Northern Minnesota is com- paratively little known as yet Half of what is known about it is not so and is known only to our harm, it behooves the people of this section of the state and especially the newspapers tostand shoulder to shoulder in an effort to advertise the peculiar re- sources and advantages of north central Minnesota. There has been too much flick- ering between the towns of northern Minnesota, Each has been too anxious to obtain the initial advantage and each has been too ready to malign the other in the hopes of advantage to itself, The result is that from our own testimony many unfavor- able opinions, haye been formed of us by the outside world. There is plenty of room in northern Minnesota for every body now here and for a great many more. If we gee together in the effort to let the rest of the world know the truth about us we shall have no trouble in get ting the "many more." Discretion. The Pioneer is rebuked bo- cause it stated that the state auditor is compelled to use his discretion in settling timber trespass cases, and the following excerpt from the state laws is quoted: "Provided that ho shall not make any such settlement for an amount less than double the value of such timber as shown by such scale and appraisal "-Chap- ter 1G3, Laws of 1895, Section '68'. Who fixes the "value of such timber?" The state auditor ha to fix it and the only way he can fix it is to estimate it from the scale and appraisal. That's the way it has been done, the way it is done now and the way it al- ways will be done. The charge against Mr. Dunn may be urged-with equal force against Mr.- Iverson and against all other gentlemen who have held the office of state auditor. A TWIN CITY, daily says tha Dunn is conducting a school for scandal campaign. We shall have to admit it. Judge Collins founded the school for his own polical purposes but Dunn seems to have broken in and taken charge1 while Judge Collins is playing the part of the whipped pupil with about as much grace as such cases usually show forth. S MUCH of an American was Henry M. Stanley that many have supposed that he was born in this country. was an American in all but the accident of birth and America accords him today no less honor than does his native land. The world is much better because he lived. N ow they say that Russian wheat.is ousting ours. This is certainly one Russian victory which will excite small sympathy in America. I THIS keeps up we shall wish that a gubernatorial election came but once a century. SOMEH OW -lapan always turns defeat into victory in the next issue. Now watch how Joseph 15. Gre at growth of commercial clubs. Hero's hoping they will head out well. There may be a chance to warm over those glory hallelujah editorials on the recognition of Bena as a townsito. to date the north country has produced only a half dozen or so of candidates for railway and warehouse commissioner. But it's a good while yet to June 30th, The Red river valley claims that the Canadian land boom has fallen flat and to help things most of the valley is industri ously jumping on it. I Tips of the Tongue John Vogler: "Have just had a letter from C. H. Miles. Every thing is going along nicely at St Louis aha "Hr. Miles expects to come home for a short visit some time next week." F. Hannifin: "Have just re turned from a trip to Duluth and want to say that we shall leave nothing undone to make the ser vice at the Markham the best there is in this country. I am going to make a number of im provements at once." A Pastor: I am sorry to see you advertising Sunday base ball in your paper. I see the mana ger of the Duluth team has been arrested for playing base ball on Sunday. I admire and am fond of the game myself, but think the Sabbath is one day on which it should not be tolerated." Dr. Morrison: I think our central Miss Spencer is one of the best and most obliging we have overbad. She is always courte ous, will hold the line for you and if you happen to forget the number she doesn't snap you up. All these little things are a great convenience to telephone pa trons.!! _. A Democrat: "The other day in your article about the Demo crats in Beltrami county being for Hearst you forgot to mention some of the best Democrats we have here There's Colonel Tay lor, dyed in the wool, never slips warranted not to rip, ravel or run down at the heel and Judge Pen dergast too, not to mention Judge Skinvik and a host of others." Cured His Mother of Rheumatism "My mother has been a sufferer for many years with rheu matis m,'' says W. H. Howard, of Husband, Pa. A times she was unable to move at all, while at all times walkingwas painful. I presented her with a bottle of Chamberlain's Pain Balm and after a few ap plications she decided it was the most wonderful pain reliever she had ever tried, in fact, she is nev er without it now and is at all times able to walk.
