expenditure for football and need the entire amount stated at once. Ray mond McMillin, chairman of the as sociation will be glad to take your, pledge. School Reception Best Yet I The reception given by the Board , of Education and former Lamar teach * ers to the new teachers was well at . tended, a splendid program was given j and the purpose of the meeting was well carried out. There are twenty four ex-Lamar school teachers living in Lamar at this time and they showed a very commendable interest in the success of the reception. Mr. Herachel Horn, secretary of the Board of Edu cation, introduced Mayor Cook, who . welcomed the new teachers on behalf of the city. Mr. Cook spoke of the ethical value of the schools and add ed some interesting data as to their commercial value to the community. He stated that the Lamar schools had been more effective than any other one instrumentality in bringing to Lamar the best class of citizens from adjac ent communities. He welcomed the teachers on behalf of the town, and wished them a successful and pleas ant year in Lamar, assuring them the hearty co-operation of the city in all their work. Mrs. D. C. Polhemus welcomed the teachers on behalf of the women's clubs of Lamar. The women’s organ izations are interested in the work of the schools and are glad to co-operate. Mr. T. J. Sayler welcomed the teach ers on behalf of the Lamar Commer cial club. Although handicapped by a lack of time, Mr. Sayler, in a charac teristic address, handed over the keys j to the good will of the commercial in terests of Lamar, and in a happy way gave the backing of the commercial I club for a successful and pleasant year. Mr. S. D. Church, for the board of j education, welcomed the teachers to j their new work and to their new home in Lamar, assured them of the interest of the board in their success in the schools and urged upon them an , interest in the community life as well ias in the work of the school. Excellent music was rendered dur ing the program by Mr. Roy Holbert, Mr. Jess Rose, Misses Manbeck and Bent, Miss Everett and by the city orchestra. Refreshments were served |by the wives of the members of the board and by representatives of the | former teachers of Lamar. The re ception helped teachers and patrons |to get acquainted, and made a very pleasant beginning for the new teach ers. The cordial relations begun in this initial meeting cannot help being beneficial to the schools. Judge Goodale Remembers Schools A communication from Mr. Goodale praises the work of the schools in the Hawaiian islands where he is visiting at this time. He finds the schools there well furnished and progressive as in the states. Experiment in Primary Grades The enrollment in the primary grades has become unusually heavy, but scarcely large enough as yet to require additional teachers. It is be lieved that with the primary classes practically as good work can be done in a three hour session with one-half the pupils as with a four and a quar ter hour session with all pupils pres ent. The present crowded condition presented a good opportunity to tty this out, hence half day sessions .vere established in the first grade in Lin coln and Central schools this week. In the Lincoln school the beginners at tend in the morning and the advanced pupils in the afternoon. In the Cen tral school halt the pupils of each class attend in the forenoon, the other half in the afternoon. It is believed that pupils will make better progress under this plun than to attend all day in a crowded room. If it seems best to add teachers the board will lose no time in doing so.
