iorth their wares and the effort
which they are constantly mak
ing to bring to the notice of the
public the new goods upon their
shelves and the numerous bar
gains which they have to offer
speaks loudly of the advantages
which buyers of the city and ad
jacent country enjoy.

Order Rooms Closed.
As the result of the tour of in
spection which the board of
health took yesterday five inside
rooms without windows or ven
tilation were ordered closed at
one hotel on Minnesota avenue
and three at another. The board
found things, comparatively
speaking, in good shape at most
of the places. This afternoon it
is touring other sections in the
down town district.
Should Remember George.
Bemidji friends of George
Markham, who is entered in the
Minneapolis Journal's popularity
contest, should not forget him.
when renewing their subscrip
tions to the Journal. Mr. Mark
ham is in the race with fifty votes
at present. The candidate hav
ing the highest number of votes
comes from Crookston and so far
has 480 votes. SHOTGUN" OLSON.
Everyone calledhim "Shotgun"
Olson. Not because he was con
sidered dangerous. Not at all.
-Hiegentleness of a dovefilledhis
eye and the mildness of a lamb
covered his mouth. And the
flow of broken English that came
haltingly when he talked was
like the murmur of a meadow
stream that swelled over a mossy
log.
But he always carried a shot
gun wherever he went. On the
streets or in the woods the gun
was always slung over his
shoulder. It seemed a part of
him. He was only dissuaded
from carrying it with him* to
church by a custom of never go
ing to church.
"Shotgun" Olson was said to
be a miser,but no one ever hinted
at a disposition to match his
nickname.
One dark night he was met
outside of Slabtown by a man
with a drawn revolver. Olson
fired one barrel of his gun as an
answer to the demand for his
money. Another man seized him
from behind and^ snatched the
gun away. They searched him
in vain.
"See here, old man. We
know you are taking a thousand
dollars to pay off the boys at the
camp. Where have you got it
hid?"
'Ay don't ar no moneys.''
"You lie. Tell us quick or I'll
give you a shot with your own
gun."
"Yag har no ting. Leat miri
go."
An awful, explosion followed.
Olson found himself in the road
with the mangled form of the
robber writhing among the
weeds. He picked up the bent
barrel of the ruined gun and
went on to the camp.
There he extracted several
rolls of bank bills that were
wadded into the gun barrel, and
the next day he deposited $800 in
the Slabtown bank.
He had lost confidence in his
own portable bank.
Embracing New Territory.
The Crookston Lumber com
pany is broadening out its .field
and the members are making ar
rangements to cover the terri
tory surrounding Pipestone.
B. F. Harris has been given
that ground and left last even
ing to begin work. If it seems ad
visable he will be stationed there
permanently with Sioux City as
his headquarters. John Lennox
is taking his place as billing
clerk at Bemidji.
