The Daily Pioneer PUBLISHED EVERY AFTKRNOON. PIONEE PUBLISHING 0. By R. W HITCHCOCK. Entered In the postofflce at Bemidjl, Minn as second class matter. Official County and City Paper SUBSCRIPTION $ 5 PER YEAR LAND OFFICE FRAUDS. An article published in the Pioneer some two weeks ago relative to the high handed way in which the department of the interior treated many who have filed on timber and stone claims in Washington and Oregon has aroused considerable interest and has resulted in the making of some attempts to induce the department to modify its hard and fast rule that all claims shall be thrown out where minor tech- nical rules of the department have not been observed. ThV'department has put scores of innocent citizens to heavy ex- pense and to mu ch trouble with- out cause. I has induced them to travel from Minnesota and neighboring states to prove up on claims only to be informed that their labor avails them noth- ing. Of course this is not just, but red tape and not justice is what the department appears to be aiming at. Senator Clapp has introduced a bill providing that evidence may be filed in the proper dis- trict although it was taken in the wrong district. This bill, did it become a lawj would cure the wrong suffered by many people of this section, but its passage is not very probable owing to the opposition to measures which will result in making titles to public lands easier to acquire. THE Beltrami County News in this week's issue timidly ven- tures out upon the unaccustomed waters of truth and remarks that the circulation of the Pioneer is limited. It's a fact. The Pio- neer's circulation is limited by the population of this section of northern Minnesota. Th circu- lation of the News, however, is not limited it has far to go before it gets in sight of the limit. BITS FROM THE "P"^ NORTH* COUNTR 1^^ .^fcdfc Wkt ^fcj Try not to be a comic valentine.
