The general land office of the "United States has made a decided mistake according to the general belief of the people in this sec tion of the country, in making the conditions of homesteading harder than ever before. The ruling which compels the inves tigation of each final entry made ontside of the district land office by the special agent, will work hardship to many settlers. The result will be that the special agent will be unable to take care -of his work and it will get two or three years behind. The settler will become discouraged with this condition of affairs and be compelled to go to the district land office. In this district, for instance, this will work a great hardship. If a settler at War road .wishes to make.final prool it will cost him $100 for car fare and hotel expense for himself and witnesses. If we are not mistaken not the people of the northwest will raise such a pro test that it will be heard even in Washington.Crookston Times. THE DESERTED CLAIM SHANTY. Deserted, neglected, a hope less wreck, the old cabin stands. Ohostly it stands, an unburied corpse, an untuned instrument, a withered witness of the fron tier's wasted days. The win dows glare with sightless eyes, and the doorway yawns with toothless mouth. Winter, wi'tli its shroud of snow upon the skeleton trees and the evergreens, is more in harmony with the old "shack" than any other season. When spring brings the wild geese on their northward wing, the old hut knows the tall, lean willows soon will grow green with life again, the wild cucum ber vine will blossom gay once more, and the saucy cowslip will parade to shame the staid solemnity of the cabin they sur round. The shrubs in flirting with the wind and the bees in courting the flowers of the summer time will rob it of its dignified serious ness. They are too young, too thoughtless to sooth its shat tered soul. It better likes the silent night which throws the willow shadows long across the sobbing brook, and calls the owl to hoot its solemn prophesy. Autumn turns the tamarack to yellow hues and makes the maple towQr high in burnished gold. The monotone sung by the wind among the gloomy pine does voice the lingering sadness of the house, revives its cracking memories. Winter, with its snow that calms the air and the woods that hush the winds, signifies rest and peace. And this is the mood of the desolated old claim cabin. COUNCIL MEETING. Feb. 8, 1904.
