Brinkman returned last night from Michigan City, Ind., where he was called by a message announcing the critical illness of his aged father, who is now slightly improved. Ole G. Olson is in the city to d^y from Ripple. Mr. Olson was one of the earliest pioneers of Bemidji and conducted the first livery and feed stable in the city. He has been sufferiug with an illness for several months past and comes to Bemidji for medical treatment. Barker's Drusr store Band Meeting Tonight. A meeting for the purpose of organizing the Bemidji band will beheld this evening at the city hall commencing at 8 o'clock. Those who wish to become mem bers of the band are requested to be present, as the matter of organizing the band will proba bly be disposed of. Gardens Robbed Comp'aints have been received from tne northwestern portion of the city to the effect that un known persons are making a practice of stealing vegetables from gardens kept by residents of that vicinity. The garden be longing to S. L. Meak, an aged man who sustains his family with the products of his garden, has recently been inyaded and nearly everything in the garden was taken away. HORSES MA BE 553^' GLANDERED Symptoms of Disease Have Made Their Appearance on Beltrami County Animals. It is claimed that two cases of glanders exist at Funkley on horses that are owned by M. H. Fisher of that village. One of the animals has been sick for some time past and the symptoms shown indicate that there is but little doubt that the horse is afflicted with the disease. The other animal was taken sick a short time ago and it is believed that he also is afflicted. The state sanitary board has been comtnutj icatcd with and H. M. Bracken, secretary of the state boat ot health, has directed that the animals be dispatched if it is found that they are "afflicted with glanders. BLACKDUCK PREPARING Large Crowd Expected at Firemen's Tournament to Be Held Next Week. Every arrangement is being made by the citizens of Black duck to entertain the largest crowd in the history cf the city at the firemen's tournament that commences on June 21. A meet ing of the commercial club of Blackduck was held last night at which the matter was fully dis cussed and the final arrange ments for the tournament weie made. The business men of the city have already subscribed more than $1,500to be paid out as prizes to the competing teams, and it is expected that the tourna ment will be highly successful. The Bemidji running team will attend the tournament, and a large number of people from this city will accompany the team to Blackduck to take in the tourna ment. Mrs. Van Epps returned to her home at Minneapolis this morning after having enjoyed a visit in Bemidji at the home of her brother, A E Smith. Lieut. Wilson of the Salvation Army has returned from Min neapolis, where he took a young woman and placed her in charge of the state humane authorities. The girl was taken out of a house of ill fame in Bemidji. Mr. and Mrs. H. W, Bailey left this morning for Jamestown, N. D., for a visit that city with friends and relatives. Mr. Bai ley will return home in about 10 days while Mrs. BaUey will re main in Jamestown for a month. Rev. E M. Peterson left this morning for Minneapolis, where he will attend the Lutheran state conyention which will begin in that city tomorrow. Rev. Peter son was accompanied by Rev. Redal of Bagley, who will also attend the convention. Fred Sprague, one of the mem bers of the police force, is taking a short yacation from his duties and has left for Enderlin, N. where he will visit friends and relatives for two weeks. F. L. Bursley is taking Mr. Sprague's place on the force. Mrs. Frank West arrived the city last night from Alexan dria for a visit with friends in Bemidji Mrs. West was form erly Miss G*ldi Sabin and up to the time of her marriage nearly two years ago made her home in this city. Mrs. L. Berman has almost entirely recovered from the effects of a bruise sustained about a week ago which has kept her confined at her home on Min nesota avenue up to today. Mrs. Berman was walking home on evening when she slipped and fell to the sidewalk, an ugly bruise being inflicted on her forehead. WOMEN PARADE IN MEN'S CLOTHES Two Young Ladies of Funk. ley Array Themselves in ei&?,, Men's Garments. ^1iL *5-5B# Justice of According to Justic of the Peace Henry Plummer of Funk ley, two young Jadies of that vil lage recently had a narrow es cape from arrest on a charge of having violated the state law that provides that women shall masquerade in men's clothes Mr. Plummer states that a few days ago two young ladies ap peared on the streets of the vil lage dressed in garments belong ing to the sterner sex and that they were apprehended by the village marshal!, who attempted to cause their arrest but failed, the two women disappearing be fore he had a chance to take them in charge. WOMAN SHOOTS -AT HUSBAND Domestic Row at Funkley Ends in Shooting Fray Nobody Hurt. Funkley was the scene of a shooting fray Sunday night when Mrs. Richard Taylor discharged a revolver at her husband at the conclusion of a row in which they had been engaged. The shot went wild and the bullet failed to penetrate any portion of Taylor's person. The'parties to the affair have had a peck of trouble between themselves as a result of their matrimonial ven ture and it is claimed that the woman left Funkley last fall in company with another man, who died in the west last winter.
