The MulJoon appears to have all the fighting on hand at the present time with Ouray that it cares about, suul has no desire to face Colorow. There wperaa to be as many generals, colonels and majors in the State that are ready to fight the UUs as there are red-skins, and a private individual stands no show to use his winchester. From the fuss that is being made over the Utcs by the Denver papers people in the east would be lead to be lieve they could walk through Colora do, and that they numbered up in the tlitms&iidj. /Tiie Ilagerman tunnel on the Colb /rado Midland railroad is 2160 feet i J mg and at an elevation of 11380 feet' : hove sen level, and passes under the .apex of the Continental divide at a depth of 600 feet from the surface. Maurice Atkins, vice-president of the Rocky Mountain News, died at 1 /.is Angeles, Cal, last Monday night, v. here he was visiting in hopes his fail ing health would he restored. The sympathies of the Current are exten ded the family in their uflliction. The Gunnison Fair Association will hold their second annual fair on their grounds September 21, 22, 23 and 24. A grand display is expected and a good programe of games and races pre pare 1. Handsome posters have been sent to different sections of the county and one is to he seen at the post-office. Ir a mining claim is worth working it. should be done well no matter if on ly assessment work is done upon the property each year, and s it. would be much better to concentrate the work •n a tunnel or shaft upgu the vein at a promising point, rather than scratch along the surface of the vein each year. Tiie citizens in this section do not room to take much stock in the Ute v,ar and are attending to their business although there is not a single man who i.A not ready to shoulder iiis rifle should necessity demand it, and we b lieve t iey could e >ma nearer extermina ting old Colorow’s band than some of the State militia sent from the valley XJWIIS. , It is understood the contractors who done the work on the Midland railroad iiinucl with air drills will drive the proposed new working tunnel on the Avivanite mine, and it is expected they will knock out ten to twelve feet of rook every twenty-fbur hours. The tunnel will be upwards of 1500 feet and when completed will be of great benefit to the mine. It will biing the surface workings out of nil danger of fno w slides and the ore viil be above them. The opportunity for investment in ttie resources of the surrounding dis trict has commenced to attract public attention; and we believe there arc a few enterprises under way that will materially help the development of the mini try. That this section should he ::n attractive point with the advance ment of the railroads in this direction i without doubt., and we may expect t > see an advancement in figures upon mining and other properties. The new rtrikes which are being made around us gives evidence of the value of our resources. In its last issue the Gunnison News Democrat printed the semi-annual statement, oj Gunnison county for the si;f months < tiding June 30th, 1887 This statenie.it makes a better showing than any ala emen' over puldislvd by o».r counfv. On Jaiiiixry 1.1*87 the total amount of legal warrants of the county outstanding, including the court-house bonds, was $20,457, and this amount Ims been reduced to $22,- 842. on the same date there were also outstanding $16,094 in assignments of revenue, which amount on June 30, 1887, had been reduced to $8,510; thru tiie statement shows a reduction in the county debt |of over SII,OOO in six months, and this under a Democratic administration. This statement is the best evidence that the affairs of the county have been managed in an eco nomical manner, and the county officers may well feel proud of their work dur ing the past six months. The Toinichi Valley Smelter at Gunnison, lms both its furnaces in full blast and turning out a large amount of bullion each day, which speaks vol umes for the management. They have spared no pains to make the enterprise a success, and are securing ore from al! points and competing with the large smelters at Pueblo and Denver. The inking companies and miners in the Elk mountains should bear this in mind and encourage the enterprise, if they have ore wc do not see why they cannot commence making s-hip meuts at once as well as waiting for another season. From the mineral showing in the country there should be much more ore produced than there is, and we fear our eastern mining com panies are rather tardy in developing their properties, which should not be the case when they have the opportu nity of marketing their ore within the county. The cost of transporting ore from ihc mines to the smelter from most points will not exceed 815 per ton which should start up our mines that are owned by companies. Prospectors Developing the State. \ No sooner does the cold air give way to the warm breath of spring, when snows fade away into mountain streams, than the prospector shoulders his tools * ol discovery. The mountain towns, . locked up for months by iccv enclosures, hail him with delight. Persistently he goes to work, and strike after strike is made to add to the State’s famous treasures. Difficulties do not discour age him; the exhilerating mountain breezes, deep slumber by his camp fire, a good shot at a lion or antelope, crowned by the finding now and then of a vein of precious mineral make his journey to wealth most agreeable. The season of 1887 will prove ex ceptional in the number of small strikes. Nothing of a character is re corded which made Leadville famous. But the labor expended by a host of enthusiastic prospectors is resulting in the formation of new mining compa nies and a further outlay of eastern capital for Colorado labor and Colora do machinery. With those who are ignorant of the formation of rocks uiul the character of a vein, mining is a lottery and a doubt. Untold wealth is in store for him who has his geology by heart, and \ who will only trust to himself in the investigation and purchase of a mining property. The prospectors are hard at work, aid their neighbors at home trust they v ill meet with still richer finds as they o imb along the Rockies.—[Denver Fouvnal of Commerce. Messrs. Dowling, Fitzjerald and Burk caine over from Crested Butte to look over the new strikes being made on our lime contact. They were much pleased with the looks of the same, and believe the boys have a good thing, and, from what they could see, think this vein carries more mineral than any vein in the country. The Editors Prayer.
